Gender schemas are cognitive networks of associations that guide our perceptions about gender, and they begin taking shape early in childhood.

We begin accumulating information as to what is “girl-like” and “boy-like,” and we are continually adding information to our schema as we develop. For instance, I was once at a 3-year-old’s birthday party.

Gender and Gender Identity Development

The birthday girl was opening her gifts and received a beautiful, sparkly princess crown. Another 3-year-old party guest quickly grabbed the crown and put it on. He happened to be a little boy, and a number of the parents, including his own, laughed at him and one stated, “Ohhhh…he’s got a soft side!”

The little boy looked up at all their faces, confused, but obviously considering the comment and what it meant.

The conditioning we all receive about gender begins early, and it tends to have a significant impact on gender identity development. What was once traditionally considered “masculine” and “feminine” and “male” and “female” is changing, and our understanding of gender and gender identity development continue to evolve? For this research paper, address the following:

What is gender? How is gender different from sex? What is gender identity? What are examples of gender identity categories? What does it mean to be transgender?

What are some of the major factors influencing one’s gender identity development? Include in your discussion the way in which society’s view of gender might impact gender identity development. Be sure to include your references.

2) Female History and Physical Examination (10%).

Due Date: To be determined at onsite residency

Page Limit:  Maximum of 3 single spaced pages for each progress note.  Page limit does not include cover page.  (No reference page needed, as this is a “progress note.”)

Male and Female History and Physical Examination Instructions

PART 1: THE HISTORY:

1)  Review the Chapter’s in Bates and Dain regarding male and female reproductive health.

2) During your onsite residency, you were given the opportunity to observe and

to perform a male and a female genitourinary (GU) examination.   For this

assignment, you will submit two progress notes.

3) You will document the male history and PE as a progress note and you will document the female history and PE as a progress note.

4) Begin by documenting the history questions that you would ask a male and then a female patient who present to you for his/her “annual wellness exam.”  You will include all of the pertinent sections of the history for this assignment.  For the “cc” you may simply write: “I am here for my annual female (or male) exam.”  For the history of present illness section, you can simply write that the patient has presented for his/her annual examination and is in good health, with no concerns.

6) You are developing the “questionnaire” that you might use in practice when seeing a patient who presents for his/her “annual wellness examination.”   You will not have any patient answers to document because you did not perform the actual history.  You will, however, document the questions that you would have asked.

Male and Female History and Physical Examination

7) Use the systematic format that you have been educated to follow. Remember, this is oftentimes the only time a healthy patient will be seen by you; once a year for his/her annual exam.  You want to be as thorough as possible when gathering patient information.

Again, the history portion of this assignment is the history that you would have performed.

As students of histories of Asia would you agree that women’s creative expressions (poetry, songs, treatises, novels, memoirs, advice literature) provide historians with unique perspectives into societies of the distant past? Focus on at least three examples to elaborate how women’s voices are important sources for historians. Your essay should highlight the context in which the women you choose to write about were expressing themselves. Would you agree that Asian women, whether they were writing/composing in support of familial and societal structures or against those structures, were not simply victims of patriarchies but agents in their own rights?
