Gendered Work Place Norms Experiences

Gendered Work Place Norms Experiences Answer questions from the book

Gendered Work Place Norms Experiences
Gendered Work Place Norms Experiences

How have you experienced gendered workplace norms?

How will you navigate these gendered norms/try to change them in your adult working life?

Support your argument with textual evidence from Ryle, course videos, articles, or outside reading. Gender differences in the workplace typically stem from social factors, which influence the behaviors of men and women. Some organizations welcome gender diversity and encourage the inclusion of both sexes when making company decisions and offering promotional opportunities. Other organizations discourage gender inclusion and promote bias in the workplace. With most companies, gender differences add value and varying perspectives to an organization.

Gender Sexual Divisions of Labor and Divisions

Gender Sexual Divisions of Labor and Divisions Answer Questions

Answer the following:

How are sexual divisions of labor and divisions of household labor evident in your life?

Gender Sexual Divisions of Labor and Divisions
Gender Sexual Divisions of Labor and Divisions

According to Ryle, are sexual divisions of labor and divisions of household labor necessary to society? Why or why not?

What would you suggest as an alternative to address issues of gender inequality? Support your argument with textual evidence. The gender division of labor traditionally allocated domestic production to women, activities that included providing subsistence as well as care to their families. The shift from labor exchange to a monetized economy tended to leave women with tasks and responsibilities that are not paid and therefore are excluded from national accounts.

Protected Choices Gender Based Pay

Protected Choices Gender Based Pay

  1. Do you think that a distinction should be drawn between religion and the other classes protected by the 1964 CRA, on grounds of mutability? The argument can be made that one can change an attribute such as gender with complex medical surgery, but even then such changes are not typically recognized by law. Religion, on the other hand, is the only class that at least on principle could be changed at the option of the individual. What do you think the logical underpinnings of the law are insofar as “choice” is concerned? If some choices are protected, should not all choices be protected?
  2. Would you opine that Obama’s Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and all of the anti-discrimination legislation that preceded it is doing enough to combat gender-based pay discrimination? What would you suggest be changed or added to improve things, keeping in mind such factors as confidentiality of pay rates in the private sector and competition in the workplace?

1. Why do brand name corporations in the food, electronics and garment industries rely almost exclusively on young women to work in these global commodity chains?

Explain how jobs in these industries are gendered and the benefits that
accrue to corporations due to the feminization of supply chains. Choose one supply chain for discussion.

2. Define the term ‘global care chain’. Choose one form of care work such as domestic care work or the sex trade or another type of care work (e.g. nursing)
and explain why this type of work is commodified, and why it is performed by a migrant labour force.

Explain the gendered nature of the care chain, and its
significance for social reproduction in the global economy.

3. Significant debate has arisen in feminist analyses of globalization concerning the question of whether women benefit or are harmed by their participation in wage work.

Analyze studies of women workers in either transnational reproductive care chains (e.g. domestics/nannies, nurses) or in global commodity supply chains (e.g. garment, food, electronics) to explain why women experience advantages or disadvantages in these sectors. Choose one supply chain for discussion.

4. The growth of interactive service employment in the global economy has created new types of feminized work.

Identify and explain the types of gender-specific work demanded by employers in industries such as clothing retail, hospitality, or
other personal services. Has employer demand for feminine embodied labour disadvantage workers? Explain your reasons.

5. According to Jean Pyle and Kathryn Ward ‘there are systemic linkages’ within globalization processes (trade, finance, international production) that contribute to the growth of gendered production networks. Explain how economic globalization produces gendered effects.

Masculinity Experience and Gender Policing

Masculinity Experience and Gender Policing This is my prompt…Kimmel writes that “masculinity is coerced and policed relentlessly by other guys”.

Masculinity Experience and Gender Policing
Masculinity Experience and Gender Policing

Write an essay in which you reflect on an experience you’ve observed or experienced that involves such “gender policing.”

What happened, and how did you react at the time? Did the incident(s) have any lasting effect on your thinking or behavior?

If so, how and why? Hegemonic masculinities (i.e., sets of socially accepted masculine behaviors and beliefs within a given time and culture) may affect the well-being of sexual minority men, yet quantitative relationships between these masculinities and well-being remain largely unexplored.
