Bible and Western Culture Final Paper

Bible and Western Culture Final Paper Description
MUST HAVE READ: John Collins, Introduction the Hebrew Bible, especially the sections on “Proverbs” and “Job/Qoheleth.”

Bible and Western Culture Final Paper
Bible and Western Culture Final Paper

Style/Approach: The paper is an informed reflection paper. You do not need to cite any secondary works beyond the Bible. But your reflections should take into account the ideas expressed main textbook for the course, John Collins, Introduction to the Hebrew Bible. That is, you do not have to quote Collins, or any other book or video, but please take the time to read Collins’s discussion of Ecclesiastes and other wisdom books very carefully and let them generally shape how you approach the text. If you do quote a writer/book/video lecture, such as Collins, Introduction to the Hebrew Bible, then please use quotation marks and provide a footnote reference to avoid plagiarism.

Bible and Western Culture Final Paper Structure and Purpose

Structure and Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to explain the main idea(s) of the Book of Ecclesiastes and contrast this with the other wisdom books (Proverbs, Job). Here is how I would like for you to structure your paper. (Note: the suggested lengths for each section below are only suggestions; don’t get too rigid with them.)
Spend the first page or so introducing wisdom literature generally. What is wisdom literature about? What are the wisdom books of the Old Testament? What makes these books unique, and what holds them together as a genre? (1 page)
Next, focus on Proverbs for a page or so. Explain how Proverbs sets forth a fairly black-and-white picture of the world where good is rewarded and evil is punished. Give some examples by quoting some proverbs from the Book of Proverbs. This section might take most of a page. (1 page)
Now, transition to talk about the other side of wisdom literature: the dark side. Turn to the Book of Job, and give a paragraph summary. This will start to set the stage for Ecclesiastes by showing the contrast between Proverbs and Job because in the Book of Job the righteous suffer for mysterious reasons. You’ve now got the stage set for Ecclesiastes. (half-page)
Give a brief overview of the structure/outline of the Book of Ecclesiastes. Give half a page or so of introduction. (half-page)

Interpreting Ecclesiastes Bible and Western Culture Final Paper

Then move to talk about the problems with interpreting Ecclesiastes: what’s this book really saying? What the problem with the world according to the author of Ecclesiastes? What’s the author’s solution to this problem? Don’t forget to quote from Ecclesiastes here to make your argument. If you’re brave, you might want to tackle the issue of the second author or final editor of the Book of Ecclesiastes whose voice appears in chapter 12—and what this says about the message of Ecclesiastes as a whole. (3 pages)
Conclude by circling back to connect the message of Ecclesiastes with the message of Proverbs and Job. Compare and contrast. You might also want ever so briefly to conclude with a compare-and-contrast closing paragraph in which you show how Ecclesiastes differs from or (if you think so) adheres to the message of other biblical books. (1 page or so)

Socially Constructed Perception of Reality

Socially Constructed Perception of Reality Recount some instances in which you have realized after interacting with someone from a different culture (or subculture) that that person’s socially constructed perception of reality was quite different from yours.
Socially Constructed Perception of Reality

How did this difference influence the ongoing pattern of interaction?

Socially Constructed Perception of Reality Assignment Guidelines

Write a (60 word) reply to each paragraph below:1) In first year, one of the first friends I made was South Indian. While getting to know her over the past four years, I have noticed that we have some differences regarding culture. A big one is that she will be having an arranged marriage in a few years and her parents are responsible for choosing her husband. I had never met someone who is going to have an arranged marriage, so it was interesting to learn the process to choosing a potential husband. Something else that is different is that she celebrates many festivals throughout the year and a lot of them involve giving food to family and friends. Since she has no family in Canada, she always brings me Indian food during those festivals and it allows me to experience her culture’s food, which is delicious. When we have lunch together, we often discuss the different between our culture’s food (I am French) and teach each other about different dishes. Something else that is different between our two cultures is that her family is very close and welcoming to her friends. She lives at home and her mom has mentioned to me multiple times that I could show up at her house whenever I feel homesick and need a home-cooked meal. For my family, we always need a bit of notice before someone shows up at our house. Even though there are many differences in our culture, it has not changed our interaction with each other. Instead, it has allowed us to learn about each other’s culture and share interesting facts with each other.2) When interacting with one co-worker with a different culture I realized that my perception of reality was quite different. Namely, my family and I are Catholic so there are particular customs and traditions that we have followed over the years which have shaped my perception of reality. For instance, the celebration of Christmas over the holidays, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, is a relatively strong tradition in our family.

Socially Constructed Perception of Reality Detailed Descriptions

The morals, beliefs, and traditions that I developed from my religion over the years have certainly had a strong influence on my perception of reality. I noticed that my colleague, who practiced Hinduism, had a rather different perception of reality. This was most notable when he discussed how his family ate predominantly a vegetarian diet, practiced fasting on a regular basis, and when he described the traditions at a recent wedding that he had attended. For example, differences in traditions were evident in the dowry system that he described which involved offering gifts to the bride’s parents. Initially, the differences in both of our perceptions of reality led to some incongruence when interacting but over time this lessened as we started interacting more frequently. Ultimately, keeping an open mind and understanding that there are other belief systems, cultures, and traditions helped me to see things from a different perspective and better understand my friend’s perception of reality. Interestingly, I have found that some of my friends who are minorities avoid discussion of their original culture and I sometimes wonder if this is due to the pressure that they experience to assimilate to the dominant culture. This is an unfortunate reality but it is understandable as assimilation can help to reduce potential prejudice and discrimination directed at this segment of the population

The Foods of Newcomers for Various Cultures

The Foods of Newcomers for Various Cultures What to Write?
According to Albala: “Although Americans have willingly adopted the foods of newcomers, we never became a melting pot for these various cultures.

The Foods of Newcomers for Various Cultures

So-called ethnic cuisines naturally changed on foreign soil, adapting to new ingredients and popular taste—but at heart they remain clear and proud descendants of their respective countries. Their origins are also readily recognized; we are all perfectly familiar with the repertoire of Mexican, Chinese, and Italian restaurants, and increasingly now Thai, Japanese, and Salvadoran, to name a few. Eating out at such restaurants is a hallmark of mainstream American culture, and despite the spontaneous or contrived fusion of culinary styles, each retains its unique identity”( 2015, pp. x) .

Memory in Pop Culture Writing Assignment

As a result of taking this course, you are now better equipped to speculate about the causes of these memory phenomena and whether they are accurate portrayals of how our memory systems actually work – or if the artists took some creative liberty.
The Memory in Pop Culture (MPC) writing assignment requires you to write about a work of art from pop culture (e.g., movie, TV series or episode) in which memory has a prominent role in the plot and/or theme.
For this writing assignment, you must summarize and interpret the plot (including adequate descriptions of the main characters), relate the work to course concepts by explaining how it is related to memory, speculate on the relevant brain substrates, and critically evaluate its portrayal of memory phenomena. Your assignment should be written in a less formal style for a general but educated audience, 2-3 double-spaced pages in length, and formatted in APA style.
The objectives of the MPC assignment are for you to:
• view, summarize, and interpret a work or art from pop culture (e.g., movie, TV series or episode) that is somehow related to learning and memory phenomena.
• explain how the work of art relates to behavioral and neuroscientific concepts from class.
• critically evaluate the portrayal of learning and memory phenomena in pop culture.
After claiming an appropriate work of art from pop culture and composing your MPC writing assignment in Microsoft Word, you must first upload the file (Word document) as an assignment on Sakai, where it will be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin. This step is required to receive a grade for your MPC writing assignment. Then, you will post what you wrote to your group’s MPC discussion forum and comment on at least five other posts in the forum.

Inherent Elitism in Culture Industry

Inherent Elitism in Culture Industry Is there inherent elitism in Adorno’s critique of ‘culture industry’?
Or is it that all that is ‘Popular’ is necessarily democratic and egalitarian?

Inherent Elitism in Culture Industry
Inherent Elitism in Culture Industry

Critics of Adorno’s critique of jazz have often alluded to his inherent elitism leading to his dismissal of jazz. I argue here that critics of Adorno’s essays on jazz are mistaken since they fail to read his critique properly through the lens of his entire social and aesthetic theory. I will argue here that Adorno’s emphasis on the formal dimensions of art works is the only way to begin to understand his critique.

The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life

The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life of Consumption and Everyday Life What we would like you to consider in this essay:

The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life
The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life

In his book Consumption and Everyday Life, published by Routledge in 2006, Mark Paterson considers the idea that there are important links between ‘lifestyle, choice and identity as performed through the consumption and display of particular purchasable goods’ (Paterson, 2006: 49).
What are the links between consumption (and identity) in relation to your design discipline and your own practices of consumption (or non-consumption)?
The assessment is in part to prepare you for the dissertation next year and will focus on some key skills:

Primary research and Secondary research for The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life

Writing an annotated bibliography
Primary research
in week 3 of the miniblock we will conduct a visit to a department store as an exercise in the gathering of primary research data. You do not have to use this in your essay, but you should consider it as an example of how to do primary research. In particular, we will focus on observations and analysis and material culture analysis.

The Culture of Consumption and Everyday Life Secondary research

crucial to this assignment will be secondary research (a review and discussion of academic literature). This will underpin your analysis with material from recognised academic sources (books, articles from academic journals and the databases held by the library). A library induction is offered in week 4 and is intended as a development on what you did at L4, so please ensure that you attend.
For this assessment we expect you to use at least five academic sources. Of these, at least two should be journals. You should be consulting books and using the databases you were shown in library inductions. Please note, that if you do not use academic sources then your grade will be affected. (Please remind yourself of the CCS Grading Scheme which is on Weblearn.)
