This assignment builds on the seminar activities you have undertaken in the first two weeks of the module and provides some contextual background for the simulation game by looking at emerging trends in the ‘real world’ sneaker market.

1. Access the Statista (2019) website:

Gather data on the Athletic footwear market in the UK and one other
European country (this should include revenues, sales volume, price, sales channels, market shares of brands and any other indicators you consider relevant). Use this to produce a comparative analysis of the two markets setting out their key similarities and differences. (Word limit: 700 words; 70 marks).

2. Read the article: ‘Sneakernomics: All change in the trainer business’, BBC News, 30th December 2018 (Available as a pdf on Blackboard)

Write a short summary of the article explaining the key arguments it makes and critically reviewing its conclusions. (Word limit: 300 words; 30 marks).

You are encouraged to bring in your own ideas, but these should be based on evidence from wider reading or research.

Group Design Part Two: Brochure

In many instances, it may be necessary to advertise your group as a method to draw in new members. For this assignment, you need to develop a brochure (one page front and back with graphics and descriptions) that will “sell” your group as indicated in Group Design Part One to the public.

Instructions:

5. Other than the dilemma in question six (6) below, identify at least two ethical dilemmas/issues/protocols a professional in this field may experience or confront at some point during their career. Explain how to avoid the pitfalls or deal with the issues. 50 pts.

6. Your supervisor, boss, powerful client, OR governing authority (whatever is most applicable) orders, hires OR instructs (whatever applies) you to do something that you believe MIGHT be unethical (you’re not sure). Do you blindly follow the order/instructions? Suppose you check the code/rules and find the code/rule ITSELF to be unethical? Explain how you might deal with these problems. 50 pts.

You have six pages total to write your answer: 1 title page, 4 pages for the body, and 1 page for notes/references. The paper should follow the general format explained in the syllabus (the one we’ve been using over the six week term). Your answer should be supported by materials in the text, readings, and other sources you deem relevant or necessary.

As you should expect at this point, I probably did not give you enough space to answer all these questions. You are going to have to select the things you believe to be most important, and try to get the “most bang for your buck” (as the saying goes). Try to at least answer the core of each question prior to expanding your answer with support and details. You can’t hang branches unless you have a trunk and you cannot hang leaves without the branches. Try to organize your thoughts and back up your opinions and conclusions using authority.

If you are planning to be a clerk at Taco Bell after you graduate, that’s okay. I would suggest, however, that you not use that as your primary example for this final exam. Go ahead and use Taco Bell, but move your focus to a professional level, like business executive for Taco Bell Corporate. You can mingle in relationships with customers at the level of clerk, but I expect you to be able to utilize material that will make the questions above relevant. Purpose:
* To facilitate communication between students from different cultures.
* To encourage you to become familiar with a specific culture as you investigate its unique customs, traditions, values, and lifestyles.
*To help you develop sensitivity toward the people of the culture you choose to study, enabling you to communicate better with people from that culture and others.

Activity:
1. You will choose someone to interview who has different cultural background than your own or identifies with a different culture than you. Make contact with a co-worker, a neighbor, a friend of a friend. Send me an email with your interviewee’s name and email address.
2. Gather some basic background information about their culture (and their country, depending on the culture chosen) before speaking with your interview partner.
A. Look over grading rubric and SAMPLE PAPER before your interview
B. Make sure to get the full name of your interviewee, for your paper and citation page
C. Focus your interview questions and subsequent research on the following items:

A. Geographical location: continent and surrounding countries. What is it about geography that influences your perceptions of the culture? How does your partner see geographic location as significant to the history of their culture?

B. The People: (general attitudes and values) Ask about religions practiced, language(s) spoken, holidays celebrated (religious and political), gender roles and stereotypes, co-cultures within the dominant culture, etc.

C. Lifestyle: what makes up the family unit; dating/courtship rituals, marriage ceremony; recreational activities; food (everyday and specialty), housing styles; orientation toward time and privacy, common occupations for people your age

D. Customs and Courtesies: (customary behaviors) greeting rituals, what to expect when visiting someone’s home, eating courtesies, personal appearance expectations

E. Communication style: high or low context, gender influences on interpersonal communication, useful words and phrases and nonverbal gestures to know or avoid

F. Hofstede’s dimensions of cultural variability: individualism/ collectivism, high/low power distance, uncertainty avoidance, long or short term orientation…your partner may not know these categories, but they will surely give you examples that you recognize as belonging to these dimensions. Provide these examples in your paper

G. Particular information one should know to be successful as a visitor to their country, or any other information you are curious about that you think readers would be interested in knowing

3. Write a paper describing your interview and their culture. You should use the above categories to organize your paper. Make sure to include a bibliography, using MLA citations, for all of the information in your paper- both the interview and the research. The research you’ve done about the culture should be interspersed throughout the discussion of the interview. Use in-text citations…everything your partner tells you must be cited (Acerra). Every bit of information you use from researched sites must also be cited in the body of the paper. Your paper should be a minimum of five (5) full pages, double-spaced, 12 point font. Please print on both sides. Make your margins narrow.

An “A” paper includes:

A well-developed introduction and conclusion
