Generous credit policy Essay Assignment

Generous credit policy
                               Generous credit policy

Generous credit policy

An on-line retailer that sells home and children’s items, such as children’s furniture, clothing, and toys, was seeking a way to reach a new audience and stop the declining sales and revenue trends it was suffering. A market research firm hired by the retailer identified a new but potentially risky market: lower-income single parents. The new market seemed attractive because of the large number of single parents, but most of these households were severely constrained in terms of their monetary resources.

The research firm proposed that the retailer offer a generous credit policy that would allow consumers to purchase up to $500 worth of merchandise on credit without a credit check, provided they signed up for direct payment of their credit account from a checking account. Because these were high-risk consumers, the credit accounts would carry much higher than normal interest rates. The research firm believed that even with losses, enough accounts would be paid off to make the venture extremely profitable for the on-line retailer.

Should the retailer pursue this new marketing strategy? Why or why not?

Learning Activity #2

How much for that bag?

You work in logistics at Faker, Inc., an import company that buys counterfeit items from suppliers in China. Faker brings these items into the US and sells them on the streets of New York, employing over a hundred “hawkers”, all paid on commission and all making a good living. All of the “hawkers” are trained not to lie about the genuineness of whatever they are selling. In fact, Faker management encourages the “hawkers” to “tell the truth” about what customers are buying. Faker’s position is “no harm, no foul”. In fact, Faker’s CEO frequently states that the company corporate culture is one of honesty, integrity and creativity.

You are having some “issues” with the ethics of this company. You ask your trusted Ethics instructor what you should do. He suggests that you write down your thoughts on the matter by answering the following questions:

  1. Could Jeremy Bentham justify the continued existence of Faker? Explain.
  2. If Immanuel Kant worked at Faker, how would he feel about the corporate culture? Why?
  3. Do you agree with the CEO’s description of the corporate culture at Faker? Why?

Please read the following incident reports and answer the questions in short-essay form, answering the questions below:

Strategic Tactical and Administrative Crime Analysis

On Wednesday, July 25th at 2:00 a.m., Al’s 24-hour Convenient Store on South State Street was robbed by two men. One man was wearing a Halloween “Scream” mask, blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt, and unknown colored shoes. The other was wearing a “Saw” mask, blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt, and shoes. Each had a pistol; the clerk believed the “Saw” robber’s gun was black in color, as were his gloves. The “Saw” man stated, “Don’t do anything stupid and you won’t get hurt.” He had no accent. While aiming the gun at the clerk, he jumped across the counter and ordered her to open the register. She complied; he then emptied the drawer into a bag from behind the counter and told her to lie on the floor and not move for 15 minutes. He then grabbed four cartons of Marlboro cigarettes before he and his partner were heard running out of the store. The clerk did not see what direction he fled and the surveillance video camera was not functioning. No other witnesses were available.

Strategic Tactical and Administrative Crime Analysis

On Wednesday, August 5th at 1:30 a.m., Joe’s Gas-N-Go on the corner of State and Main Streets was robbed by two men. One suspect was wearing what was described as a long white-faced mask, blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt, and shoes. The other was wearing what was described as a white mask with painted facial features, blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt, and shoes. Both were carrying guns but the clerk could not identify the types of guns any further. The clerk could not remember if gloves were worn and was unable to identify what race or ethnicity the suspects might have been. The subject with the white mask with painted features pointed a gun at the clerk and said, “you won’t get hurt – don’t be stupid,” and jumped over the counter while pointing a gun at him. He ordered the clerk to open the register and lie down on the floor. The clerk did so, and the suspect emptied the register contents into a bag from behind the counter. The suspect in the long white-faced mask had an indistinguishable accent, and told the clerk not to move for 15 minutes as the other suspect was grabbing cartons of Marlboro cigarettes before jumping over the counter and leaving the store. Surveillance cameras caught the incident on tape. It was determined the vehicle involved was an early 2000’s model Ford Taurus with a temporary license plate, but the numbers could not be read. The vehicle left the parking lot traveling southbound and then turned eastbound onto Main Street at a high rate of speed.

Strategic Tactical and Administrative Crime Analysis

On Tuesday, August 18th at 11:58 p.m., Shirley’s Donut Shop on South State Street was robbed by one man. He entered the store wearing a “Saw” mask and was heard yelling “Nemo keep it running!” He wore a black hooded sweatshirt, longer black shorts, short white socks, and shoes. He quickly moved toward the counter with his gun pointed at the clerk. He told her not to “do anything stupid and she wouldn’t get hurt.” She was screaming, he took the butt of the gun and hit her across the face with it as he came over the counter. She fell to the floor but remained conscious. He took her keys and opened the register, emptying the cash into a bag from the store. He continued to tell her that she had better not “….do something stupid or she wouldn’t make it to the end of her shift.” He grabbed another bag and started taking cartons of Marlboro cigarettes. While on the floor, the clerk noticed his skin was white, and he had a large tattoo of a spider with what looked like tattooed blood droplets coming out of where the spider’s feet were depicted entering the man’s right leg. He jumped over the counter and yelled: “let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” Surveillance video did capture the event, and the vehicle was a Ford Taurus with temporary license plates. It exited the parking lot eastbound at a high rate of speed onto Main Street.

U.S. trademark law jurisprudence Burger King Case Study

Burger King, the national franchise, is banned from opening a restaurant within 20 miles of Mattoon, Illinois. So, there is not a Burger King there; no problem, right? Not so fast! In the late 1950s, Gene and Betty Hoots trademarked the iconic name. Well, they trademarked it in Illinois at least. When the national company decided to open a chain close by, the Hoots sued and won their case. However, the national chain was able to keep the name Burger King, but the Hoots were also able to keep the name in accordance with the stipulation that the national chain could not open a store within a 20-mile radius of the original store in Mattoon, Illinois.

In a minimum of 500 words, explain the reasons why this decision was made, and discuss the significance of this case in U.S. trademark law jurisprudence.

Human Population Growth Research Paper

Do you believe that the more “things” you want and possess in life makes you happier? Have you ever participated in the exercise about being stranded on a deserted island? What would you choose if you were given a list of “things” that you could have but you were only allowed to choose a limited few to survive? This is an exercise in determining what is truly “necessary” for human survival. What remains is what humans “want” to have or would like to have for whatever reason.

Human Population Growth Research Paper

The following assignment explores consumerism on a basic product or item level and its’ connection to human population growth and each of our ecological footprints. It can make you aware of personal consumption and how human behavior must change if the human population growth rate is to be reduced thereby shrinking our ecological footprints and conserving natural capital.

PART 1

Choose 2 products or items that you might find in a home or office. The products should be produced, sold and used in the United States or in a relatively affluent country. One product or item will be a simple mechanical and/or electrical device. The other product or item will NOT be mechanical or electrical. Keep it simple for example, a toaster or an automobile, and a plastic bottle or a basketball hoop.

Human Population Growth Research Paper

Research each product or item production, manufacture, growth or whatever process is used to make the product or item available for use. Consider in your research the cradle to the grave lifespan of the product or item.

For each of the two products or items, answer the following questions and provide the requested information:

  • Is this a product or item necessary for human survival?
  • What are the raw materials, chemicals, energy, etc. used to make the product and become part of the product or item?
  • Is the product made from a renewable resource (ex. A tree) or a limited resource (ex. Oil)?
  • Can the product and/or materials be recycled or reused and how?
  • Is there any other method for reducing the materials, chemicals, energy, etc. used to make the product?
  • Is there any alternative products or substitution for the product?
  • Describe how the product gets from raw materials to production, manufacture, growth, etc. to the store and then to your home. What is transportation, energy use?
  • How is the product or item disposed of or how would it be disposed of? (even if it can be partially recycled or reused)
  • Does it decompose to basic elements, nutrients if placed in a landfill? If yes, then how long does decomposition take?
  • List all the negative environmental impacts of production, use, and disposal of the product or item.
  • Would you expect the production of the product or item to most likely increase as the human population increases? If yes, then what impact would you expect on the size of each person’s ecological footprint? (note: keep in mind the product or item production, sale and use is in the United States, a relatively affluent country)
