The Rules
1. General. Develop an original, textually informed, and philosophical (vs. literary, historical, scientific, religious, etc.) response to any ONE of the choices indicated above. Your ‘assessment’ (see Rule 4a) should take the form of a cogent or sound argument. FYI, the premises in a sound argument guarantee the truth of their conclusion, but in a cogent one they establish only that their conclusion is likely.

2. Evidence. a) Two sorts are required: primary (= the author(s) and reading(s) indicated in the question) and secondary (= scholarship in related research literature). For 100-level courses, you are expected to include three to five secondary sources in addition to the primary one(s); for 200- level courses, it’s four to six. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, webpages (even those by university professors), newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, and the like are prohibited because they carry little to no weight, at least when compared to peer-reviewed articles written by experts in the particular field of research – and that’s why you’ll lose marks if you include them.

b) Many students get quite angry when they realize – inevitably too late to do anything about it – that if they’d only remembered this Rule 2 they could’ve avoided losing all those marks under the ‘quality of research’ parameter (see Rule 5 below). Your paper constitutes a research task whose leeway while considerable does not extend so far as to permit you to include in your supporting evidence what has here been categorically defined as out of bounds, or to exclude what has here been required. Think long and hard about this: It’s a big part of my job to make scholarly demands of you and an even bigger part of yours to do everything in your power to fulfil them. This rule in no way precludes you from surprising us with your inventiveness in fulfilling those expectations.

3. Length. For 100-level courses, four to six double-spaced pages in a no-nonsense font (e.g. Times New Roman 12) and 1″ margins all around; for 200-level, the page count is six to eight. (See illustration in Rule 4c below.)

4. Format. (a) First half of paper = analysis, description; all your ‘research’ is to be confined to this half, including explanations and/or examples of points expressed in the primary material; secondary sources are often quite helpful for this purpose. Second half of paper = assessment, evaluation; your own argument is restricted to this half. Because ‘your own argument’ = your point plus your reasons, if you agree with A’s argument then it falls to you to say why you think A’s reasons are such good ones. If the reporter’s job is to describe things accurately but the editor’s is to express a well-reasoned opinion about something that’s already been reported, then be a reporter in the first half and an editor in the second.

(b) Small but significant tweak. Steal a bit of space from the first half of your paper for a vitally important sub-section: the ‘Abstract’. Divide its 50-word limit into no more than two sentences, one expressing your point and the other expressing your supporting reasons. The abstract is a summary of your own argument (= your intellectual results) rather than about what you’ll be doing in the paper. (If you don’t know what an argument is, find out before you lose lots of marks under the ‘quality of own argument’ parameter just because you didn’t.) In this way, the abstract – in effect a ‘report’ on your own argument – naturally belongs in the first half of your paper. Note that MLA format reserves some space for name, course, title, etc. on the first page of the body; for our purposes, move that information to your title page and use the resulting freed- up space for your abstract. Papers lacking this two-sentence abstract will not earn a grade higher than B+ no matter how excellent they otherwise are; it’s hard work, but once you actually do it you’ll see why it was worth learning how to do.

Abstract
(goof example) In this paper I will argue that X. My main reason is that Y.
In this case, X and Y are statements, and as such it makes sense to ask whether or not they are true, but not whether or not they exist.

compare:
(Bad example) In this paper I will discuss X, which will be compared to Y.
Here, X and Y are subjects or topics but not statements, and as such it might make sense to ask whether or not they exist, but not whether or not they are true. This sort of paper uses words to say things (maybe interesting, maybe not) without ever actually arguing anything. Only an argument even attempts to make a point.
Warning: Any such paper will fail to meet the expectations of this course unless your ‘discussion’ is in fact an argument.
(Bad example) A thinks X. A’s main reason is Y.
This is a descriptive report on A’s argument rather than one of your own. The most that can be said, in this scenario, is that it’s true that something exists – namely that the author’s argument is in fact what you say it is.
Warning: Any such paper will fail to meet the expectations of this course because you are to invent an argument of your own rather than to present someone else’s.

5. Evaluation criteria. Major criterion: Quality of content (80%, divided equally between ‘quality of own argument’ and ‘quality of research’). Minor criterion: Quality of expression (20%), including such things as clarity, substance, conciseness, spelling/grammar, and eloquence; this parameter also covers lots of other things, for instance those pertinent to format (quality of Title page, Works Cited page, and section sub-titles) as well as style of referencing. Evaluation form included below; please attach a duly filled-in copy to the physical version you hand in for formal evaluation.

6. Deductions. Submission of work for credit in this course implies your acceptance of the following:
a) It loses some marks due to lateness. The lateness penalty is 10% per solar day (e.g. from Mon 8.31 a.m. to Tue 8.30 a.m.); note that the lateness clock doesn’t stop ticking just because the University is open when you’re ready to hand in your work: I or my designate (but not a department secretary) must also be physically available to receive it. So: If you miss me because I’m not on campus that day (e.g. Thursdays, Fridays), then you’ve just lost another 10% for each of them. The price clearly goes up very quickly.

b) It loses some marks due to unoriginality. A SafeAssign “matching score” above 25% often indicates that you’re relying too much on others and not enough on yourself. Each additional 5% block beyond the limit (26–30%, 31–35%, etc.) in the body of your paper is subject to an unoriginality penalty of 5%.

c) It loses all marks due to the particular sort of unoriginality known as plagiarism. The crime of ACADEMIC THEFT doesn’t distinguish between ‘not much’ on one hand and ‘too much’ on the other, so correct it before it’s too late to avoid sinking your ship – in this course if not also beyond. The consequences are severe and uncompromising (see FAHSS template for definition). Use your 48-hour penalty-free extension to make any needed adjustments given the feedback from SafeAssign’s “Matching Score” feature. It’s as easy to fix as giving credit where it belongs and thus explains why the penalty for not fixing it is so significant. The due date is preliminary and for a private informational purpose whereas the deadline is final and for a public declaratory one.

7. Completeness. Papers will remain unevaluated (while lateness penalties continue to accrue) until they are complete, and they are not ‘complete’ until they are submitted in two formats: (i) physical, directly to me – or, if for some good reason that is not possible, to my assistant – and (ii) electronic, directly via Blackboard (Resources > ‘Research assignment upload link’; to discover the “Matching” score for yours, upload your file, click ‘Submit’, and wait for your SafeAssign matching score to be returned; it takes a little while, so be patient). It is the later of these two dates/times (physical/electronic) that will count for official ‘submitted by’ purposes. You are advised to check for unoriginality and plagiarism well before the deadline, because after that although you’ll be able to submit your work you’ll not be able to make any needed adjustments to it; in order to check for unoriginality you will need to ensure that your file type (*.docx, *.pdf, etc.) can actually be processed by SafeAssign. Also, you’ll find that any reason along the lines of “But *&^%$#@!, I’ve never used SafeAssign before!” will go absolutely nowhere with me. Always upload your latest version in case of horrifying last-minute computer-related malfunctions, just to be sure you have something on file even if it’s not the final and best response you were able eventually to formulate. Note that physical papers will not be accepted unless they are stapled in the upper left-hand corner: no dog-ears, envelopes, ribbons, or paper clips.

8. Extensions. Everyone gets two no-questions-asked penalty-free days. Don’t confuse the DUE DATE

and the DEADLINE; the due date/time does not include an extension sufficient to handle all emergencies whether computer-related or not (e.g. morbidity, mortality) that arise in the last two days. That’s why the the time budget stipulated in Rule 6 above includes your having set aside 48 hours to make any needed adjustments to your unoriginality score on SafeAssign. Get started, then, as soon as the choices are published so that you can absorb any delays imposed by the things beyond your control in those last two days – everyone knows they always happen at the worst possible time (the last day or two), so if you plan for them you won’t be devastated. On the plus side, if nothing terribly devastating happens, you’ll be able to improve your work even more given the windfall of two extra days.
If you need more than that, though, you have to pay the lateness fee. Lateness continues until you provide me with a copy of the documentary evidence in support of a compassionate-grounds claim (see FAHSS course outline template).

Course Assessment – Essay Assignment.
Instructions
The essay part of the assessment for BU5596 International Finance consists of two parts – a problem and a traditional essay component. The combined essay assignment is worth 80 % of the total mark for the course. The remaining 20 % of the marks for the assessment are based on an in-class
quiz held on Wednesday 27 February.
The problem part of the essay assignment is worth 25 % of the grade for the essay assignment. The traditional essay component is worth 75 % of the total marks for the essay assignment. The essay assignment is an individual assignment. You may use whatever books, lecture notes, etc. you wish, but
you may not discuss either part of the essay assignment with anyone. In particular, you should not discuss either part of the assignment with
other students. Nor should you read another student’s assignment. You may ask me questions about the assignment.
For full-time students, the essay assignment must be submitted no later than 10:00 AM, Monday, 4 March 2019.
For part-time students, the essay assignment must be submitted no later than 10:00 AM, Monday, 11 March 2019.
Two paper copies of the essay assignment should be submitted. The traditional essay component of the essay assignment must be typed. The problem part of the essay assignment, which involves a decision tree, does not need to be typed. However, it should be written neatly and clearly. In order to grade the assignment, I must be able to read it.
For the paper copies, fasten both the problem part and the traditional essay component together with a stapler or other fastener before
submitting it. The paper copies should be submitted in the box labeled PGT Management near the Business School office on the second floor of the

Part A. Traditional Essay Component of the Essay Assignment (75 % of the total mark)
The traditional essay component of the essay assignment should not be more than 3000 words in length.

I would like you to write an essay discussing at least two and not more than three of the four concepts listed below.
i. the concept of diversification and its relation to the opportunity cost of capital.
ii. the concept of the law of one price and the idea of arbitrage.
iii. the concept of a call option.
iv. any other concept which was discussed in the course and which you believe to be interesting and important.
For each concept that you discuss, clearly explain the concept.
Also discuss why the concept is important for financial decision making and the analysis of investments.
Your grade for the traditional essay component will be based in part on (i) how clearly you explain the concepts you choose to discuss and (ii) how well you
explain why the concepts are important for financial decision making in general and for the analysis of investments. A well written, well organized
essay is also likely to earn a higher grade.
Part B. Problem Part of the Essay (25 % of the total mark) An investor (a venture capitalist) is considering whether or not to set up a
company to produce a new product. There are two periods, period 0 and period 1. The investor must decide whether to set up the company in period 0,
in period 1, or not to set up the company at all.
If the investor sets up the company in period 0, then the investor must pay a setup cost with a present value of F = 450 in period 0. In addition to paying
this cost, the investor will receive the net present value produced by the company in period 0, V0 = 100, and the net present value V1 produced in period 1. The net present values V0 and V1 include the revenue obtained from the sale of the new product minus varying operating costs and taxes.
However, as is common practice, these present values do not include the setup cost, F, which is specified as a separate item in this paragraph.
For simplicity, we also assume that setting up the company is instantaneous, so that the new product can be produced in the same period that the company
is set up. Note that the cost of setting up the company, F, is paid only in the period in which the company is first set up.

From the perspective of period 0, the net present value V1 produced by the company in period 1 is uncertain because of uncertainty in the future demand  for the new product. The investor believes that there is a 50% chance that the
demand for the new product will be high at the beginning of period 1. In other words, there is a probability of 0.5 that the demand for the new product is high in period 1. In this case, the net present value produced by the company in
period 1 will take the high value VH = 600.
With probability 0.5, the demand for the new product will be low in period 1. In this case, the net present value produced by the company in period 1 will take
the low value VL = 150.
.
Suppose, for simplicity, that the net present value produced by the company in period 1 is the same whether the company is set up in period 0 or in
period 1. Suppose also that the present value of the cost setting up the company, F, is the same whether the company is set up in period 0 or in
period 1.
All numerical values for the net present values produced by the company and for the cost of setting up the company, F, are present values denominated in millions of pounds.
Suppose also that the investor is risk neutral and wishes to maximise the expected net present value of the opportunity to set up the company
(including the cost of setting up the company and, if necessary, the cost of the marketing study described below).
The investor has three choices in period 0. (i) The investor can choose to pay the setup cost F in period 0 and set up the company immediately in period 0.
(ii) The investor can choose in period 0 to abandon the opportunity to set up the company in either period 0 or period 1. In this case, the investor neither
receives nor loses anything and so obtains an expected net present value of 0. (iii) The investor can choose to defer the decision to setup the company
until period 1 and, in period 0, commission a marketing study to determine whether or not the demand for the new product will be high or low in period 1.
Let M indicate the present value of the cost of the marketing study. The cost M must be paid at the beginning of period 0.
By deferring the decision to setup the company and commissioning the marketing study, the investor learns whether or not the net present value
obtained by setting up the company in period 1 will be high or low before having to decide whether or not to pay the setup cost F to set up the company
in period 1. Of course, by choosing to wait until period 1, the investor also loses the net present value V0 that could have been produced by the company in period 0.

Suppose that the investor needs the results of the marketing study to know whether the demand for the new product will be high or low before he or she
must decide whether to set up the company in period 1. Hence, it makes no 4 sense for the investor in this example to defer the decision to set up the
company until period 1 unless the investor also commissions the marketing study.

Questions
(i) Draw a decision tree representing the decision problem facing the investor.

(ii) Suppose that M = 30 million pounds. What is the optimal policy for the investor to follow? Carefully explain your answer.
(iii) For what positive values of M would the investor’s optimal choice be to commission the marketing study and wait until period 1 to decide whether or not to set up the company? Carefully explain your reasoning.
(iv) Suppose now, for simplicity, that the cost of the marketing study is negligible. In particular, let M = 0. To what extent would you agree that, if
M = 0, then, for any positive values of V0, VH and VL, it would always be optimal to commission the marketing study and wait until period 1 to decide
whether or not to set up the company? Explain your answer.
(v) Continue to suppose that M = 0. To what extent would you agree that the expected net present value obtained by choosing to commission the
marketing study and wait until period 1 to decide whether or not to set up the company would always be at least as large as the expected net present value obtained by choosing in period 0 to abandon the opportunity to set up the company in either period 0 or period 1? Explain your answer. To what extent
does your explanation depend on the assumption that M = 0?

Part I: Identifying Constraints
Each short scenario describes a business situation. For each scenario, please write a short paragraph explaining which constraint or constraints is/are present, and why.
A taxi company limits its drivers to one eight-hour shift per day, with one half-hour break for a meal. A taxi cannot carry more than three passengers, all in the back seat, and cannot combine stops; that is, all the passengers must be going to the same destination.

Acme Unlimited sells custom machine tools. The sales department must send each order to Engineering for approval. There are no exceptions to this rule, which creates delays.
An online university offers six-week terms, with three two-week modules per term. Each module is supposedly limited to one topic, or set of related topics. Faculty members find it difficult to create interesting courses, and students express frustration with their learning experiences.

Part II: Describing Constraints
For each situation, write down the appropriate constraint. Please use the standard symbols “+” and “-” for plus and minus, and “ * ” for multiplication; however, if you find the symbols “≤” and “≥” difficult to keep straight, you may write “LE” for “Less than or equal to,” and “GE” for “Greater than or equal to.”

Example: An office is buying filing cabinets. The Model A cabinet holds a maximum of 3 cubic feet of files. Model B holds a maximum of 4.5 cubic feet of files. At any time, the office will have a maximum of 17 cubic feet of files that need to be stored. (A bit more cabinet space wouldn’t be a problem, but not enough would be. The files can’t be stacked on the floor.) Write a constraint on the number of cabinets the office should acquire.

A refinery produces gasoline and fuel oil under the following constraints.

Demand constraints:
Minimum daily demand for fuel oil = 3 million gallons (fuel ≥ 3)
Maximum daily demand for gasoline = 6.4 million gallons (gas ≤ 6.4)
Production constraints:
Refining one gallon of fuel oil produces at least 0.5 gallons of gasoline.
(fuel ≤ 0.5*gas; gas ≥ 2 fuel
Wholesale prices (earned by the refinery):
Gas: $1.90 per gallon
Fuel oil: $1.5 per gallon.

Your job is to maximize the refinery’s daily profit by determining the optimum mix of fuel oil and gasoline that should be produced. The correct answer consists of a number for fuel oil, and a number for gasoline, that maximizes the following profit equation:
P = (1.90)*gas + (1.5)*fuel (Answer will be in millions of dollars.)
Run at least 10 trials, and enter the data into a table that should look something like this:

Here’s how the “LP Estimation” worksheet is set up:

The tentative production goals are between the allowable minimum and maximum for each. Note that the maximum fuel oil that can be produced depends upon the gas production. Conversely, the minimum gas that can be produced depends upon the fuel oil production. If you don’t use the worksheet, the challenge will be to find test values for both oil and gas production that jointly satisfy the constraints.

Note: This is NOT how such a problem is usually solved. Rather, it is solved using LP. The purpose of this exercise is to acquaint you with the type of problem that’s usually solved using LP, and give you an appreciation of how difficult such a problem would be without LP.

The content needs to be referenced throughout and an accurate reference list should be included at the end of the essay.

Care needs to be taken to ensure English spelling rather than American English spelling of words is used. All abbreviations need to be written in full when first mentioned, with the abbreviation in brackets next to the full terminology. The abbreviation can then be used within the remainder of the essay. For example spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM).

Sentences need to be grammatically correct and construction needs careful attention. Make sure that every sentence is making one point that has not been said before. Every sentence should have a subject, a verb, and an object. Words (apart from those in common usage, for example, conjunctions/connectives) should not be repeated within the one sentence and preferably not in the subsequent or the preceding sentence. Use a thesaurus to find an alternative word. Remember that short, concise sentences are almost always better than long, complicated ones. Try to avoid non-specific words if possible; for example, “nice”, “good”, “very”, “vast”. Please avoid the use of “etc”.

Each paragraph should have only one theme. Each paragraph should contain more than one sentence, but not be too long. About two or three paragraphs to a page are preferable. Having a paragraph extending over more than one page is too long. Leave one line space (and one only) between paragraphs.

Do not use quotations excessively. Consider rewriting in your own words. Quotations should always be referenced with page numbers and discussed. Do not use them to write your work for you. If a quotation is a phrase and can be placed within a sentence of the text it should go within the text in inverted commas. Quotations of a sentence or more should be outside the text, one space below the preceding text and one space above the following text. In this case, the quotation should be single-spaced and indented from each margin by approximately 3.5cms.
