Learn what you can about the other religion: what people do, how it is represented, what significance their actions take. If you conduct an interview, ask the other person what they believe and how they live out their faith. Ask specific questions.

You must also present some documentary evidence of your encounter. For an interview, a name and contact email or phone number would suffice. This is to be included with the written Field Report.
The Field Report:
The second part of this assignment involves writing up your experience in a Field Report. This report should be 6-8 pages in length (typed, double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font or equivalent). This report should very briefly describe the religion in question before describing your experience. It should include the major features mentioned above, but also mention passages in the textbook that present or explain these observations about the other religion. For example, you might observe a group of Buddhists meditating. You would note this distinctive feature of the group and say something like:
The textbook says that when a Buddhist is meditating he or she focuses on “a physical object or even a blank wall, but usually the focal point is the breath” (176). I later asked one of the members how they meditation and they explained that they pay attention to their breathing.
When I grade I will be looking for clarity, detail, organization, and thoughtfulness in your essays. It helps to proofread what you have written before you submit it. You may wish to ask someone to read over your essay before submitting it to spot any areas that might need revision. As always, what you write needs to be in your own words, supplemented by references to the textbook. Copying and/or pasting from other sources without citing them properly is plagiarism and will result in failing.

To summarize: Your Field Report should contain the following elements:
An introduction identifying the encounter. This provides a context for the essay. Identify your interviewee, his or her religion, the time and place of the interview, and any other relevant details to help us understand the context of the interview.
A brief summary describing the religion you encountered, quoting the textbook as necessary. Avoid using internet sources, though it is acceptable to sparingly quote from an official source affiliated with the religion, provided you cite it clearly.
Organize your essay around four main features that you learned from this interview. For each feature, describe what you observe or learned. Correlate this with what you have read (see the example above). You can describe more than four features, of course, but at least four should be clearly defined in some detail.
Conclude the essay with some thoughts or observations you may have about your experience.
References for citations made. This may be just the textbook, but be sure to cite any other sources used.
Finally, please remember that all written material should be in your own words. Copying and pasting from online sources in place of your own work is plagiarism and will result in a zero.
Hospital Chaplain Interview Option:
Since I have quite a few students who are planning on a career in Nursing and other health-related fields, I will make available the option to interview a hospital chaplain for this assignment. If you choose this option, you will need to ask your subject about what he or she does as a professional, how he or she manages to counsel people of different faiths, how he or she was trained, and perhaps what memorable experience he or she has had as a chaplain. This is different because you will not focus on his or her religious beliefs so much as you will focus on his or her professional commitments as a spiritual counselor.
Also, note that the textbook does not present any information on counseling. Since part of the assignment is to correlate what you learn with what you read, you should browse two or more of the following websites. These are the websites of professional organizations that train and accredit chaplains. You should also cite this in your essay in place of citing the textbook.

Overview: In Leavenworth Papers #11 “Rangers: Selected Combat Operations in World War II,” Dr. Michael J. King notes that “The rescue of 511 American and Allied prisoners from a Japanese POW compound near Cabanatuan in the Philippines by elements of the 6th Ranger Battalion, reinforced by Alamo Scouts and Filipino guerrillas, was the most complex operation that Rangers conducted during World War II. Although the movie and other references may help you understand the scenario more, this examination scenario is based solely on the information provided in King’s work. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material – Translation from Hebrew or Greek to English

If I had a friend who was questioning why the Pastor always translated a meaning of a word from English to what it means in the original Hebrew or Greek, I would first be understanding because I used to not understand why either. I would have the thought of something like,” whats the point of him saying that, it really does not change the way I see the verse.” Then I would go on to explain why. First, I would begin to explain that in order for us to truly understand the passage we must dive deeper than the surface level of the passage. If we take a scripture from a magnet on our fridge we can easily misuse and misunderstand the scripture, but if we take the scripture from our fridge and open our bibles and study not only the verse but the context around we will be able to understand what the passage truly means on a deeper more intimate level. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material A good start would be to understand who wrote the book, then determine who the audience is. From there start at the beginning of the chapter or even the beginning of the book and break it up piece by piece. Then continue to find out what the historical context is. What world did they live in while this story was being taken place? If you do not understand a word use an expository dictionary of some sort or even look at different translations of the bible to better understand the material. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material Then look at the Greek and Hebrew meaning of the word; the origin of the language it was written in can bring you back to understanding the historical context and a deeper meaning to the word. Also consulting an expert in the language can really help. If you really what to know what the passage means and not just a surface level saying that barley gets you by, these are the ways you can build a more intimate relationship with Christ and His word. That is why our Pastor shares the knowledge he has with the original language to help us better understand the word even though we may not realize it just yet. All this may seem like a lot of work but once you start building that intimacy with the word, Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material you will realize the importance and worth it has and will not settle for anything less.

Judy, my dear friend, what you do not realize is that Pastor Edgewater is actually helping you understand the passage better! Unless you frequently study the Word, correctly, you are only seeing the surface of the meaning of the passages. Here, let me explain. Consider for a minute, how the meanings of words change over time. Since words do change, there are some words that disappear from common vocabulary or based on your location, so it is important to study them and necessary to properly study them to understand their meaning. Word study is important because it will help you develop a better understanding of the passage. Let me share with you 5 steps to Word study. Number 1 is to select your words out of the context that you would like to study. Number 2 is to identify all the places the word is located throughout the Scriptures. Number 3 is to determine what the word could mean. Number 4 is to determine that the word does mean. Maximize Collective Understanding of the Material Lastly, in Step 5, check your work. So, in conclusion, even though you might be pretty sure you understand a passage, remember that words have changed through the years, and even though you may think that you know the meaning but your definition may be different than the original meaning.
