Spiritual discipline is imperative for any Christian with a strong quest to live a fulfilling godly lifestyle and achieve the optimum outcome from his faith. It has been part of my weekly practice to adhere to a spiritual discipline plan for the aim of inculcating a consistent godly lifestyle and avoiding all manner of temptations. This study provides a brief evaluation of the achievements I attained while implementing the plan, how I overcame temptations and the plan I shall use for the next twelve months.

Spiritual Discipline Evaluation 

In the entire week, while implementing the spiritual discipline plan, I came to realize the importance of having a consistent personal relationship with God. Spiritual discipline highlighted to me the beauty of staying attached to the creator of all and learning many things that the Holy Spirit has to offer to all that are thirsty for Him. My spiritual discipline plan entailed two activities, which were journaling and a scripture taking. Each day I allocated an hour of prayer and reading the Word every morning and evening with a quest of making it my personal habit. It was difficult to adhere to the schedule as I was used to the normal routine of waking up and preparing for other activities.

Putting God first ahead of my daily activities has made me realize that I achieve more because He goes ahead of me. In scripture taking, I came across a verse granting the ownership of day and night to Him;[1] therefore, His importance in leading us every day is unquestionable. I allowed the Holy Spirit to lead me through scripture taking, which enabled me to have a satisfying devotion every day. Although I managed to accomplish the devotions almost daily, some days I slept late and woke up very late making it difficult to have a conducive session. I was able to achieve covering up to nine chapters of the scriptures per day, only skipping devotion on average twice a week. I spent a considerable amount of time, sharing the scripture with my neighbors and friends during the weekend and in our cell group, which exposed me to more revelations from other brethren. I would make it clear that it was not smooth sailing as exhaustion sometimes made it difficult to attain these goals but God enabled me to achieve them.

I also managed to do journaling every day. Journaling is an activity I personally saw as important since it allowed me to quickly capture insights developed whenever I read the scripture or reflected on the doings of the Lord in my life. Personal reflections and meditations especially after my devotions helped me to grow a deep understanding of the purposes of God in my life. Every day I sought to record at least five things that I consider a blessing in my life. This helped me to identify what I had taken for granted in my life that God was doing. It is surely surprising to know what the Lord has done by counting one’s blessings one by one. Implementing the first plan was difficult because of the lack of personal training into being consistent in implementing the plan. However, it became easier to implement the plan on a daily basis by developing some discipline in avoiding distractions that would rob me time in the evenings and morning. Some of these activities included staying out late, sleeping late, oversleeping, and watching television until late.

The ability to overcome temptations is an important step in achieving long-term goals in life, whether spiritually, academically, economically, or socially.[2] Lack of self-control is a major setback in establishing a thriving spiritual life that is both fulfilling and successful in the pursuit of godliness. The Bible is clear that temptations that come upon people are due to the evil that are accustomed to them.[3] It is however important to undergo trials as it helps to build perseverance in the life of a Christian. The main temptations I identified before the beginning of my plan was the use of electronics and the social media. I realized I was spending a considerable amount of time watching television and chatting on social media sites. This was detrimental to my spiritual walk and especially being consistent in my devotions and prayer.

During the implementation of my plan, I learnt how to allocate time for my evening and morning devotions by, reducing the time I was using to watch television and accessing social media sites. I placed a lot of priority on my devotions especially in the evening by deciding to do my devotions early before doing other things. Social media can also provide a lot of temptation to a Christian, so I limited the time taken to use the sites. Additionally, I decided to use the sites to promote spiritual matters by sharing Bible verses and evangelism.

I developed the need to draw satisfaction from the social media by interacting with friends and catching up with people I have not met for a long time. Using sites like facebook, whatsapp, and twitter provides a window into getting information concerning what is happening in the society and people’s views concerning them. However, the devotion plan helped in making me understand the importance of allocating time to build a relationship with God. Although there was some great tendency to veer off the quest to remain spiritual, adhering to the spiritual discipline plan made it easier to overcome temptations. However, I can also say that the Holy Spirit helped me a lot in realizing this goal as it is not by my strength that I was able to accomplish this. I also drew a lesson from the Bible, which states that we should draw closer to God in order to overcome the temptations that the devil throws at us.[4]

Spiritual Discipline Plan

Reading the scriptures and prayers constitute a very important part of personal devotion. In my devotions, I have learnt to create notes on what I have learnt, and this has helped me in developing personal insight on what the Spirit communicates to me on a daily basis.  In my new plan for the next six-month or so, I would like to share with people more about these insights in order to spread the word of God. I have desired to be active in evangelism so that I may lead other people to Christ and help them change their lives.

In order to undertake this new plan, I would like to get involved with some brethren in the church who are consistent in evangelism and become part of them. I believe by surrounding myself with people who have the heart for the lost will enable me to reach out to more people with the message of truth and helping them in their daily struggle through sharing of a message of hope. I also need to study the Bible more and my plan shall not rely on my daily devotions but by taking part in Bible studies with my church’s cell group members.

In the next month going forward, I shall aim to lead at least one person to Christ every month, while taking part in church activities that optimally capitalizes on my faith and ability. Having a great intimacy with God can overflow into a personal action and lead to someone reaching out to others as an expression of this intimacy.[5] I believe by putting action into my faith, I shall not only be alive to the working of God in my life but also to hearing from Him even more.

Nevertheless, it is essential for Christians to practice the spiritual disciplines daily in order to live a strong Christian divine life and spiritually mature. Furthermore, there is no other way a Christian can always live closer to God, prevail over the pressure of the World we live in, be receptive to the Holy Spirit and daily live the divine life that God needs every individual to live other than firmly following the spiritual disciplines.[1]

Spiritual disciplines being essential in my godliness pursuit I plan to incorporate two spiritual disciplines into my daily life. The spiritual disciplines that I desire to integrate include journaling and scripture intake. Moreover, I would create a plan that would facilitate incorporation of these disciplines into my life in order to build the spiritual disciplines into routine practice in my life as I pursue godliness.[2]

Journaling is one of the most valuable spiritual disciplines that a Christian can carry out. The discipline involves recording personal insights and reflections of what God is doing to you. This discipline of writing my personal meditations and reflections for preservation and consideration will assist in my endeavor of pursuing godliness as well as building my spirituality. My plan of incorporating journaling in my daily life includes keeping track of the blessings that God has granted to me over the years and currently. Conversely, scripture intake is essential in individual spiritual growth since without scripture reading it is hard for a Christian to develop an understanding of God and draw closer to Him. Therefore, in order to include the spiritual discipline as a routine practice in my life, I would spend a quiet moment each day unhurriedly reading, absorbing, and reflecting on the words of the scripture and letting the Holy Spirit communicate to me through my perception. Moreover, I would attend more Bible study sessions during the weekends to get an opportunity of discussing, sharing, and reflecting the scripture with other church members.[4]

Battling temptations is a crucial component of each Christian since they often face temptations on a daily basis. The temptations that I regularly face and strive to overcome include overuse of electronic and social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, television, and video games. The social media provides a cool medium to connect with new friends and people around us who we have not spoken to in several years. Conversely, watching television enable people to be aware of what is happening in other parts of the world. Connecting with friends through social media and watching television is a valuable thing, but the problem is because I spent a lot of time on them rather than applying the spiritual disciplines in my life. The common causes that lead me to the overuse of social media include the satisfaction that I get after connecting with friends and the need to be up to date on what is happening or trending in the social world. Nevertheless, I have identified some ways that would assist me to overcome these temptations. Since I have decided to utilize some evening hours applying the journaling and scripture intake spiritual disciplines, I will only connect with friends on social media and watch television after I have completed exercising my spiritual disciplines. Furthermore, I will try to limit the time I use on social media so that I can get time to apply other spiritual disciplines including a prayer that will facilitate my spiritual growth and my holiness pursuit.[5]

Guarding against blind spots is an important component to Christians since through building the fences individuals are able to protect themselves from falling into future temptation. In my case, I plan to build a fence of being flexible and effortless on unleashing practices and inhibitions that have an influence on my spiritual life. The blind spot of stubborn resistance has had a significant influence on my divine life as well as my godliness pursuit. Furthermore, the blind spot was responsible for aggravating several things in my life and hurting those around me. Flexibility and easiness on unleashing practices and inhibitions would be the ideal fence of protecting me from falling into the same temptation in the future. The fence will help me to be open-minded and consider that I have a problem, which would be a noteworthy step towards guarding against future blind spots and temptations.[6]

On the other hand, in order to protect myself from temptations of not exercising my spiritual disciplines, I would create a proper fence of not going to sleep before I have completed the journaling and scripture intake disciplines. This moral fence will be vital in ensuring that I overcome any temptation of not exercising my spiritual disciplines.[7]

The patient believes in fasting and prayers. She says that each time she prays about a situation, God answers her prayers according to His will. She says prayers and fasting brings her closer to God.

While she has issues with stem cell research, euthanasia and abortion perspectives of healthcare; she always seeks medication when she gets ill. Part II: Analysis 

This assessment was conducted at the healthcare facility. The participant is a client of 45 years old African American female, who presented to the hospital with complaints of chest pains and shortness of breath. This assessment is important as it integrates spirituality in healing, thereby developing a holistic healing environment.

The patient is married and lives with her two daughters (age 18 and 16years) and her husband in a nearby suburb. The patient is very religious and from the assessment, it is evident that she actively participates in church activities. The interview flow was smooth due to good interpersonal communication skills.  However, the patient expressed her thoughts symbolically and would make references to the scriptures describing her values and believes.  The symbolic answers were explored further using open ended questions in order to avoid misunderstanding of the patient’s religion beliefs (Russell, 2013).

The main barriers experienced during this interview were inadequate time, which made it difficult to enquire more about the patient spirituality. I also realized that my approach towards her beliefs was invasive and opinionated; which seemed to bother the patient.  This is a weakness that needs to be improved through additional training and practice.  This can be attributed to the organization culture that fails to integrate the concept of spirituality in healing.  Following this course, I now understand the value of spirituality in establishing a healing environment. I intend to integrate patient’s spiritual beliefs in my future practice in order to promote holistic care (Gallison, Xu, Jurgens,  and Boyle, 2013).

This exercise improved my nursing knowledge, particularly in when confronted by ethical dilemmas associated with patient’s beliefs.  Using the HOPE spiritual assessment tool (Probst, 2014), I managed to create a mutual relationship with my patient; who made it easy for the patient to express their views and thoughts regarding her ailment. For instance, the patient believed that she became sick for refusing to do God’s work (not going for a three day mission).  This explains the high level of anxiety which was managed through laying of hands by her pastor.

The officer and woman exchange text messages about who is assaulting her and where she is located until the ex-husband flees. The woman is unable to appear at trial and the defendant moves to suppress the “statements” at his trial for felony violation of the no-contact order.

-Given the above facts, and using the Court’s rationale for distinguishing “testimonial” and “non-testimonial” statements, state whether the text message and photograph should be admitted as evidence at trial and why.

While the appellant did not attend the trial, she was able to transmit a photograph and some text, which in any case does not warrant to be used as evidence against the defendant. However, it was presented as evidence of the linkages between the appellant and her ex-husband.  The scripture states that one person cannot be used as sufficient evidence to criminalize a person’s wrongdoing. Instead, Deuteronomy 19:15 asserts that at least two witnesses can provide sufficient evidence against a case in a court of law (Jonakait, 2005).

The defendant can dismiss the litigant’s claim asserting that presenting a photograph and text without affording him the opportunity to cross-examine the defendant violates his Sixth Amendment right to challenge the plaintiff as defined by the U.S. Supreme Court in Adrian Martell Davis v. Washington.  In this circumstance, the court can dismiss the case arguing that the photograph and text cannot be used as testimony. In short, the Confrontation Clause of the 6th Amendment does not approve non-testimonial statements and does not, therefore, qualify to be used as evidence at trial. The photograph and the text provided to 911 were intended to help the police determine an ongoing emergency, as opposed to being used as testimony to a past crime (Lininger, 2005).

The bench can, therefore, uphold the view that under this backdrop, the content cannot act as testimony.  While her not appearing at trial was warranted by the Sixth Amendment, the content was insufficient to prosecute the defendant because the motives may be crooked. The photograph and text were prohibited. The Adrian Martell Davis v. Washington altered hostility analysis. Its existing effect was immediate and substantial in the justice system on the evidence termed as irrelevant (Raeder, 2007).
