Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring a variety of texts that deal with issues of morality, justice, and the roles of individuals and groups in negotiating their places and rights in the larger society. The literary works may seem especially grim or disturbing, but it is not necessarily their aim to just bum you out! Rather, think of the works we have read as thought experiments designed to prompt you to think–perhaps to question and evaluate how societies sustain themselves–for whose benefit and at whose expense? Your task in this essay is to analyze one of the literary works we have read in light of either Didion’s “On Morality” OR MLK Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” This technique of combining texts to find meaningful connections and reach a deeper, more informed perspective of both is often called “synthesis.” You will not necessarily be comparing or contrasting, nor will you simply be summarizing each text, but rather think of your essay as answering the question, “What is the relationship between two texts?” or “How do we benefit from reading one text in light of the other?” Or, “What insights can be gained from using one text as a ‘theoretical framework’ for another?” A theoretical framework, by the way, is just another way of referring to a “lens” through which we approach another text or topic. For instance, if someone has a particular background, nationality, religion, or political bent, that person may approach issues and reading material with that perspective in mind. For this essay, you will temporarily adopt the “lens” as it is expressed in either the Didion, or King texts we have read, and apply it to one of the works of literature to see how each text engages the other.
First, pick ONE literary work from this list:

Then start answering this question: How does (literary work you chose) either demonstrate or contradict a principle or idea expressed in Joan Didion’s “On Morality,” Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”? Think about what the key ideas are in Didion or King. Look back on your response paragraphs for ideas (yes, you may recycle material from these as long as they are your own), and gather key quotations that you may be able to use (you will need to summarize, quote, and paraphrase authors’ ideas in this essay). Then, think about how they may relate to concepts or ideas implied by one of the pieces of literature. As always, you need to focus on what each text is DOING or DEMONSTRATING to its readers–in either a direct or indirect way–and how this idea relates to Didion or King either by affirming or contradicting one of their claims. When you have a key relationship in mind, construct a tentative thesis statement and scratch outline to help you plan the content of your essay.

Structure of the essay:

• Intro paragraph that introduces the text(s) and describes what it is DOING using action verbs; a thesis statement that articulates a claim about the text(s) and answers one of the prompt questions.
• 2-4 body paragraphs (with topic sentences) that focus on specific aspects of the text(s) in support of the thesis. You should provide some quoted and/or paraphrased material (properly integrated, cited, and analyzed) to illustrate your points.
• A conclusion that re-emphasizes your main point and reinforces why it (or the text) is important.
• A works cited page that includes entries for each work discussed,  formatted per MLA guidelines.

A budget, also called a spending plan, can help you prioritize expenses, save for your future and stay out of debt, all which contribute to a happy and healthy life. What steps do you need to take to set up a budget?

Create a realistic spending plan by listing your expenses, which are all your costs. To figure out what you actually spend, you have to track it — sometimes, it’s easy to forget or overlook spending — but all those little expenses add up. For one week, write down what you spend your money on, right to the last penny.

Identify your income. Income is all money coming in from allowances, part-time jobs or birthday money. It’s important to have a clear picture of the money you earn. Include all income for this week.
Plan for your expenses into two categories: fixed or variable. Fixed expenses are always the same (e.g. cellular phone plan), while variable expenses are those you have more control over such as entertainment, magazines or extracurricular activities.

Set aside 10% of what you earn for savings. For example, if you have a $1.00 in your pocket, set aside 10 cents for savings. This counts as an expense — you are “paying” yourself and the money is not available for you to spend on other things!
Ensure that you balance your budget and do not let expenses exceed income

Part 1: Prepare a simple personal budget using a spreadsheet. Alternatively, you can make up your own chart, and do the calculations manually for this assignment.

List what you earn (allowance, part-time work, odd jobs, cash gifts) for one week.

List what you spend and how (e.g. entertainment, snacks, gifts, games, hobbies?) for one week.
Put aside at least 10% into savings (this counts as an expense). Include a balance (income minus expenses).

Alternative option: Don’t currently have an income or expenses? Look to the future. Imagine: You have earned $100 through your first week of part-time work (or $400 for the month). What would you spend your money on? What would you put aside for savings?

Think about things you might spend money on in the future: bus fare, gifts, cell phone, food, snacks, hobbies, entertainment, clothing, saving for a trip or car, gifts, etc. — and include in your budget. Make sure your budget balances.

Part 2: Reflective response – are you living within your means? Explain why or why not. How could you improve your budget and spending habits? Complete this below your spreadsheet.

One of the most important things about theology is that it should not become locked in an ivory tower, hidden away from those without academic training. The focus of this project will be helping communicate key theological ideas to those who do not understand them or see their relevance to daily life. You have the option to pursue this goal through one of two modes: you will EITHER
a) help prepare a group video that will the classical loci of theology (salvation) to those in the church, OR
b) prepare a series of application insights explaining the classical loci of salvation to those in the church.
Whether you are doing a) or b), you will start with a paper (part 1) and then do your choice (part 2).

Basic Requirements/Information:
– Each of you will a two-part project:
o Part 1. a 1500 word paper summarizing the theological topic AND
o Part 2. EITHER a video OR a 1500 word application paper.
– This Project is worth 180 points.

PART 1 ~ Paper:
Before preparing the video or application project, you will each individually prepare a ~1500 word summary of the key ideas about topic of theology (salvation) you focus on in Part 2 of the project, with sections explaining, among other things:
1) what are the main ideas and biblical verses that inform this area of theology, and
2) how the idea of the Trinity informs the topic.

Notes:
• This is an academic paper so you should have citations to at least 4 academic sources (contemporary and historical—patristic, medieval, reformation). I highly recommend consulting key sources like Treier and Elwell, eds., Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, 3rd ed. (Baker 2017), as well as the course textbooks.
• You should follow the SBL/Chicago/Turabian style guidelines and include a bibliography.
• Don’t just explain the video or your application project, give a short paper about the theological topic.

PART 2 ~ Video/Application
While the first part of the project is an individual paper, you have the option in part 2 to participate in a group project (with the video) or an individual project (with the application).

Video Option:
You are encouraged to do this in groups of 3-4. The video should reflect these items/concerns:
• The video (posted to YouTube) should be 5-10 minutes long. Each additional minute past 10 minutes will lose 10 points per minute.
• Your intended audience is expected to have only minimal understanding of basic Christian ideas.
• The “essentials” of the area should be clear, though you can focus on an important aspect of the overall topic, addressing the non-essentials or heterodox views.
• The video should address why this topic is important and how it relates to the life of the church and to the world at large.
• The video should be interesting (not merely a lecture, as if you are repeating the lecture notes). To this end, you may integrate other video clips, though external content should not dominate and you should be aware of copyright issues.
• IDEAS: Interviews of Christians/non-Christians, animation with voice-over (e.g., PowToon), rap battle, slam poetry, subtitled parody using a foreign film clip, etc.

If you choose the video project, at the end of your paper you should assess the work of the other members of your group by assigning them an A, B, etc. according to their effort of participation in the video.

Application Option:
You will individually prepare a ~1500 word description of what it looks like to live out the reality of that doctrine, in addition to the part 1 paper. If you choose the application project, the total length will therefore be about 3000 words: Part 1 Paper (1500) + Part 2 Application (1500). The Part 2 write-up should have two sections:
1) You should develop at least 4 substantive examples of what it would look to live out that doctrine practically, so each practice should be about 250 words each. You should have at least one individual and at least one corporate practice. (Don’t ignore biblical and Trinitarian ideas.)
2) You should describe how you personally engaged in some of the practices that you described and how that helped you understand the doctrine which you were engaging. A minimum of 3 weeks of personal practice is necessary. While you will write the paper individually, you are especially encouraged experiment with these practices in groups (groups of students, in your local church, etc.).
