Week 1 – Assignment: Examine Data Types and Characteristics, Creating an Online Survey

Instructions
This assignment will focus on the different data (variable) types based on measurement levels. This activity will also introduce the survey method of gathering data. One of the things you need to do in creating a survey is to decide on the data type—how you are going to measure your variables.

For this assignment, create an account (free version) on the SurveyMonkey online system and then create a survey by reverse engineering an existing data set that came from a survey data set.

Go to www.surveymonkey.com and set up a free account. You can use your NCU email address to set up this account if you do not want to use a personal email.

Reconstruct (reverse engineer) and enter into SurveyMonkey a new survey that would be collected from the data found in the Excel file: “Student Survey.” SurveyMonkey has several tutorials on how to use their product and how to set up questions and response choices. On their website, you will also find some very good templates illustrating several common survey types; use them as guidelines.

Pay particular attention to specifying the data type of the responses and proper wording and instructions for the respondent to have as a guide encouraging valid responses.

Once you create your survey, please copy the URL link that SurveyMonkey generates for a respondent to fill out and paste it into a Word document. This Word document is what you will upload for your assignment.

Your survey should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Adolescents and the Law Research Paper

Adolescents and the Law
Adolescents and the Law

Opinion Paper:Adolescents and the Law

Final Instructions

Society has long been ambivalent about risk-taking, law-breaking adolescents. They don’t seem fully adult—and therefore perhaps not fully culpable (responsible) for their actions. Perhaps they can’t truly comprehend the impact of their bad deeds—or perhaps they are too impulsive to stop those bad deeds. And then there is the question of what to do with the law-breakers, once they are caught. Does their immaturity suggest that they should receive less punishment and more rehabilitation than those who are fully adult when the commit the same crime? And since the adolescents will likely one day return to the community, how can they be kept on track to a successful re-entry?

Awareness of the adolescent’s special status (somewhere between childhood and adulthood) has led to the creation of a juvenile justice system that is different from the adult system. This system has been around for decades, but it was challenged in the 1990’s by people reacting to a spike in juvenile and young adult crime, some of it very violent and even repetitive. Adolescent law-breakers were NOT deterred by weak and short punishments, it was argued. Perhaps the harsher adult justice system would set them straight.

This assignment asks you to bring social science data to the discussion about punishment, rehabilitation, and re-entry by those who were teens when they broke the law.

There are two questions which you will consider.

First, what does science tell us about brain development and how it affects behavior, especially risk-taking behavior and impulsivity, which might spill over into law-breaking? Describe the research findings (hint: see the assigned articles and the scaffold’s links on teen brain). Is charging the adolescent as an adult appropriate in light of this research? In your opinion, is youth a “defense” against a claim of culpability or responsibility?

Second, where should an adolescent be held before and after being tried? Is the adult system suitable? (hint: see the scaffold’s links on turning a lawbreaking teen around) What will be the likely outcomes of being held there? Does the adolescent learn the lesson that was intended? Is the adolescent more likely to desist after the tough treatment in adult prison compared to the more lenient treatment in the juvenile system? In what other ways is the teen harmed or benefitted in the adult system? Is there an argument for keeping some young offenders in the community—and not in any detention– with services and safeguards for public safety?

Expectations (use this as a checklist)
:
1. Read all the 3 articles assigned by Professor (Beckman_2004, Bonnie Scott 2013, and Brain Defense: The Young Brain.)
2. Look at the 2 scaffold lists of links to find materials that relate to the two broad questions above. Read or view some of the videos or articles.
3. Choose at least two additional sources to include in your paper. These are in addition to the 3 sources provided by Professor. You may use some of the written sources that I have provided, as long as you find one new source on your own.

4. Write a paper (3-5 pages long) that addresses the 2 issues above. They both come back to the same question: should adolescents under 18 be treated as adults? Express your opinions but support them with research findings. The findings are the critical social science contribution. (You are not expected to use all of the material provided.)

5. Use citations for these findings or quotations, etc. that you report.

6. Attach a works cited list.

7. Don’t mess with your margins (1 inch) or font size (12-point) just to make your paper appear longer. (Really, do you think you’re fooling instructors with that?) I am not docking your grade for length, but a very short paper probably just doesn’t have enough content—that’s the thing. I also don’t deduct points for papers that go beyond the guidelines.

Remember: You will need the following, in addition to this description of the assignment: 3 assigned articles (Beckman 2004, Bonnie Scott 2013 and Brain Defense The Young Brain) and the scaffold lists of videos and articles.

The scaffold lists are called

Personal Development Plan Assignment

Personal Development Plan
Personal Development Plan

Personal Development Plan

A development plan is a key component of a performance management plan because it guides performance improvement. Create a short-term development plan (1-2 years) and a long-term development plan (3-5 years) for yourself. In both two plans, address these items:

Development objectives,
How skills will be acquired,
A timeline for acquisition, and
Standards and measures for accessing improvement.
Keep the following in mind:

You are writing your own development plan. First, complete an assessment of your professional needs and/or deficiencies and career plans (e.g., complete MBA degree) and then write the plan. Assume you are submitting the development plan to your faculty member, the manager.
This should be an assessment of your professional needs/deficiencies and career plans. It can be written in a paragraph form or it can be bulleted in format with expanded comments.

Food Insecurity Discussion Assignment

Food Insecurity Discussion
Food Insecurity Discussion

Food Insecurity Discussion

The discussion this week requires that you first watch the video
documentary “A Place At the Table“.
“The film explains with devastating simplicity why so many go hungry in a country with more than enough food to go round.” — London Evening Standard
“How can you be both hungry and obese? It’s a paradox that more and more people in the United States are beginning to understand, and a question that’s convincingly answered in Finding North, A PROVOCATIVE DOCUMENTARY about hunger within America’s own borders.” — Press+

The 90 minute documentary has been broken into 4 separate clips to make it easier to view and download.
You should watch all four and then respond to the following questions:
*According to the film, one in six Americans says they don’t always have enough to eat.
Were you aware that hunger was such a big problem in the United States?
Explain. Was there a particular character whose story you found especially compelling? How so? Be specific.
*What did you learn from the film that you did not
already know?
*What steps do you think the hospitality industry could take to assist with the problem of Food Insecurity?

Theory of Planned Behaviour and Sleep Deprivation

Theory of Planned Behaviour and Sleep Deprivation

Theory of Planned Behaviour and Sleep Deprivation

Writing Assignments – Health Behaviour Change Theory: We will be learning about health prevention and promotion behaviours early in our course. There are many potential applications of health behaviour change theories to real world situations. Smoking cessation, diet and exercise, substance abuse, stress reduction, and other health behaviours are often attempted at the individual or group level, with varying success rates. Your job for this assignment is to apply a behaviour change theory/model to a specific health behavour:

1 – choose one theory/model of health behaviour change from the three covered in lecture and Ch. 3 of our textbook (the Health Belief Model, the Theory of Planned Behaviour, or the Transtheoretical Model).

2 – chose one health behaviour you feel is important to address and lends itself to an examination/discussion, based on your chosen theory/model. Any one of the three theories mentioned above is acceptable, but some will ‘fit’ or make sense better than others, depending on your health topic.

3 – Write a report that combines your chosen theory and health topic, as follows: You must explain the theory clearly, summarize the relevant research on that theory, summarize the research on your health behaviour topic, then discuss how the theory can be applied to your health behaviour.

To organize your writing, you will want to define, explain, and review (summarize and discuss) the existing empirical research literature on your chosen theory (how has it been used to study behaviour – both your chosen health behaviour and other behaviour examples) Then you will review (summarize and discuss) the research relevant to your health behaviour topic (what do we know about it, what helps/hinders it). You will then discuss how the theory/model applies to your chosen health topic (explain how each aspect of theory would apply or work to explain a person’s health behaviour or lack of behaviour). Note: your theory may or may not have been applied to your exact health topic already; this is ok – you can extrapolate from relevant findings, e.g., maybe your topic of chocolate consumption has not been studied with the HBM, but you can draw on general healthy eating research instead.

You will need to read and rely on (cite) the original theory/model paper and any other early papers about the theory and its development; AND include at least 12 additional relevant peer-reviewed empirical journal articles. The majority (10+) should be relatively recent (published after 2000). You may want to include additional review articles, as these can be very useful, but they will not count towards your required sources.

Your paper should be about 7 – 7½ (double-spaced) pages of text, with a separate cover page, and references page, all formatted in APA style. Use the space wisely: edit to be concise so you can cover more content, but do use all the space to be sure you cover your topic thoroughly.
