How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

Social media plays a vital role and has virtually impacted every aspect of our lives. It is famous and considered a widely known symbol of popularity. Social media are applications and websites that allow their users to create accounts and share contents as well as participate in social networking. It is considered the best source to get information about what is happening around the globe. In nosedive episode in Black mirror, which was directed by Joe Wright, we see how stressful it is for people to maintain high ratings in social media which they use to access what they want.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

While social media has woven itself into the fabric of nearly everyone’s life making them enjoy it, it has brought about some disturbing aspects which can ruin a person’s life. This paper will evaluate how social media has brought about social isolation, bullying, and worries about the future of our society by looking at the events in a nosedive in Black Mirror Season 3.

Imagine waking up one day, and all you care about is your life rate and the fact that your whole life depends on it whether it’s your house, friends, work and your fundamental rights. And from in this episode from Black Mirror describe the scary fact that our world is walking into. I remember last Thursday I organized a party and let me tell you when l say social media is killing our social life, I am not lying because basically what people care about is taking pictures for their Instagram and snapchat stories, even when we gather as a family everyone is on their phones checking their social media, which is a sad fact.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

Social media often make us feel entertained and condition us to stay online most of the time thus stripping us critical social skills. Most of the time that young people spend on social media makes them feel socially isolated. People who spend more than two hours on social media daily experience a decreased sense of social belonging, less fulfilling relationships and lower involvement with other people (Lapper et al. 117). As people increase the hours they spend on social media, their physical lives continue to fade away. Some people pretend to be happy on social media while they are suffering from within (Miller et al. 35). High levels of online networking diminish the ability of one to socialize in a direct environment by reducing self-confidence as well as increasing segregation. From the series, the fixation with publicized social ratings on social media miscalculates the relationships Lacie has with her friends.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

The scariest part about Nosedive isn’t that this social game could become a reality in the

future; it’s that this social game is already a reality now. The specifics of it aren’t as clear-cut as in

the episode, with all its points systems and whatnot, but it’s a pretty good analogy for life as it is.

People want to be famous, and not just that high school definition of “popular”; I’m talking about

the kind of popularity that gets you at the top of this hierarchical system we’ve set ourselves up in.

In fact, there was a scene in the episode were lacy got to a coffee shop and got a coffee and a biscuit, and we can clearly tell that she hated it, but she still got it so that she can get the digital attention as unfortunately most of us are guilty of doing, which outline the narcissistic tendency.

In a study titled ” Narcissism and social media “proved that social media is linked directly to Narcissism as in that quote” the growth of social media has been potentially linked to increasing cultural manifestations of narcissismí (Nosedive).

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

With the increase in social networking sites, bullying on the internet has increased significantly. Social media has also influenced many people to engage in violence. Bullying on social media is just as wrong as any other bullying, and it is sometimes worse. Most online platform users tend to overlook the fact that words said online can hurt just, For instance, teenagers who do not get a lot of likes on their Instagram and Facebook posts often feel like they are inferior and it usually destroys their self-esteem.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

Many people can go to extreme lengths to win likes from their followers such as posting nude pictures. People get consumed by social media, and they end up not having any time to enjoy

real life pleasures even those as simple as physical socialization. Most people who spend more time on social media spend the time obsessing about their followers and the number of likes that

they get as well as the perfectly curated lives of others which makes them develop feelings of

jealousy, exclusion and even depression. Most people feel like their lives do not measure up to the

perfect lives of their friends who are continually streaming across social media feeds. This raises

a concern as the social media influences taking control over the lives of many people especially

the youths.

An increasing number of parents are getting concerned about social media usage because

the culture is destroying the self-esteem of many adolescents. High levels of using social media

are linked to an addiction of smartphones as well as disruption in the sleeping patterns of most

people (Lapper et al. 112). Most teenagers know what is happening around the world, but they

have never known life without social media. The rewards of using social media sites which

includes likes, comments, messages, and shares trigger the same pleasure-controlling chemical

which is released in the body when one is addicted to substance abuse or gambling. Teens are

addicted to receiving likes on their posts which can lead to obsession and depression. Social media

is one of the paths of being famous, and most teens are attracted to fame. However, the cost for

being famous might be too high for the youths and may be forced to push the boundaries of

behaviors which are morally acceptable.

Most people have to go through their social media accounts before they sleep. They use

the technology way close to the time we get to bed thus affecting how we sleep. Addiction to

social media makes people stay up late at night thus stopping them from getting quality sleep.

People should, therefore, set limits on how often and also the maximum time they should be on

social media every day. With the various number of applications which enhance body images,

many people may spend more time feeling down about themselves and also jealous of the pictures

of perfection, perfect body, makeup, and faces. Since social media platforms build an environment

based on rating people and earning approval through comments and likes, it creates a focus on how

one looks, their social belonging as well as self-esteem. With the use of social media, people focus

more on what is going on in their pages, and they end up paying little attention to the people around

them. People no longer care about the feelings of those around them because they are more focused

on what is happening on social media.

I don’t think Lacie is ignorant of how problematic the social media system in her world is,

just as we aren’t entirely ignorant about this kind of stuff in our own lives. When talking to the

truck driver, she goes on a tirade about how being able to live the way she wants sounds nice but

isn’t realistically achievable while retaining happiness. This is “just how the world is,” and her

frustration is so relatable because in some ways she’s right (Nosedive). As much as everyone

wishes that life wasn’t built on this metagame that places social standing so high on our priorities,

there’s nothing we can do about it. It is what it is. As a story told by a person under the name of Ewe about the Uber app and the Evaluation property he saidî Uber now allows the driver to rate the passengers and vice versa. It’s completely optional but when I rated a driver and then she gave me a low rating, one I did not deserve as I did not do or say anything. That made me feel some kind of way. I didn’t like it at all, and it made me want to give future drivers an excellent rating (even if they didn’t deserve it). Rather than do that, I’ve decided to not rate any Uber driver at all.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

Anyway, I can see our society going the way of this episode, and that is just scary.

The ending to me seems to say that we shouldn’t worry so much about whether or not we’re

playing the game of life correctly, and instead focus more on what we want to do in it. Do we want

to “win,” or do we want to have fun? What does that mean for us, Also I loved how the lenses they

wore at that episode was a metaphor filter for looking at the world from a colorful mostly ërose

tintedí perspective as if it was the best it could ever be, Lacie didn’t just psychotically pursue a

high rating. She had to give it so much attention since she wasn’t very good at it. In a society where

the availability of things and the cost of things is so heavily influenced by charisma and social

success, the consequences of being not quite awesome are dire. This is the part I found most

disturbing; I see this kind of happening all the time, even without an explicit rating system. Our

society has rewards for charisma that are positively disgusting and unfair if you are on the losing

end of them. Real-world social media like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube are coded

to enforce the charisma rules, so it’s no respite for the not-so-awesome, and it is this social media

platforms which are a source of isolation and depression.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

I think the ending ultimately shows the freedom of being an honest, genuine person. The

main thing the episode was trying to get at was how when people interact; they’re so obsessed with

how they’re perceived. So much so that they’re willing to put on a whole facade for the sake of

acceptance, likes a high rating, etc. But it’s all because, that’s not them, it’s just what they’ve scalped

and presented to the world. The ending ultimately shows that people are more than a number; those

two were put there because of who they were: Real People. The world might look down on them,

but it doesn’t matter, because you can achieve everything you want in life by just being yourself.

The girls wedding, as pretty as it was, it was all based on fakeness. The two in the jail was way

more beautiful and impactful because even though the setting (prison) is terrible, their interaction

was based on a genuine connection. They didn’t look at each other as just numbers but as human

beings. Also, itís interesting to analyze the speech patterns of the characters in the show. They

speak almost like they’re texting or commenting on a picture. It’s incredibly strange and worrying.

How Social Media Affect Our Social Life

You can even dive deeper and notice how certain hand motions and smiles are sustained, almost

like emoji. I thought this episode was very well done.

The rate at which social media is taking total control over our lives is alarming. People are

becoming increasingly obsessed with their image on social media than they are with their moral

behavior. Just like in the series, the black mirror, people in the society are giving too much value

to the rewards such as comments, likes, and messages that they receive ion social media. People

are competing against each other for a higher number of likes, and some people are already earning

from their talent for collecting likes. The series is raising awareness in people about how they

interact with media, communication, culture, and technology as well as how our obsessions and

behaviors today might extend the occurrences in the future.

When Things Go Viral Essay Assignment

When Things Go Viral
When Things Go Viral

When Things Go Viral

One objective of this course is to go beyond individual platforms to identify and discuss societal and cultural patterns in social media use. One way to understand patterns in human behavior is to take something specific but common in social media and try to look at it in a new way. You previously looked at selfies; for this assignment, you will look more carefully at how something changes as it goes viral.

First, read “Recontextualizing YouTube” located at Blackboard. The author analyzed variations of a Soulja Boy video. As the video went viral, other people began creating derivative videos containing variations on the original. These variations “recontextualized” the video in ways that it somewhat resembled the video yet took on new characteristics. For this assignment, choose an image, video or meme and analyze it for evidence of re-contextualization.

Your report should have the following:

1) Background – what is the item you chose? Where did this item originate? How and why did you choose your item and its derivatives?

2) Summary of your findings– How do derivative versions resemble the original – or not? Include in your report a table similar to Table 1 in the article

3) Comparison of your findings to the authors’ findings

4) Describe potential applications of analyzing digital media – what could the changes from the original item say about the people making their own derivatives? Why might analyzing viral creations of digital media be useful now or in the future? What information can viral social media tell us? What information can viral social media not tell us?
