Question 1: 150 words
Jan, one of the Aboriginal elders in the TV program, described education for their children as something they would fight for. Despite entrenched problems
with absenteeism and low academic outcomes they expected that their children would go onto finish year 11 and 12 and further studies.

Developing programs to improve Aboriginal children?s participation rates at school may seem to be unrelated to health and health promotion.

However, a person’s level of education is known to influence health outcomes and, as such, education is considered a social determinant of health.
With reference to the ‘Menindee method’ project profiled in the TV program explain the role of education as a determinant of health.

Question 2: 200 words
In the TV program Jan also stated that ?We do not expect anything less for our kids just because we?re in a remote country town.? Living in a remote location is known to contribute to inequity of access to health and other services.

Identify factors associated with living in remote areas of Australia which may contribute to inequity of access to health and other services and discuss how
they may impact on health outcomes for school age children and their families. In your answer you should discuss the relevant principles of PHC and refer to appropriate examples from the TV program to support your discussion.

Question 3: 200 words
The reporter in the TV program commented that a ?social network focused on the Menindee Central School? had been created. This type of intersectoral
collaboration is essential to the success of primary health care interventions aimed at preventing and resolving health-related problems and promoting
health.

Discuss intersectoral collaboration in the context of PHC and explain how intersectoral collaboration was used to promote the health of the Aboriginal
students at Menindee Central School (in the TV program), their families and the community.

Question 4: 200 words
In the TV program an aboriginal elder from ?The Firm? explained that a lot of government polices don?t suit particular communities and that they advocated for ?local solutions to local problems.? This approach reflects the primary health care principle of community participation, whereby individuals and community groups are valued for their local knowledge and assisted to participate in decision making processes that affect them.
Identify examples from the TV program that exemplify this ?local solutions to local problems? approach.

Using these examples, explain how community participation can be used as a strategy for promoting health.

Question 5: Poster
The TV program describes a cultural exchange program that is operating in the Menindee Central School, where the students get to meet students from other cultures, including students from China, Japan, Cambodia and also Sydney. Such cultural exchange programs foster the development of cultural sensitivity which is an important principle in PHC.
Imagine you are on your clinical placement in a community health centre. Your facilitator has asked you to create a poster which conveys the values of
cultural sensitivity within a PHC framework. The poster will be used to teach cultural sensitivity in preparation for cultural exchange program between
students at Menindee Central School and a visiting group of students from a High School in.

Social media Film Review Essay Paper

Social media
Social media

Social media, simulation and consumption Science and technology (including media, transportation and other technologies present in the film)

Write a 4-5 page paper (double spaced) using Assignment 3 as raw material for an analysis of The World, interpreting the film according to one or a mix of these two sets of themes:

  • Social media, simulation and consumption
  • Science and technology (including media, transportation and other technologies present in the film)

Use vocabulary from Chapters 7-10 and lectures.
1. Begin with a THESIS. Hypothetical example (note: do not use this thesis in your own paper—this is an example):
“I aim to show how the film The World (Jia Zhang-ke, 2014) are constructed as consumer citizens.” Then you would have to mean what you mean by consumer citizens, and cite some sources from reading about it (Banet-Weiser, the textbook), keeping in mind her concept was written to describe North Americans not Chinese subjects. This
should take you to the end of page one or the middle of page 2.
2. Explain how the film overall functions in terms of your thesis.
Example following from above: “Throughout the film, characters engage in consumption …. {Explain in 2 or 3 paragraphs how the film plot as a whole relates to the thesis, and different places in the film where neoliberal consumer values are expressed.} This should take about a page.
3. Do a close analysis of your scene to develop and support your thesis. “The scene in which such and such happens is a useful one from which to demonstrate the film’s expression of neoliberal consumer values. In the first shot of the sequence, we see so and so walking in a residential area hallway surrounded by her co-workers; she is carrying a bag…. [go forward and further describe and analyze, saying what these elements and relationships mean}” This should take about 2-3 pages.
4. Tie the scene, with its new meanings that you have shown by drawing from details in your analysis of the sequence, back into the film as a whole. This should take a half to a third page or so.
5. Conclude with a synopsis or statement about the broader implications of your thesis for the film as a whole. This can be a paragraph, or longer.
6. Include a bibliography or use footnotes. Any standard citations style is fine. If you go to 5.5 pages that is okay.

The rise and fall of the Soviet Union

The rise and fall of the Soviet Union
The rise and fall of the Soviet Union

The rise and fall of the Soviet Union

In late February, March, and early April we will spend much of our time discussing the ideas developed by Acemoglu and Robinson in their book, Why Nations
Fail. This book is extremely wide ranging, covering human events from 11,000 years ago to the present day. Acemoglu and Robinson analyze and discuss many, many interesting and important historical episodes. These include

  •  the end of the Roman Republic in the first century B.C.,
  •  the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century,
  • the Black Death, which killed a huge fraction of the population of Europe in the late 1340s,
  •  the expansion of trade between Europe and the Americas in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries,
  • the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which established that the English King was subordinate to Parliament,
  •  the Meiji Restoration of 1868, which put Japan on the path to economic development,
  • the rise and fall of the Soviet Union,
  • the Civil Rights era in the southern United States,
  • the economic rebirth of China after 1978,
    and many more.

I would like you to write a short paper, commenting on one (or a few) of the events which receive prominent attention in the book. The idea of the paper is to identify an event, or a set of events, and describe why those events are important, and how they contributed to subsequent economic and political development. You should connect the event(s) that you have chosen with the broader themes of the Acemoglu-Robinson book.

You may choose from the list above, or you may choose from among the many other episodes covered by Acemoglu and Robinson. In class, I will try to provide some perspective on Acemoglu and Robinson, and you may incorporate the ideas discussed in class into your paper. And, of course, you may also do your own research.

You may quote from Acemoglu and Robinson, and from other sources, but it is best not to use lengthy quotes. I would like you to develop your own ideas, and not merely to string together a series of quotes.
