Write an essay of eight double-spaced pages, set in 12-point Times New Roman, addressing one of the following topics. Your essay must contain a clearly identifiable argument that explicitly answers all parts of one of these questions and is supported by plausible interpretation of lots and lots of evidence from the text. The most important part of your argument should be stated concisely and compellingly in the last sentence of your first paragraph. (An eight-page paper ends near the bottom of the 8th page.)
Identify which topic you’re addressing by retyping the question, single-spaced in 10-point font, before the first paragraph of your paper. Be sure to give your paper a meaningful title. I recommend that you avoid starting your essay with a dictionary definition or with a phrase like “Throughout human history” or “Since the dawn of time….”
PROMPTS:
Every account of collective political liberation is told from some point of view. Aristotle’s notion of freedom revolves around an active citizen. The inactive so-called “citizens” and others who refuse to deliberate are the only ones who are ‘justly’ slaves, from Aristotle’s point of view, and therefore they contribute to the polis with their work. Exodus details a long process of liberation told from the point of view of the enslaved, who need to be freed not only from work, but from enslavement to desires that contributed to their enslavement. What crucial insights does each of these perspectives offer on liberation? What does each perspective leave out? What synthesis would you offer as a more complete picture of liberation?
Aristotle’s polis and Cicero’s res publica offer anthro- or human-centric pictures of community, as created by a deliberation over the good or agreement on law and common interests. Five Books of Moses sets aside “the human” as a basis for community, and offers “covenant” in its place. Augustine demotes Civitas Terrena as a site of human fulfillment, offering Civitas Dei as the true alternative. Put two of these accounts into conversation around the question of whether and how “the human” is sufficient or insufficient as a source for a politics of the good life. What dilemmas or problems does such a conversation reveal?
Which account offers the most compelling resolution of the dilemmas or problems, and why?
(Note: you may not pair Aristotle and Cicero to answer this question.)
Consider how Aristotle describes the polis in The Politics, as a means of identifying spaces of deliberation and freedom, alongside Augustine’s picture of the idealized Civitas Dei, as an authoritative means for realizing people’s potential. Each urges his audience to think in new ways about the relation of that freedom and that potential to embodiment. What is each author’s way of thinking about the body, and which of these in your view offers the most potential as a model for a citizen’s relation to his (or even her) own body? (Note: focus your discussion of Aristotle’s theorization of the polis in books I and III.)
Aristotle, Cicero, and Augustine implicitly draw upon different conceptions of time (which the lectures have framed as telos, foundings, and æternitas) as they theorize how to ward off political corruption or degeneration. Choosing two of these texts and their respective assumptions about time and theorization of politics, first analyze how different conceptions of time support divergent ways of thinking about degeneration. What’s the most politically attractive way to avoid political degeneration, and what concept of time should we therefore endorse in our theorizing? End your essay by briefly reflecting on what your answer would mean for thinking about political corruption today.

Political Philosophy Nozicks Wilt Chamb Subject- Political Philosophy Essay Title: Set out Nozick’s Wilt Chamberlain argument. Citation style The Oxford University Standard for Citation Of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) is to be used for footnotes and the bibliography. Suggested Readings: 1. Anarchy, State, and Utopia- Anarchy, State, and Utopia 2. The Cambridge Companion to Nozick’s Anarchy, State, and Utopia II – Structure
Political Philosophy Nozicks Wilt Chamb Introduction
1. Introduction ♣ Cut to the chase right off by saying what the specific problem of the essay is and why it is a problem. “People call sexual practices perverse all the time, but it is hard to figure out what the criteria for perversion are and what difference it makes whether those practices are perverse or not.” ♣ Avoid long-winded, flowery and vague introductions such as: “Philosophy has been studied for a long time….” ♣ Give your thesis up front, saying in the first paragraph exactly what position you’re going to be arguing for. ♣ Set out how you understand and will use the key terms in your essay, especially any that are used in the question itself. 2. Argument. Go for a methodical, point-by-point presentation. The reader should know in each part of the essay what the essay is trying to prove, and how it is trying to prove it. (The reader should be able to use all of his or her brain-power learning from the essay and assessing whether its arguments are plausible—and should be able to spend no brain-power trying to figure out what the essay is trying to prove.) 3. All essays should include critical evaluation of the topic under discussion. It’s not enough just to describe what others have said. By the end the readers should understand the arguments that have led you to your own conclusions about the topic.
Political Philosophy Nozicks Wilt Chamb Conclusion
4. Conclusion. Avoid glib conclusions such as “this is a very difficult subject” and “there are arguments on both sides”. Your reader knows that, especially as you should have presented just those arguments. Your conclusion should be a considered response to the arguments you have given, challenged and evaluated. At this point, don’t be afraid to give your own personal response to the question, so long as it is based on and follows from the material you have discussed. The examiner does want to see that you have engaged with the material rather than simply regurgitated it. III – Style and economy 1. Clarity is the main virtue of a philosophy essay. It’s better to write a clear boring essay than a muddled entertaining one. 2. Simplicity: Simpler words and short sentences are often clearer. Don’t go for fancy terms or complex sentences unless you absolutely have to. (Note: One almost never has to.) 3. Define the essay’s main terms with precision early on (you may have done this in the introduction). a. E.g. “Act utilitarianism is the thesis that an action is right if and only if it is the action that produces the most utility.” 4. Focus: Don’t lay out more of a view than you need to. There are no marks for simply repeating everything you know about a subject. On the contrary, there are ‘higher skills marks’ available for knowing how to leave out irrelevant material. a. E.g. if your problem is that utilitarianism may be too demanding, you may not have to discuss in the essay the different interpretations of what utility is (whether there is a distinction between higher and lower pleasures, etc.). Focusing appropriately on the question at hand is one of the best ways to get marks in philosophy. Meandering aimlessly is a very fast way of losing them. 5. Depth: Go in-depth concerning the problem specified by the essay topic; you don’t need to say everything about everything. Better to explore one subject in detail than two subjects superficially. 6. If you’re arguing against someone’s position, present your opponent’s arguments as sympathetically as possible. Your arguments are only as strong as the arguments they defeat. 7. These essays may not need to use many (or even any) quotes from the readings. 8. Very rarely will you need to discuss the work of more than two or three philosophers in any detail in an essay? It is better to pick representatives of the positions you are discussing and evaluating these in depth than to rattle off a dozen names that you barely mention again. 9. Avoid starting sentences by ‘I feel’ or ‘I believe.’ The point of the essay is to convince others using good arguments, not simply to express oneself. 10. Avoid sweeping and unsupported statements that may be controversial, e.g., “There are no right answers in morality”. Tips: Answer the questions clearly and in a focus, way Say one thing very clearly, or if questions ask for two then two things Don’t want a general setting out of theory, pick the way that you want, say there are other ways but talk about the most important ones. Get marks for what you leave out just as much as what you leave in. Always think what your strongest suggestions are. Look for the deepest level of the points, theory. Strong structure Methodical, step by step structure Make 6-10 points
I plan to address how specific religious groups can be motivated to vote according to ideology, such as Christians voting in favor of “pro-life” candidates. I will also address cases where issues of social significance might cause religious groups to vote “against” their ideology. Archbishop Timothy Broglio said of President Obama’s 2008 win, “most people did not vote for Obama because of his position on abortion, but in spite of it.” (Duin, Julia. “Catholic Voting Tied to Economy.” Washington Times, The). Obama also received overwhelming Muslim support, despite his position on homosexuality. I also plan to address religion’s impact on public education, especially the ongoing legal battle over creationism in schools. While on the topic of schools, I’d like to spend some time looking at the history and current status of prayer in American schools. I would also like to specifically address some “hot button” constitutional issues. We frame our existence in an ongoing series of complicated rituals that enable our existence physically and give it meaning metaphysically, spiritually and ecumenically. The laws and precepts in the U.S. were largely written by puritanical or at least Puritans white males. While some of our founders may not have fully embraced these ideals, many were, at the very least heavily exposed to the Judeo-Christian value system. In the U.S. many seem to embrace the fact that we have the oldest constitution. I’m not so sure that operating by a document created in 100 working days, 230 years ago is an achievement. Similarly, a dogmatic belief that the Christian Bible, Hebrew Bible, or Muslim Quran, as they exist today, are (respectively) 100% the inspired word of God, would have some interesting and observable effects on your worldview.
Professor: Very ambitious project. Just be sure to include all the instructions require:
Your paper should discuss at least two of the traditions discussed, possibly referring to more.
Your paper should discuss at least four (again, preferably more) of Smart’s six dimensions of religion (doctrinal, mythic, ethical, ritual, experiential, social)
Your paper should acknowledge at least two (more are preferred) of the worldviews discussed in Smart, chapter 2.

The Budget office of the State of Texas is contemplating two alternative plans to explore a change in how it utilizes press releases.
Plan A: Send press releases 1 through 5 (Group 1) using the existing approach. Send press releases 6 through 10 (Group 2) using the new approach. All newspapers on their list will receive both groups of releases. Compare average number of news items resulting from Group 1 with the number resulting from Group 2.
Plan B: Compare the number of news items being shown in 3 groups of newspapers. · Group 1: 25 randomly assigned papers will receive press releases 1-5 using the new approach. · Group 2: 25 randomly assigned papers will receive press releases 1-5 using the old approach. · Group 3: 25 remaining papers will not receive press releases 1-5.
The Budget office is exploring if either approach leads to increased readership which is evaluated by the number of papers sold.
*Use Research Methods to answer questions below*
What would your null and alternative hypothesis be to address this question?
Would you look at the entire population or do some type of sampling to examine this question? Explain why or why not.
If you were to gather data through a survey what types of error should you be particularly keen to avoid?
What measures of variability and central tendency would you use to evaluate plans A and B. List only one measure of variability and one measure of central tendency. If comparing the means between these plans tell me the type of test that you would use and the variables used in the analysis?
How do you evaluate whether your findings from the above analysis should be used to make changes in how press releases are used? (Hint: What specifically are you looking for in your data analysis findings to help you understand if your findings are salient?)
