Consider the nomination of Merrick Garland by Barack Obama in 2016 to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia (an icon of conservative ideology).

He said the next Supreme Court justice should be chosen by the next president ó to be elected later that year. According to McConnell, “the American people should have a say in the court’s direction.

It is a president’s constitutional right to nominate a Supreme Court justice, and it is the Senate’s constitutional right to act as a check on the president and withhold its consent.” Supreme Court picks have often been controversial but there was no precedence to ignore the nominee entirely. Scalia’s seat would later be filled by Neil Gorsuch (nominated by President Donald Trump).

Based on this information (and your own outside research), analyze the process by which U.S. judges are nominated and confirmed.

Purpose of Paper IV: Study Two Methods, Results, and Discussion
1). Psychological Purpose
The psychological purpose behind Paper IV is to make sure you can summarize what you did in your second study, how you did it, and what you found. This is similar to Paper II, but you will include information related to your second independent variable in Paper IV.

For the results section in Paper IV, you will provide information about your participants, materials, and procedure. Your participant section goes first, and it includes descriptive statistics about your sample (means and standard deviations for age and percentages of gender and race/ethnicity). This is a new sample of participants, so you cannot use Paper II for this information. Make it NEW!

Your materials and procedure sections include information about what you did and how you did it. You should once again write this section for an audience who is unfamiliar with your newer study two variables, but you can actually summarize or refer back to study one variables if and when they carry over from study one to study two.

In the end, just remember that you must educate your reader about your materials and procedure, giving enough detail so they could replicate study two on their own. Your Paper IV Methods section will thus look a lot like your Paper II, but in Paper IV you will describe BOTH independent variables as well as important dependent variables (especially any new ones you added).

I suggest reviewing your Paper II feedback to see if you need more clarity in your methods descriptions, but make sure that your reader is clear about the mechanics of your new 2 X 2 factorial design.
You will also write a new Results section.

Since you now have two independent variables and potentially new dependent variables, you will not be able to reuse ANY content from Paper II. Rather, you will write a more complicated results section focusing on a 2 X 2 factorial design here.

Your Discussion section for Paper IV will be a short summary of what you found in that study. Similar to Paper II, you can make some educated guesses about what you found and why you found it, but keep the focus on study two only (in Paper V due at the end of the semester, you will include a more advanced discussion section that looks at both study one and study two, so keep the Paper IV discussion focused only on study two).

2). APA Formatting Purpose
The second purpose of Paper IV is to again teach you proper American Psychological Association (APA) formatting for methods and results. In the instructions below, I tell you how to format your paper using APA style, but this time with a focus on your 2 X 2 factorial ANOVAs. Once again, there are a lot of specific requirements in APA papers (as specific as what to italicize), so pay attention to the instructions below as well as Chapter 14 in your textbook!

3). Writing Purpose
Paper IV is intended to help you figure out how to update a Methods, Results and Discussion section using a 2 X 2 factorial design. This is more complicated than the One Way ANOVA you used in Paper II, but you should still be able to clearly and succinctly tell you readers what you did, how you did it, and what you found. Similar to Paper III, we will give you feedback and help in this paper. You will then be able to revise it for your final paper in the course (Paper V).

Thus doing a good job on Paper IV will mean fewer revisions for the final paper.
Note: The plagiarism limit is higher in this paper (up to 65%) since your classmates are doing the same study two design and will have similar results. Don’t go higher than that, though! 65% is the maximum allowed!

Your Locality

As we have observed often in class, land uses and landscapes vary significantly by location within the city. In this exercise you are to consider your own location – your neighbourhood – in the city and compare it to a contrasting location.

In the first part of the assignment you have already evaluated the neighbourhood you live in without the benefit of formal data. In the second and third parts you evaluate your neighbourhood (census tract) with the benefit of census and National Household Survey (NHS) data and compare it to benchmarks and another neighbourhood (census tract).

Part Two: Census data retrieval and presentation

Go to the Statistics Canada website: www.statcan.gc.ca and review your understanding of the concept of census tract – you can find a formal definition at the website and also find criteria for identifying the boundaries of census tracts.

You are to use two sources of data at the census tract level: the 2016 Census and the 2016 National Household Survey (NHS).

Notice you have three tab options: Place name, Postal code and Geographic code; select Postal code. Type in your home postal code (e.g. M5B2K3 is the campus postal code) and select the census tract number under Census tracts (CT) (e.g. the CT in the vicinity of the campus is 5350034.02).

This will give you your home CT and also a benchmark for comparison (such as the Toronto CMA). Study the census data. If you think you do not live in the Toronto CMA speak to Prof. Daniel. (If the above link does not work to identify your CT use a different web browser.)

Note you also have a tab option to Map the areas; do this and you will see the boundaries of your home census tract. Copy the image of the map (right click > copy image or save image as) and use it on the title page of your assignment (right click on title page > paste; or Insert > Picture).

Note that you have an option tab of Related data; if you select this you will see an option to retrieve NHS data for your CT.
Also note that you have the option to download the data in CSV format to open in an Excel spread sheet. You might want to do this to construct graphs (see below).

Collect data for your home CT and the Toronto CMA on the following themes:

From the National Household Survey (remember you can select the Related data tab to access this):

Note: For the NHS you will have to retrieve the CMA data separately because it does not automatically come up for comparison when you retrieve your CT data.

IMPORTANT.
Comparative data. In most cases it will be useful to compare your areas using proportional (percentage) data as well as the actual numbers.

Obviously in most cases you will be looking at vastly larger raw numbers for the CMA (with a population of approx. 2.7 m) compared to your home CT (average approx. 4,000) so it is sensible to compute and compare percentage data (exceptions include median income).

For example, if we compare the downtown CT 034 to the CMA we can see the CT had only 1,725 one-person households compared to 470,615 for the CMA, but one-person households as a proportion of total households is 56.4% for the CT compared to only 23.7% for the CMA.

Take care to use the appropriate total number to calculate the proportions. In the example above, it is sensible to use the total number of private households to calculate the % of one-person households. Age groups are sensibly calculated as a percentage of total population. More guidance will be given on this in class.

A helpful hint: each time a row of data is indented in the data table it is a subset of an earlier number.

Presenting the data. In most cases above you can present the data in comparative table and graph form. Where possible present the graphs for the two areas together to enable more direct comparison. Give your tables and graphs table and figure numbers and refer to these numbers in your discussion.

If you can access “figures” as you retrieve the data at the StatCan website these will not be adequate; you need to create your own. More guidance on graphing will be given in class.
Part Three: Questions and analysis

1. Using the variables you have collected for your CT, provide a comprehensive description of your area. In your description be sure to draw from the actual data in the tables and graphs and use the CMA as a comparative benchmark. Do some of the characteristics appear to be associated with each other?

2. Compare the characteristics of your neighbourhood as you perceived them in Assignment One above with your CT description. How do they differ? Which do you think is best to define your neighbourhood?
3. Where are the census data weak in describing your neighbourhood relative to your description in Assignment One?

4. Does the geographical location of your CT within the city appear to influence its characteristics? In what ways?

5. Explore the data for the CT’s below. Select one that you think contrasts your home CT. Compare your CT and this second CT in the characteristics where you think the differences are most apparent.

Use the relevant data for the second CT and your home CT in the comparison (you can present the selected comparative variables in table form but it is not necessary to graph them; use percentage data where appropriate). Does the relative location of the CTs within the city account for any differences you observe?

III. STRUCTURE

A convincing policy brief requires a specific structure and you are advised to follow this structure. You need to guide your target audience through the paper by ensuring all sections and arguments are well-structured, logically developed and focused on the topic. More specifically, your policy brief should have a(n):

  1. Issuing organization. Either use a real organizationís name, or give a very short description of the hypothetical organization that issues your policy brief: ìHuman Rights Watchî, ìlocal human rights organizationî or ìmultinational ICT Corporationî and your name.
  2. Title. Try to keep your title short, so as not to lose the attention of the reader: 10 words or less is a common rule of thumb. The title of your policy brief may seem like a minor point; however, the title is the first thing your audience will read of your brief, so it has to attract them and ensure they consider your paper. Try to make your title memorable by choosing a provocative or surprising title, so that it sticks in the readerís mind. It is often best to communicate your key message and the need for change in the title.
  3. Description of the problem and proposition of the preferred policy. In your introduction, describe the problem that requires attention and action by policy makers. Then, offer in a few sentences your suggested response to the issues you raised; that is, the preferred policy. This introductory section summarizes the key points of the policy brief.
  4. Presentation of selected policy options and discussion of their impact. The main part of your brief should contain a sociological analysis on the issue you are asked to address for each scenario. Defend your arguments against contradictory evidence where necessary and provide in-depth analysis aimed at identifying why your proposed policy is the most viable one. Use strong evidence to support your arguments.
  5. Recommendations. Propose from your perspective one specific and feasible recommendation required to address the most pressing issues outlined at the beginning of your policy brief. Your recommendation should make it clear in detail what policy-makers have to do to adopt your recommendations and why it is in their best interest to do so.
  6. Concluding remarks. Finally, try to ensure that your policy brief feels complete. After completing each individual component of your policy brief, summarize the key message at the very end. Conclude your brief by demonstrating to your readers that your response is logical, relevant and complete.
  7. Reference list. At the end of the brief, include a list of full references to the materials, which you have cited in the main text using the APA citation style.
