Historian Eric Foner wrote, Freedom is not a fixed, timeless category with a single, unchanging definition. Indeed, the history of the United States is, in part, a story of debates, disagreements, and struggles over freedom. How does Pauli Murray’s memoir Proud Shoes illuminate or complicate your conception of American freedom?
Preparing your essay:
As you prepare to write your essay, first ask yourself: What does American freedom mean to me? How does Pauli Murray’s story illuminate or complicate my own definition and personal experience of freedom? You may choose, for example, to write about the social, economic, or personal aspects of freedom. You may choose to focus on the conditions that make freedom possible or on the boundaries of American freedom (who is entitled to enjoy freedom and who is not?). With a specific aspect of freedom in mind, construct an essay that focuses on an episode, theme, or character from the book. Note that you are NOT asked to write a book report (a simple recounting/summary of the plot line of Proud Shoes). If you submit a book report, you will receive a failing grade. Instead, draw on the book to provide rich examples and supporting evidence for your exposition on American freedom.
Other important details:
You are welcome (even encouraged) to write this essay in the first person (I/me). However, you are writing an academic paper. Your essay must contain a clear thesis statement (a main argument), as well as specific evidence and examples drawn from Proud Shoes. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade. No outside sources.
Use parenthetical (in-text) citations to document all ideas that are not your own. For example, when you draw on information from Proud Shoes or your textbook or paraphrase or quote these sources, not the author’s last name and page number in your paper like this: (Foner, 226), (Murray, 12). For this paper, you do not need to list the author’s full name or the title of the book in your citations.
Your paper should be 3 full pages in length, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, and 1-inch margins. This essay comprises 15% of your final grade. Failure to submit will affect your final grade. Your essay should be submitted to Blackboard before 5 pm on Thursday, March 21.

Evaluating Sources-Annotating Your Sources-Writing Plan
This assignment has 3 parts. Please read all instructions carefully.
Part 1 Evaluating Sources
You will need to find three sources.
After you find a credible source that can be used for your persuasive essay, you will fill out the attached document called (TheCRAAPWSrevised.doc. Then, explain how the source fared with the C.R.A.A.P test by answering the following questions in one fully developed paragraph:
What were the total points the source earned on the test?
Where did it earn the most amount of points? How did it earn these points?
Where did it earn the least amount of points? Why did it lose points here?
Ultimately, how will this source help support the main argument (or counterargument) of your essay?
Part 2 Annotating Your Sources
You’ll create a bibliography entry by following the steps and answering the questions as thoroughly as possible. The questions will prompt you to engage in a conversation with your sources. You will need to complete this activity three times (for your three different sources). see attached document called Annotating Your Sources.doc
Part 3 Writing Plan
In this part you will use the document attached called writing notes. Revisit the Writing Notes and revise the responses to produce a complete, polished document that addresses all of the below elements. By reconsidering the responses from the Writing Notes, you will construct a Writing Plan. This process will allow you to develop a potential structure for effectively persuading readers to agree with your argument. This plan will be helpful in keeping your thought process on track when you begin writing and revising your essay. Answer the questions that is attached on the document called Constructing Your Writing Plan, each response should be one fully developed paragraph in length (5-8 sentences).

The paper is to be typed, using Times New Roman font, font size 12, and double spaced. Staple your paper. DO NOT SUBMIT THIS PAPER ELECTRONICALLY.
Start with a title page that has the title, your name, Biology 102, and the semester.
The second page should be the abstract. The abstract is an approximately half page summary of your paper.
The main body of your paper should start on the third page.
Identify each species mentioned in your paper by its scientific name (e.g. Quercus virginiana) and, if it has one, its common English name (e.g. Southern Live Oak) at least once each in your paper. Be sure to write these properly. You may use either the scientific or English common name at your discretion elsewhere.
Length of your paper must be 1200 words minimum. This total does NOT include the title page and reference page, but DOES include your Abstract. Do not copy and paste sentences into your text.
You may use direct quotation from a source only ONCE; the quotation may not exceed three sentences in length.
Figures
Insert at least one picture (color is nice, black and white is acceptable) of your species in your report. Pictures are easily found on the Internet.
Insert a range or distribution map(s).
Pictures and maps must be labeled consecutively as Figures and have captions. They must be cited in the paragraphs of your text. See the following pages for an example.
References
Your References Cited will be in Scientific Style (see examples below). DO NOT use MLA, APA, or any other reference style. Failure to list your references in scientific style will result in points deducted.
You must use at least four independent references. Internet references are acceptable (Wikipedia, IUCN Red Book entries, the Nature Conservancy, United States Geological Survey-Non-indigenous Aquatic Species, etc.). I would like ONE of the four references to be from a scientific journal paper. Assertions of fact in your text must be referenced. Note: scientific papers come from scientific journals; I will discuss in class how to find and recognize them. An excellent resource for finding scientific journals is to use Google Scholar as a search engine.
A paper, book, or website with one author is cited by last name and year. If there are two authors cite both names, if there are three or more, use the first author and et al. (from et al., and the others). Examples:
Hoffman (2011) predicted the distribution of the least weasel throughout the Great Plains.
Currently there are several species of carnivores that expanding their range through Nebraska (Hoffman and Genoways 2006).
Predictors of establishment success and spread of invasive species in Florida appear to idiosyncratic for a given taxa (Allen et al. 2013).
A separate, alphabetical References Cited must be appended to the end of the report. See examples below.
Specific Guidelines
The body of your paper must include the following five sections make sure to include the section headings (ie. Description, Distribution, etc.):
Description – In this section provide an introduction to the species and describe the natural history of the species. Information should include physical appearance, diet, reproduction, habitat, predators/parasites, behavior, home range, population dynamics, etc
Distribution – in this section you need to give a through description of the species current distribution and discuss if the distribution has changed from its historical distribution (ultimately if a species in endangered then its logical to assume that it currently doesn’t occur everywhere that it used to). You should also reference your distribution map in this section.
Conservation status – In this section you will need to list what the IUCN status of your species is. Also, you will need to provide an in depth discussion of the history and reason for its decline (don’t just list the reasons, provide some explanation). For instance, if one of the reasons for decline is habitat destruction, tell why and where the habitat is being destroyed? Finally you will need to provide a current estimate of the species population size.
Protection – In this section you will need to discuss what is being done to protect the species and/or help it recover. What are local governments/wildlife agencies/activist groups/zoos doing? What kind of laws protect the species, if any?
Conclusion -What characteristics of this species made it likely to do poorly in a human-dominated world? What is your gut feeling or best guess as to what the future has in store for this species.

A rhetorical analysis to be precise is typically a four-sentence paragraph distilling the main ideas in the text assigned and a contextualized statement of their importance. You can use this format if you feel more comfortable following a template that ensures inclusion of key elements of the argument. This format is not required, however. If you prefer to freely chose your own framework to critically assess the work, feel free to do so. A rhetorical analysis o precis includes the following elements:
a) A single coherent sentence identifying:
-name of the author, title of the work, and date (in parenthesis) (you can also choose to add a description of the author something like professor of At, Pulitzer prize winning journalist etc.);
-a rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “deny,” “refute,” “prove,” disprove,” “explain,” reveal challenge suggests etc.)this is important because authors usually don’t simply say things. Identifying what their rhetorical intentions are in crafting their arguments is critical in understanding the reading.
-a that clause containing the major claim (thesis statement) of the work.
b) A single coherent sentence that explains how the author develops and supports the major claim (thesis statement). (Does the author offer scientific evidence, or does she analyze underexamined aspects of a work or idea? What method, in short, does he/she use to make his/her point?)
c) A single coherent sentence stating the author’s likely purpose, followed by an “in order to” phrase.
d) A single coherent sentence describing the intended audience and/or the relationship the author establishes with the audience.
and then you can add your own comments to this!!

The creation of a positive sporting environment for junior athletes.
1. The aim is to justify two topics that support the creation of a positive sporting environment for junior athletes. This will help to create two resources(infographics) for parent audience (not needed to create as already done). The first resource is based on Parent’s Optimum Zone Theory, the second is based on parent-initiated motivational Climate.
the aim is to justify the choice of content and offer links to the literature to support the rationale. How these can help create a positive sporting environment for junior athletes and why? Theories.
(Have already done half of this part, but needs to be improved)
2. Individually, you must present a 500 word rationale for the resources that offers a sound justification for your choice of content throughout the resources with clear links to the literature. You also need to talk about why parents are crucial in exposing their kids to sport and be able transport them so they have the opportunity to play more etc.
