Rhetorical analysis

A rhetorical analysis to be precise is typically a four-sentence paragraph distilling the main ideas in the text assigned and a contextualized statement of their importance. You can use this format if you feel more comfortable following a template that ensures inclusion of key elements of the argument. This format is not required, however. If you prefer to freely chose your own framework to critically assess the work, feel free to do so. A rhetorical analysis o precis includes the following elements:

a) A single coherent sentence identifying:
-name of the author, title of the work, and date (in parenthesis) (you can also choose to add a description of the author something like professor of At, Pulitzer prize winning journalist etc.);
-a rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “deny,” “refute,” “prove,” disprove,” “explain,” reveal challenge suggests etc.)this is important because authors usually don’t simply say things. Identifying what their rhetorical intentions are in crafting their arguments is critical in understanding the reading.
-a that clause containing the major claim (thesis statement) of the work.

b) A single coherent sentence that explains how the author develops and supports the major claim (thesis statement). (Does the author offer scientific evidence, or does she analyze underexamined aspects of a work or idea? What method, in short, does he/she use to make his/her point?)

c) A single coherent sentence stating the author’s likely purpose, followed by an “in order to” phrase.

d) A single coherent sentence describing the intended audience and/or the relationship the author establishes with the audience.

Video Analysis

Analysis Requirements: You are to address the following questions in your paper, being sure to provide evidence from the video to support your claims.

I. Include your speech title and topic.

II. What was your specific speech purpose? How well do you feel you achieved that purpose?

III. Comment on your introduction: (support with evidence from the video)

A. Did your introduction attract the attention of the audience? How do you know? What type of attention getter did you use?

B. Was your thesis statement clear?

C. How did you try to establish credibility?

D. Did you include a preview? What did you preview?

IV. From an audience ës standpoint, was your speech organized effectively and appropriately? Why or why not?

A. What type of organizational pattern did you use?

B. Why did you choose this pattern?

C. How were you transitional statements?

D. How was your source citation?

V. What impact did your message have on your listeners? How did you reach this conclusion?

VI. How comfortable did you feel during the speech? Does the video show you as more or less comfortable and confident than you really were?

VII. How dynamic do you think your delivery was during the speech? What points about your delivery please you? How could your delivery have been improved?

A. Did you maintain eye contact with the audience?

B. How appropriate was your rate of speech?

C. How appropriate was your volume?

D. How appropriate was your pitch/tone?

E. How appropriate was your use of body movement?

VIII. Was your conclusion clear? Did you summarize your main points?

IX. Overall, what were your main strengths in your speech?

X. Overall, what were your main weaknesses in your speech?

XI. What do you wish you had done/said that you did not do/say?

XII. What three things will you try to improve on in your next speech?
