Discuss 2-3 relationships in Augustine’s life as described in the Confessions, and argue whether Augustine believes these relationships led him towards God, away from God, or a bit of both. Relationships to consider include his parents (especially Monica), his friends, and religious leaders (such as Faustus or Ambrose). Augustine’s sense of self is his relation to God, both in his recognition of God’s love and his response to it—achieved through self-presentation, then self-realization. Augustine believed one could not achieve inner peace without finding God’s love. A striking thing about Augustine’s Confessions is how relevant it is to many aspects of modern or contemporary thought, and the view of the self is one of these.

Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material – Translation from Hebrew or Greek to English
If I had a friend who was questioning why the Pastor always translated a meaning of a word from English to what it means in the original Hebrew or Greek, I would first be understanding because I used to not understand why either. I would have the thought of something like,” whats the point of him saying that, it really does not change the way I see the verse.” Then I would go on to explain why. First, I would begin to explain that in order for us to truly understand the passage we must dive deeper than the surface level of the passage. If we take a scripture from a magnet on our fridge we can easily misuse and misunderstand the scripture, but if we take the scripture from our fridge and open our bibles and study not only the verse but the context around we will be able to understand what the passage truly means on a deeper more intimate level. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material A good start would be to understand who wrote the book, then determine who the audience is. From there start at the beginning of the chapter or even the beginning of the book and break it up piece by piece. Then continue to find out what the historical context is. What world did they live in while this story was being taken place? If you do not understand a word use an expository dictionary of some sort or even look at different translations of the bible to better understand the material. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material Then look at the Greek and Hebrew meaning of the word; the origin of the language it was written in can bring you back to understanding the historical context and a deeper meaning to the word. Also consulting an expert in the language can really help. If you really what to know what the passage means and not just a surface level saying that barley gets you by, these are the ways you can build a more intimate relationship with Christ and His word. That is why our Pastor shares the knowledge he has with the original language to help us better understand the word even though we may not realize it just yet. All this may seem like a lot of work but once you start building that intimacy with the word, Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material you will realize the importance and worth it has and will not settle for anything less.

Amber Curry Option 2
I chose option 2 for my forum. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material We are going to say that the friend’s name is Judy and my forum will be as if I am directly speaking to Judy.
Judy, my dear friend, what you do not realize is that Pastor Edgewater is actually helping you understand the passage better! Unless you frequently study the Word, correctly, you are only seeing the surface of the meaning of the passages. Here, let me explain. Consider for a minute, how the meanings of words change over time. Since words do change, there are some words that disappear from common vocabulary or based on your location, so it is important to study them and necessary to properly study them to understand their meaning. Word study is important because it will help you develop a better understanding of the passage. Let me share with you 5 steps to Word study. Number 1 is to select your words out of the context that you would like to study. Number 2 is to identify all the places the word is located throughout the Scriptures. Number 3 is to determine what the word could mean. Number 4 is to determine that the word does mean. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material Lastly, in Step 5, check your work. So, in conclusion, even though you might be pretty sure you understand a passage, remember that words have changed through the years, and even though you may think that you know the meaning but your definition may be different than the original meaning. Here are some verses as well that I feel may apply to our topic.
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser, teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Proverbs 9:9-10
“Hear, o sons, a father’s instruction and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.” Proverbs 4:1-2

Derek Payne The little guy?
For part A. of the discussion I chose a historical event from the Wycliffe Bible Translators from the article by William Cameron Townsend.
William Cameron Townsend
The reason I chose this article as what I think made the greatest impact on missions today, is because I believe that it is what we do for the lost that counts. In their case they took the Bible to the tribes that did not have it, despite what people were saying, that they were not worth the time. Derek Payne The Little Guy Historical Event. It says all throughout the Bible that Jesus came for the sick and the lost, and even shows us multiple times that he went for the harletts or the tax collector like in Luke 5:27 when Jesus went to Levi the tax collector and told him to “Follow Me.” and he did, the ones who were “not worth saving” to other people but not to Jesus. Derek Payne The Little Guy Historical Event
Derek Payne The Little Guy Historical Event – Showing the Truth of the Lord
I chose this event because I believe everyone is worth the time to attempt to be saved, or to show the truth of the Lord to. Despite the odds they took the Bible, translated it, and got it to those who did not have it. Then in today’s world there are still people out there doing that very thing.
For Part B, I chose the African Sending, I chose this particular one because it seems like the one the has the biggest impact on the world today. Having churches all over the area in that part of the hemisphere.

When it comes to what historical event or movement outside of biblical times that had the greatest impact on missions today I would have to go with the Protestant Missions led by William Carey. Derek Payne The Little Guy Historical Event You cannot read a single book on missions that can be declared complete without the mention of the name William Carey. Even though others had engaged in missions prior to the Protestant Mission. One of the reasons I feel the Protestant Missions had the greatest impact on missions today is because William Carey led the way out of Europe to the coast-lands of the world and promoted a broad Kingdom of God. Another reason it had the greatest impact is because following Carey’s example, in the next 32 years 12 similar societies formed and the next 300 years would become known as “The Great century”. I believe William Carey did great things in service to the Lord, while at the same time while bringing Christ to the world around us he was not just leading people to salvation, but he was making the world a better place as well. I feel this way because while Carey’s main goal was to evangelize to lost souls as he improved India with his presence by showing them God’s presence.
I feel that one of the majority world sending movements that was significance in global engagement was the Indian movement.
Derek Payne The Little Guy Historical Event Indian Movement
The reason the Indian movement was significant in global engagement was because during this time many missions from many churches, denominations, theologies and traditions came together to unite on there common understanding of the commission to form India missions’ association which is now the largest mission association in the world with approximately 50,000 Indian workers and 220 organizations making them the leaders for global awareness. Indian missions focus on “proclaiming the gospel among remote tribal groups, the down-trodden and the poor”. The previous focus continues to follow William Carey’s goal of evangelize to lost souls as he improved India with his presence by showing them God’s presence even today.
Therefore, this exercise has been created to teach you how to quickly define and defend your stance.
