The situation

Unsafe abortion among teenagers is one of the major concerns within the health care sector that needs to be addressed. Several stakeholders have recently shared their findings revealing that induce abortion accounts for a high proportion of deaths with many teenagers reporting the largest proportion of admission related to abortion complications in the US according to (UNFPA, 2010).

Background.

Several research findings indicate that increased rates of death related to abortion complication are as a result of unintended pregnancy, especially among teenagers. According to the United Nations Population Fund annual reports, a total of 6.8 million teen pregnancies occur annually across the world. Among these pregnancies one in five is unplanned therefore half of the unplanned pregnancy end up as induced abortion .research further reveal that there are a lot of misconception among young people about contraceptive (UNFPA ,2010).

Several circumstances limit accessibility and use of contraceptives these includes economic status among other important factors. According to the recent research findings, urban teenagers are more likely to have good knowledge and use contraceptive compared to teenagers who live in the rural areas. Some of the barriers that hinder teenagers from accessing family planning services are misconceptions and also their attitudes. Teenagers believe that they are not at risk f getting pregnant. In one the research conducted within the local neighborhood teenagers stated that they fear the side effects of using contraceptives while other indicated that lack of accessibility to these services is the biggest barriers as indicated by the (UNFPA ,2010) annual report .

Assessment of the situation

The Sterilization and the Abortion Act of 1977 are some of the similar legislation introduced to permit young girls to access contraceptives and abortion services without parent consent. Ironically some section of this law makes it illegal to provide contraceptive advice especially for girls below 16 years. Such laws limit the efforts of educating girls on preventing unintended pregnancies. In an attempt to address this concern, under the public health service Act, the Title X family planning program was initiated, this is the only federal program initiated to provide family planning services to the general population (Napili, 2014).

Through the public health service Act under the Title X program, the government allocated $300 million in 2015 to prevent unintended teenage pregnancies. However, the program is not flexible to offer youth-friendly services. Even though medical experts support the expansion of the Title X program to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy, lawmakers argue that this could be an attempt to legalize abortion which for them is an immoral act (Napili, 2014).

Recommendations

I propose that, to prevent abortion-related deaths; there is the need to improve the accessibility of contraceptive among young girls by providing important information to reduce the number of abortion in the country. For my proposal to become a bill, the first step is to make an appointment with my legislator writing a letter about my intentions. My letter will contain facts about unsafe abortion and how induced abortion accounts for a high proportion of deaths. After sending the letter, I will follow-up by calling the office to book an appointment. When given the chance to present my proposal, I would ask for her position on the proposal and also try to be tolerant of the differing views hoping that she will support the proposal.

Classical and renaissance themes have been used in a bid to bring out a new different form of art. It breaks away from the traditional themes of art since the setting depicts George Washington from the traditional forms of art, which were conservative and never depicted human beings in deeper forms such as gods since. The incorporation of classical themes and renaissance complement each other in bringing the difference between both themes out. The artist was depicting the first president of the United States as a god showing the numerous achievements that George Washington had made during the civil war and the short stint as the president of the United States. A god is seen as a symbol above everything and this was the case for George Washington. The writer depicts the piece of art showing that George Washington receiving various gift a similar treatment that is only attributed to gods. Additionally, it shows the numerous presents surrounding the status of a god[1]

Brumidi intended to show the whole world the means and methods used by George Washington to the world. Brumidi dresses George Washington as a military chief in some of the paintings to replace the picture of Zeus that had been erected a couple of years before the war. By dressing George Washington as a military chief and showing the remaining photos that were involved in the art, Brumidi manages to show the important role that George Washington played in the civil war and in the reconstruction of the nation after the civil war. Lastly Brumidi paints the picture in a variety of stages each depicting the important role that the leader played in the reconstruction of the country[2].

Historical context refers to the attitudes, moods, and conditions that happened at a particular time in history. The context refers to the setting where the event took place. In this case, the historical context is after the civil war in which George Washington had played a major role in quelling the aggression.

PART 1

GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON RESIGNING HIS COMMISSION

This painting was commissioned in 1817 and hung in 1826. The painting is significant in depicting the resignation of George Washington as commander-in-chief of the continental army. One of the most fundamental principles of American democracy is establishing a civilian authority over the military and this is well depicted by the piece of art. It is around this period, 1788-1789, that the first presidential elections in the country had been held. This event can be taken to have contributed to this painting. It is an established principle under the constitution that the country is to be led under a civil regime and power limits are to be set on the leaders. During the war for independence, congress had granted authoritative power to Washington for the purposes of steering the war but once the war had ended he chose to resign from power. The connection of the painting with the presidential elections is that, once an elected president is done with his/her turn to serve, he/she should be willing to hand off the power given to him. In this case Washington had been given this post for the purposes of commandeering the war and once the war had ended it was exemplary of him to give up the post. The artist has successfully been able to communicate in that from the view of modern day society, the president is elected for two terms and once these two terms have expired, he/she is expected to give up the position willing fully. The light emanating from the room illuminating Washington can be taken to symbolize his authority or power.[ii]

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The painting was commissioned in 1817 and hung in 1826. The painting depicts the June 28th, 1776 event when the first draft of the declaration document was presented to the congress. During this period of time, democracy had began to develop in the US in that elections for representatives, including the presidential elections, were taking place and this could have been a contributing factor leading to the creation of this painting. This document was set to establish some fundamental principles pertaining to the revolutionary war and owing to the fact that this is the period during which democracy can be stated as having begun to developed, the painting can be taken to have symbolized the importance of constitutionalism. It is enshrined as a principle of constitutionalism that the constitution shall be the central authority from which all laws to the land shall derive their authority. The declaration document was in the same way required to act as the epicentre for principles expected to guide the war. To show the importance of the document, the authors are depicted in the document as standing at the centre of the congress house. This shows the central role that this document is expected to play similar to the role of a constitution is the framework of constitutionalism.[iii]

  DISCOVERY OF THE MISSISSIPPI

The painting was commissioned in 1847 and hung in 1855. The painting depicts a Spanish explorer, Hernando De Soto, arriving at the Mississippi river riding on a horse. The painting also shows wounded men who had been wounded the previous day following an attack by the Indians. As a desire for peace, the artist depicts the Native Americans watching wearily in despair as the explorer and his troops arrive and the chief holding out his pipe of peace. The central part of the drawing is colourful whilst the outer part is depicted with gloomy colours.  This variation of colour can be taken to depict the mood with the colourful part symbolizing hope for peace while the dark parts show the negative effect of lack of peace, that is, a gloomy environment. This period of the 19th century had been witnessed by a number of attacks and conflicts in the country and this could have been one of the contributing factors leading to the drawing of the painting. Some of the wars witnessed included battle of Maguaga, Brownston, Detroit and the Tecumseh’s war. The arrival of the explorer is seen as symbolizing the arrival of peace putting into consideration that the Mississippi river is the ultimate symbol of freedom and De Soto is considered as being the first documented European to have seen the river. His arrival is thus set to free the people form war and grant them peace and this is to be shown by the colourful central part of the painting. The artist in this case has been very successful in communicating this message from a modern viewer perspective.[iv]

Landing of Columbus

This painting was commissioned in 1836 and hung in 1847. The painting depicts Christopher Columbus and his crew on a beach having landed there in their expedition to find a westward route from Europe to China, Japan and other unknown islands. This period was the period during which the trans-Atlantic economy was in a state of flux. There was therefore a need by the Europeans to find ways of intervening in trade without stifling it. This could have been one of the factors behind the drawing of this painting during this period of time. The painting depicts the people in the painting as adventurous as if in the spirit of making new discoveries as it is put across that Columbus stands in such a manner that depicts humility. The need to discover new routes from Europe to other regions can be considered as an important one for the purposes of boosting the fluxing trade activities. Although the artist can be considered as having being successful in putting across this message, its difficult to some extent for a modern viewer to decipher it since it would require a wide knowledge on issues concerning trade. This would therefore require for the viewer to have first researched widely on this topic.

PART 2

THE STATE OF MARYLAND

The state of Maryland is considered to be the birthplace of the United States National Anthem as well as the birthplace of religious freedom. The unequivocal contribution of the state to the rich history of the United States of America is insurmountable and proof of this lies in the National Statuary hall collections. Key examples of the representatives of this fine state are as shown below.[vi]

  1. CHARLES CAROLL

Charles Carroll was born on the 19th of September 1793 in Annapolis. He was the only child to Charles Carroll of Annapolis and Elizabeth Brooke. He was educated in Jesuit Schools until his graduation in 1755 after which he pursued law in in London. Due to the fact that he was a Roman Catholic he was bared by the Maryland Statute from politics, practicing law and voting. This propelled him to speak out against such discrimination and in 1772; he held a debate conducted through various newspapers under the pseudonym “first citizen” which spoke against the governor’s proclamation of increasing legal fees to states officers and protestant clergy.

It should be noted that he was also a linchpin in the American Revolution that sought independence from Britain. Due to his notoriety as the first citizen, he served on various committees of correspondence.

In the 1770’s Carroll became a powerful voice for independence. He seems convinced that only violence could break the impasse with Great Britain and as a result he played a key role in the burning down in the Annapolis Harbor of the Peggy Stewart ship which  was destroyed as part of the tea party protests against British excise duties enacted by the parliament on tea.

His recognition as a voice to the people led to 1774 where he was commissioned with Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Chase to seek aid from Canada. He furthermore, was appointed as delegate to the Continental congress on July 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1778 he retired from the Continental congress so as to serve the state of Maryland in drafting its first constitution. His unparalleled efforts were recognized in 1789 when he became the first senator of the state of Maryland, a post he retired from in 1792.

To sum it up, the efforts of such a person in life deserve only to be immortalized and engraved in stone for future generations to behold and follow in the same footsteps. Therefore the addition of one Charles Caroll of Carlton in the National Statuary Collection is not an honor that we bestow upon ourselves, rather an honor he bestows upon us.

JOHN HANSON

John Hanson was born on the 3rd of April 1721 in Port Tobacco Parish in Charles County to Samuel and Elizabeth Hanson. He was presumably privately tutored and in 1744 married Jane Contee and six years later his career in public service began.in 1757 he was elected to represent  Charles county in the lower house of the Maryland General Assembly . In 1765 he played a key role in opposing the stamp Act and acted as one of the chairs to the committee that drafted instructions to for Maryland Delegates to the Stamp act Congress.

After leaving the service in 1769 he rejoined it at 1775 after the relation between Great Britain and the colonies reached a breaking point. His service was invaluable as he was active in raising troops and providing arms. This led to his recognition in 1779 where he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. His public service experience was invaluable, especially in resolving the western land issues thus facilitating the ratification of the Articles of Confederation.

One of the most outstanding roles in his career was in 17 81- 1782 where he was the President of the United States in Congress Assembled under the Articles of the Confederation. It is his service that established America’s position in the worlds. This is because he helped establish necessary services during his tenure such as a post office, a national bank and a consular service. The debt America owes such a man is insurmountable. Through his invaluable service, America was able to fully establish itself as a country. Therefore his place in the National Statuary collection is not necessary, it is mandatory.

Legendary Hoax

Museum of Hoaxes provides a collection of various hoaxes during the 19th century.  One of the legendary hoaxes was that of “Composite Princetonian”. This hoax appeared in the front page of one of the dailies – The Daily Princetonian. The photo was alluded to have been created after analysis of 2100 students of Princeton, out of which 12 were selected and combined to come up with the composite photo.  This hoax was revealed later that the doctored photo was that of Errol Flynn but it did not include his mustache (Hoaxes. org. 2014). The haircut was interferedwith a little bit.

In case the hoax was presented to me, I would have taken various steps to evaluate it to determine indeed whether the allegations are true or not. The first step is to find out the person responsible for its publication. I will evaluate the credential and the affiliation of the organization presenting the information. This will aim to determine their level of authority and reliability of the publishers (SDSU.edu. 2010).  Then I will analyze the content as well try to check if other source of information has such information. Will as well ponder on whether the publisher tempered with the information.

The hoax provided require one to critically evaluate the source of information because the information provided is questionable. It elicits doubts in the mind of an individual on how photos of different people can be fused into one. This is something that would have attracted different media attention and therefore, there was no way only this one publication could capture such a story.

To prevent oneself from being fooled by hoaxes or any other misinformation, it is important to take time to reflect on the photo or information. Ask various questions such as what is the source of the information, the credibility of the source, the intention behind the photo, the alternative source of information available, the style, content and accuracy and completeness of the information, the sponsors of the photo or information among many others. These questions will help to provide insights about the credibility of the photo or information

Different people view graffiti in different perspectives. Some people in society view graffiti as a pollution, criminal and an eyesore. The way people perceive this defers and it is not a crime for them to have these opinions and views. The magnitude of this has been witnessed in the setting up of laws and legislations concerning graffiti.  For instance, some of the cities such as King City are debating new anti-graffiti by laws something that is geared to elicit mixed reaction. This discussion develops its argument on graffiti from the perspective of the Local Business Owners Association. The paper deliberates on the arguments for and against this issue.

Graffiti are graphical sketches usually on vantage locations in urban centers. The proponents of these graffiti argue, it is their way of expressing their minds on various aspects that concern the society (Ken, 2006). They use this platform to send a message to the authorities on specific aspects in the society that they found not appropriate. However, opponents have claimed that individuals that have criminal records and not concerned about the welfare of the people do these.

The local Business Owners are important segment in the society that has their voice on the graffiti. This business owners association always advocates for the welfare of their businesses in various location. The fact that graffiti is associated with vandalisms and criminal is an issue of concern to this business owners association. Security is a key concern for many businesses in the urban centers and therefore, most of them are adamant about these graffiti (Arifa & Paul, 2008). Graffiti are associated with hooliganism and destruction. This is an act that is done mostly by youths and is carried out at night. This therefore, provides an opportunity for these youths to engage in criminal activities in the urban centers.  Even if those that draw this graffiti do not commit crime, they necessitate criminal as criminal groups get an opportunity to engage in their criminal activities

Graffiti are as well methods that people my trigger an appraisal against the government or certain category of people.  Many states face different problems such as youth unemployment, corruption, crime, drug abuse, poor leadership and such. This therefore, provides an opportunity for the youths to use them to trigger a call to an action.  Government may face challenges in governance if these graffiti’s are used to trigger an appraisal against it.  Graffiti are therefore a means of communicating certain ideas and thoughts (Banksy,  2005). People in a country will use this to begin an appraisal that may lead to disruption of the businesses. Political instability is a threat to businesses.  During such moments, business loses lots of revenue through vandalism and hooliganism. Lots of property is destroyed and many of the shops are attacked.   Doing business during such moments becomes a nightmare therefore; most of the local business owners association may not support these graffiti on grounds that they trigger violence among the citizens.  They pose a threat to their business something that is not supported by many businesses.

Many business owners association would prefer other means of communicating rather than graffiti.  The youths can voice their concerns to the authorities through formal means such as through discussions and meetings (Ganz, 2004). Using graffiti arouses emotions in the members of the public. When this emotion goes beyond their control, it results to destruction. The reason why most states are formulating anti-graffiti laws is to help address such concerns that lead to huge consequences on the economy of the country as a whole.

In some society, graffiti is accepted as part of the people culture.   They are used as a source of expression or a source of culture and therefore, people views them positively  (Alice, (2008). Such graffiti therefore are not emotive but depict the rich culture and the way people lead their lives. Such graffiti are not harmful to the business owners and therefore are embraced because of the facts that they showcase the culture of the people. Some still think are that graffiti are one of the ways of artistic expression and part of the urban culture (Koon-Hwee, 2001).  Such arguments therefore, have made graffiti to be viewed positively. Still some of the states responsible for managing cities view graffiti as unlawful act.  It makes the city look untidy and therefore oppose this form of art.

What makes graffiti art is the message they convey to the members of the public.  When they convey positive messages that exemplifies on the values and cultures of the people, they promote unity and culture of the people. This is therefore viewed as an art. However, when they convey a negative message, or influence youths and citizens to up rise against the government to cause war and fighting then it makes it vandalism (Tierney, 2005).  Messages that inform the public on important aspects such as good governance and corruption in society are important as they help to transform the society. However, if they are used to propagate crimes and vandalism, then it becomes apparent that they are perpetrating crimes and vandalisms. Therefore, this contributes to the considerations of whether the graffiti are appropriate “in place” or inappropriate “out of place” (Ella, 2007).

If these graffiti are out of place, various parties such as the leadership, business associations and other stakeholders will raise the red flag and require that immediate action is taken to avoid them.

Even though, these graffiti are perceived differently among the members of the society, it is important that an amicable solution is reached to ensure that these graffiti are not used to trigger conflict and crime but to promote values and cultures of the people. Those opposed and those supporting them need to come together and deliberate on the purpose of using graffiti. This will also help to alleviate misunderstanding between the members of the community. I do support the opposing stands of the local business owners about these graffiti’s especially if they are likely to promote violence and vandalism.  Business owners have a reason to be worried about the safety of their business if these graffiti perpetrated crime and hooliganism.

The term ‘Shinto’ refers to the polytheistic religion that is practiced in Japan. Scholars believe that this religion originated in Japan because historical records show that it has no external origins from outside the country. It has however been influenced by the country’s neighbors such as China and Korea. Today the religion is practiced through rituals as well as a series of attitudes held by the believers. These include openness, deliberate simplicity and the use of nature.

Openness in the Shinto religion is used as a means of encouraging the believers to welcome those considered to be outsiders. What this does is to allow the believers to go on a journey of self-discovery through experiences of what is unknown to them. This mostly refers to a new culture or way of doing things. Shinto followers, therefore, seek diverse experiences that then contribute to the shaping of their personalities. As such there are a large number of Japanese who participate in the different sub-cultures that are in existence today.

Simplicity is another highly valued feature of Shinto Religion. Unlike other faiths that have complex structures, Shintoism is based on a series of principles whose interpretation is highly subjective. What this means is that its believers practice the faith based on their immediate circumstances. The Japanese who practice this do not have a particular religious text that they use for guidance.

The worship of different elements that exist in nature due to the belief that they need to be one with the world. The reason for worshipping things in their natural world is for them to be able to connect with the world around them.
