This next essay is focused on multimedia analysis. Towards this end, you must pick up to three commercials for the same company or product and create a thesis about who the primary audience is.
There are two primary catches about your choice of audience. First, it must have at least two criteria, such as gender and age. Therefore, it’s not enough to say that something is for men, but for young men would work.
You can pick from many categories to create the two categories. However, the second catch is that a category cannot refer to the media they consume. This keeps you from saying, for instance, that fashion commercials appeal to people who like fashion or it appeals to people who like science fiction.
Once you have a movie and an audience selected, you may begin writing. The essay should focus on things from the commercial that help prove your argument. So, if the thesis is that a commercial appeals to young men, you might discuss different scenes and get into how and why those scenes appeal to this audience in a way they would not appeal to another.
While not a strict requirement, you are encouraged to find sources to help back up your audience argument. So if you are saying that a scene or character appeals to young men, it would be good if you had research to back up what young men like (in general terms psychological research, sociological research, etc.).
As always, you are graded by the quality of your argument and not the argument itself. I will never tell you that your audience is wrong, but I will tell you we need more or better arguments about why you’re right.

1) Compare and contrast two of the three major sects of Islam: Sunni, Shia, and Sufi. A strong paper will include the historical factors that contributed to the creation of the sects, an overview of the major tenants and beliefs of these groups, and a discussion on the current state of affairs between their members in a specific country (i.e., Iran, Iraq, Yemen, or Syria). Food for thought: What does the diversity between the sects, and the wide range of interpretations within Islam, tell us about Muslims/Islam?
OR
2) Compose a survey on the role/status of women in one of the following traditions:
Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. A strong paper should narrow the discussion to one or two countries and include a discussion on the roles and rights of women in both the religious and secular spheres. Possible subtopics for this survey might include marriage, divorce, sex, menstruation, childbirth, clothing, participation in organized religion, and/or governmental service (choose two or three at most). Food for thought: Eight Muslim majority countries have elected female heads of state since 1988, but the USA has never followed suit. Are the rights and privileges of women in Christianity and Judaism, measurably better than those of Islam?

Research Paper on Othello: 1200 to 1400 words (not counting the Works Cited). This is a major project, worth 15% of your final grade. This is due later in the semester; see the schedule.
The assignment has three parts:
Explanatory Paragraph, due before the essay and Works Cited/Annotated Bibliography (see the course schedule)
Annotated Bibliography with at least four secondary sources due along with the essay (A secondary source is a piece of writing that talks about your primary source, which is the work you’re investigating this case, Shakespeare’s Othello.)
The essay itself
Below I have listed a number of potential paper topics. Choose one of these or come up with a topic of your own. If you choose one of these, you must narrow it and make it yours. I will be happy to discuss topics on email with you at any time.
The Explanatory Paragraph will say what you will prove in your paper. I should be able to read this and know what to expect from your paper. Your thesis will include a judgment call an opinion. Then you will prove that opinion with three thesis points backed up with specific quotes, summary, and analysis from the play all analyzed and cited by act, scene, and line number. Your points will also be backed by analysis of cited secondary sources. Judgment calls are what keeps your paper from being simple plot summary. Learning to support an opinion with facts is a step toward developing valuable critical thinking skills.
This paragraph will evolve into your thesis statement. The three-point thesis statement should be as detailed as possible: it can be several sentences in length if you like.
This is a research paper, and you are required to find four scholarly articles in the IRSC library online databases and/or Google Scholar. You must use all four of these sources in your paper. You will most likely need to skim quite a few articles before finding three that help you make your point, so begin this process as soon as you decide on a topic. You will include these sources in the ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY, which will be the last page of your essay. See the material on MLA Style Annotated Bibliographies on how to format this assignment. I highly recommend that you find your articles on JSTOR, one of the databases available through the IRSC library. Again, at least four sources must come from the library databases and/or Google Scholar. You may use additional sources acquired elsewhere (i.e., from the internet) if you like.

The ASA’s Statement on p-Values: Context, Process and Purpose

Think about the connectedness of countries and communities throughout the globe.
For example, bad weather in Russia causes wheat price increases in African
nations, increased carbon emission in China leads to climate change and risk of natural disasters in other places. Observe Fukushima nuclear accident, its impact
on fishing industries in North America and its impact on Germany’s decision to eventually close down its nuclear plants.
This inter-connectedness is beyond the tangible connection, it also connect people emotionally and culturally. Is this inter-connectedness real or it just seems so? Or because we have been repeatedly told so, such as in “This Japanese young couple cannot afford a house because US federal reserve lowered (or raised) interest rate!”.
Because of news media coverage, we are certainly more aware of the events around the globe, but how much materially that our daily life is impact by events on the other side of the globe?
Keep an internet activity diary for 5 days and collect data on your own activities online. Consider the level of involvement (from 1, cursory browsing, to 3, intense involvement (shouting match online?) ). Also, consider if your activity confirms your preconceived notion on a given topic, or makes you aware of opinions contrary to your own, or the activity is informative and educational?
Give your thoughts, which is supported by two or more examples of your own recent activities and/or decisions that has a global impact or based on a global perspective. How much time did you spend on internet in a five-day period? And what fraction of time delivers educational benefit? Write an essay no less than 400 words.
