Routine Report Assignment
Scenario:
Your company is the largest private employer in your metropolitan area, and the 43,500
employees in your workforce have a tremendous impact on local traffic. A group of city and
county transportation officials recently approached your CEO with a request to explore
ways to reduce this impact. The CEO, Ms. Suarez, has assigned you the task of analyzing
the workforce’s transportation habits and attitudes as a first step towards identifying
potential solutions. She is willing to consider anything from subsidized bus passes to
company -owned shuttle buses to telecommuting, but the decision requires a thorough
understanding of employee transportation needs. Figures 1 – 4 summarize data you have
collected in an employee survey.
Figure 1: Employee Carpool Habits
• Frequency of Use: Carpooling Portion of Workforce

• Every day, every week 10,138 (23%)

• Certain days, every week 4,361 (11%)

• Randomly 983 (2%)

• Never 28,018 (64%)
Figure 2: Use of Public Transportation
• Frequency of Use: Public Transportation Portion of Workforce

• Every day, every week 23,556 (54%)

• Certain days, every week 2,029 (5%)

• Randomly 5,862 (13%)

• Never 12,053 (28%)
Figure 3: Effect of Potential Improvements to Public Transportation
Which of the following would you encourage you to use public transportation more
frequently? (Check all that apply) Portion of Respondents . Employees can check more than one.

• Increased perceptions of safety 4,932 (28%)
• Improved cleanliness 852 (5%)
• Reduced commute times 7,285 (41%)
• Greater convenience: fewer transfers 3,278 (18%)
• Greater convenience: more stops 1,155 (6%)
• Lower (or subsidized) fares 5,634 (31%)
• Nothing could encourage me to take public transportation 8,294 (46%)
Note: This question was asked to those respondents who use public transportation randomly
or never, a subgroup that represents 17,915 employees or 41% of the workforce.
Figure 4: Is Telecommuting An Option?

• Does the nature of your work make telecommuting a realistic option? Portion of
Workforce
• Yes, every day 3,460 (8%)
• Yes, several days a week 8,521 (20%)
• Yes, random days 12,918 (30%)
• No 18,601 (42%)
Task:
Write a recommendation memo report to your supervisor, Ms. Suarez illustrating the data
you have collected and recommending two ways to solve this problem.
This is a short report; therefore, your report will not include a title page, a table of
contents, or appendices. The visualized data must be within the text (body) of the report;
do not place the data at the end of the report.
Organizational Guidelines:
TO: Ms. Suarez, CEO
FROM: Insert Your Name
DATE: Month Day, Year
SUBJECT: Workforce Transportation Habits Begin your report memo with a brief introductory statement outlining the background,
problem/opportunity/purpose, scope, and organization of the report. Refer to your text for
assistance.
In the body of your report, you are required to illustrate each set of data with figures.
Keep in mind this portion of the report requires an appropriate heading, and each of the
four figures requires a reference statement, a caption, and if applicable, a legend. Do not
place the data in a bulleted/numbered list or in a table.
For example:
APPROPRIATE SECTION HEADING
Precede the graph with a reference statement explaining what the graph illustrates. For
example, Figure 1 illustrates the employees’ carpool habits.
Figure 1: Employees’ Carpool Habits
Create the figure. Determine which figure best illustrates the data. Should you use a pie
chart, a bar chart or a line chart? Once you have decided which chart to use, review your
text for format requirements. How large should the chart be? Should the data be an
ascending or descending order? Where should you place the labels? Does the chart require a
legend? Is the visual clear, complete, concise, connected, and compelling (see textbook for
guidelines)?
Note: If you are not familiar with how to create chart using MSWord or importing them from
Excel and embedding them into MSWord, you should consult the Help function in MSWord
or you may also find it useful to review the following webpages:
Immediately following the chart, explain the significance of the data. This is referred to as
the illustration’s caption.
For example, As you can see from Figure 1,….
After all four chart are completed, offer two possible solutions to the problem. Each
solution should be logically derived from the data and each must be adequately explained.
This section of the report also requires an appropriate heading. There should only be two
solutions for the entire report.
For example:
APPROPRIATE SECTION HEADING
Introduce this section of the report with a paragraph previewing your recommendations.
Solution 1: XXX
Explain your solution and why it is a logical option.
Solution 2: XXX
Explain your solution and why it is a logical option.Close your report with a summary of the key points as they appeared in the report body. Do
not introduce new facts into your closing paragraph. End by inviting Ms. Suarez to contact
you to discuss the report’s recommendations.

Please note:
1. the paper needs to have a standard title page which gives an original title for the paper.
2. Use a minimum of 10 resources and given them proper credit via-in-text citations (not footnotes or endnotes) and bibliography in either MLA format.
3. Do not use wikipedia as a primary source for the term paper. Stay with the proven academic resources for this assignment.
4. remember that academic writing style calls for semiformal diction, avoidance of slang and avoidance of the occasional second person reference.
5. Please do not use the links I shared above as two of the sources. You need to find extra 10 other than those two.
6. Usage factors such as spelling, sentence structure, idiom an punctuation will be counted as well as the content in the scoring of all written work.

Language Learning and Grammar Analysis

Language Learning and Grammar Analysis Information about the assignment:
· Word count – 1200 words (+/- 10%). Penalties will be applied for work above or below these limits.

Language Learning and Grammar Analysis
Language Learning and Grammar Analysis

For this assignment, you will choose a short, authentic text from the internet (but your text in appendix and write the full source in the references) and
create a set of classroom tasks/activities focusing on a particular aspect of grammar of your choice. Note that you do not need to create a detailed lesson
plan for this assignment.
You will begin by analysing the text with respect to its grammar, through which you should identify an appropriate area of grammar to focus on for the
classroom tasks. This means that you should briefly analyse the text in terms of preferably one, but at most two aspects of grammar, e.g.: verb phrases,
modality, conjunctions, tense, noun phrases, active/passive voice. Make sure you consider common difficulties for English learners. You do not need to
analyse every single aspect of grammar in the whole text!
Following the initial analysis, create two different activities to help students discover and practise the aspect(s) of grammar analysed in the text.
Your assignment should follow the general structure below:
1. Introduction (approx 200 words)
a. Which text/area of language you’ve chosen and why (put full text in appendix, line-numbered for ease of reference)
b. Very briefly signpost the rest of the assignment
2. Analysis (approx 600 words)
· This should show analysis of the language in the text in terms of language learning/teaching.
· How you structure it is up to you, but please use headings or other ‘signposts’ to show each area of analysis clearly.
· Annotated texts, for e.g. tense, aspect, modality, clause structure/combining etc. should be placed in a labelled appendix and the important points
summarised and exemplified in the main body of the report.
· There is no limit to how many annotated texts you include in your appendices, and these do not count towards the word limit of your assignment. However,
they should all be very clearly labelled and the reader should be clearly referred to these at the appropriate points in the assignment.
3. Activities (approx 400 words)
Describe (briefly) and evaluate the activities/tasks you have devised, clearly showing how they relate to your analysis of the text and/or to what you have
learnt about that grammar point in the module. The activities themselves should be presented in an appendix, so this section should summarise, exemplify and
evaluate rather than present the actual activities as you would use them in the classroom.

Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition

Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition For this paper, you will argue for a particular definition of bilingual. You will support
your definition of evidence and examples and your final paper will be polished!

Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition
Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition

Explaining Your Definition of What it Means to Be Bilingual.
Your definition of being bilingual will not be a single sentence. Instead, you will provide
examples, apply readings from class, and incorporate your personal experience, resulting
in a sophisticated and thought-provoking definition of literacy that lasts several pages.
According to Miriam-Webster, the formal definition of bilingual is: using or able to use
two languages especially with equal fluency. Being bilingual is much more than that,
though. When you speak a different language, people react. It may signal that you are
from a different culture. It may indicate that you come from a wealthy family. Perhaps,
a person may learn another language for business. It can define who you are.
1. Make arguments for your definition. Your definition needs to be defensible and
interesting, and use what we learned in class.
2. Incorporate class readings. Use strategies discussed (summary, paraphrase,
quotation analysis, etc.).
‘Quote from Trimbur’ and remember that you can agree and disagree with him! We will read a couple of more articles next week.
3. Give concrete examples. We will consider many examples and situations, asking what counts as an additional language and what does not (for instance, if texting is fingered speech, then it should count. Slang could count. So could foreign music.) You will need to provide three examples to support your definition. A good example is both interesting and original avoid any obvious examples
already covered in class.
4. Incorporate your own views. Many of you wrote passionate essays about your experiences with bilingualism. (This essay is not a personal response paper, so this should be only part of the paper and may be folded in with your concrete examples, see #3.)

Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition and Writing Guidelines

You are writing this paper for a general, academic audience. This means that you can?t
assume that people have read the articles we read in class. This is where the summary
skills you’ve worked on will come into play? introduce a source before using it.
What I’m Grading On
– Your ability to argue convincingly. The reader needs to be convinced by what you
say, which means that you provide evidence and good examples. There should not be
gaping holes in your definition.
– Your ability to incorporate course readings and ideas. This includes summarizing
and quoting from class sources, as we’ve worked on in class.

Rethinking Bilingual and Literacy Definition Examples

– Your ability to incorporate concrete examples from your own life. We have worked
on using your own experience in an academic way.
– Your ability to revise your work based on my feedback and peer review. Revise,
read aloud, and rewrite!
– Your ability to meet the assignment requirements. So if you’re struggling, talk to me.
– Your definition must be at least four pages (to the bottom of the fourth page),
and no longer than six pages. One inch margins, 12 point standard font.

I may impress you like a story because I began my account of myself without preamble, slipping overboard into the water and striking out for the shore. but my life did not begin in the waves. There was a life before the water which stretched back to my desolate searching in Brazil, thence of the years when my daughter was still with me, and so on back to the day I was born. All of which makes up a story I do not choose to tell. I choose not to tell it because to no one, not even to you, do I owe proof that I am a substantial being with a substantial history in the world. I choose rather tell of the island, of myself and Cruso and Friday and what we three did there: for I am a free woman who asserts her freedom by telling her story according to her own desire.” 131
