Introduction

In the 21st Century, the term globalization is finding more roots as it directly affects the future. There are many aspects of globalization. However, this paper will zero in on the three main types that have been of vital significance in this era. These types include the political, cultural and economic aspects of globalization. In the 20th and 21st century, there has been a rise in global issues that have turned the world into a small global community. These factors range from the encroachment of global cultures to international business platforms, the doors that open up for nations to link with others and so on and forth.

Out of the confusions and chaos that are arising in remaining relevant with the current trends brought by globalization, globalization still stands at the forefront of global issues (Vadlamannati, 2015). Nations have been affected by the wave of globalization, a factor that has turned into a globalization issue. This paper, therefore, seeks to by sect these global issues by ascertaining the various types of globalization and identifying their impacts. It will also be imperative to determine if globalization is beneficial or not.

Background

The pace at which globalization is finding root in the contemporary society is becoming more rapid from time to time. Those who are trained to analyze and track it tend to experience difficulties in keeping up with the new impacts and effects of globalization. It is imperative to clearly understand that humanities lives are influenced transcendently with forces that have crossed boarders, which because of their power to influence and scope are changing the life on this planet.

In as much as all levels of the society are being shaped by this process, is this change positive, negative or marginal? In the wake of globalization, individuals are likely to find themselves or their livelihood threatened or their identity overthrown, regions have the option to either recreate themselves or die, and nations are experiencing instances of steady decrease in freedom as a result of globalization (Vadlamannati, 2015). This in itself is a global issue.

Literature Review

According to Vadlamannati, 2015 globalization cannot be analyzed or addressed without viewing its types and the various impacts they have on the economy of the world. In his opinion, it is proper to justify that some types of globalization may produce beneficial results to a particular region in the world while another time may not actually benefit the same region.

In Vadlamannatis view globalization is used to designate the power relations, technologies and practices that typify and bring into being the contemporary world. He, therefore, defines globalization as a tool that helps present the world today. However, some ideologies argue at the manner at which globalization has helped resolve the world. Some of the ideologies tend to hold that globalization has destructed the national heritage and cultures of societies.

Contradictions are rising steadily challenging the concepts of globalization. Vadlamannati, undermines the position that globalization is a full swing and that its existing presence has the power, authority and scope to direct countries towards a beneficial state. In his view, he asserts that globalization is a malady that disrupts in its inequitable effects. Globalization has posed immense challenges for institutions while also weakening the support and autonomy for those it excludes economically or culturally. In challenging these views, analysts have attempted to clarify the aspects of globalization that have the potential to generate social conflicts and unrest. By this, they have designed a human need theory that was developed by John Burton to explore and mitigate this conflicts that arise.

Critiques have also argued in support of Vadlamannati view that globalization in as much as has been seen as the height to economic rationality, also portrays its dark sides. They allege that the contemporary form of globalization that is driven by economic power has been the promoter of Western culture and corporations thus putting societies and jobs in poor countries at risk by exploiting cheap labor. Globalization according to these critics has also degraded the environment and undermined the developments of democracy and social stability by exposing institutions to forces of economic changes that tend to be beyond their control. In their view, globalization is uneven both in its effects and processes.

Types of Globalization

Economic Globalization

This form of globalization has led to economic developments and integrations of countries by introducing approaches such as free trade and foreign investments among others, with the aim of making the world a global village. It comprises of production, technology, competition, corporation, and industries. The positive effects of globalization include the provision of employment that have increased the living standards of various communities. Access to new markets is also another contribution of the economic globalization.

Fair trade methods have been established among countries thus giving a country the chance for home grown corporations to venture and compete in international markets.

However on the other side, economic globalization has significantly widened the income gaps between the poor and the rich to a great extent (Vadlamannati, 2015). These have brewed a new issue in the increase in poverty levels that has resulted from the difference in incomes between countries. The growing inequality in the world may also be ascribed to economic globalization a factor that has led to inequality between the rich and the poor in the world. The losers of economic globalization remain to be the developing economies who in most instances open doors for economic developments at the expense of their environment.

Political Globalization

Political globalization is also another form of globalization that has led to the creation of a world government that regulates the relations between states. Globalization of this kind also guarantees the rights that arise from economic and social globalization. Multinational corporations have been instrumental in keeping nations in check (Vadlamannati, 2015).

This has seen the enactment of issues related to human rights from the international governments. International peace has also been maintained as are result of this form of globalization. Despite these governments have lost autonomy and are now faced with dangers such as increase in cases of polarization of wealth, worldwide corruption and curtail scandals, and lastly the capital transnational corporations have turned out more influential than any government.

Cultural Globalization

Cultural globalization is the leading cause of loss of national cultures and heritage. The world has become a melting point, and every society is Americanized as a result of cultural globalization. Culture is a tool that applies to the global context in which it has emerged. It formulates the configuration of different ethnic groups, cultures, or races depending on the period of history (Vadlamannati, 2015). When the process of acculturation occurs, different cultures merge thus some of the features of a culture are adopted while the group remains extinct.

Conclusion

Having analyzed all this factors, it is imperative to sum up this dissertation by indicating the fact that there is no distinct positive or negative answer on globalization. Globalization should be understood on the context that it can be beneficial to some countries, people and organization to some magnitude but its harmful effects can still be depicted in various ways. A balanced approach in understanding and incorporating globalization is advisable to any country that seeks its benefits.

Communication takes various forms and having the knowledge and skills to use these forms enhances how an individual communicates.  Authors employ different literary skills to communicate their messages to different kinds of audiences. This discussion focuses on how Alison uses literary references to connect with her readers and understand who she is.

An author writes with the intention of passing a certain message or information to the specific audience. This information is, therefore, the motivation to write and share one’s opinions, experiences and ideas. In this story, Alison employs different literary styles to convey her messages to the audience/readers. One of the widely used styles is a reference to authors, books, movies, and poems.  Alison uses a number of authors, books, and poems to reinforce her messages. The books she refers to relates to the experiences she faces. Some of the books as well contributed to her quest to become a lesbian.  It is the change in mind after reading these books that compelled or triggered her to aspire to learn more about lesbianism. The interest increased at a tremendous rate and without knowing, she found herself already practicing lesbianism.

She as well uses various authors of the books such as Fitzgerald to provide an insight into the life of her father. The author had written a lot on her personal life and Alison father used to love reading his book. Alison as well uses other books such as ‘Washington Square’ written by James to provide insights on the early life of her mother. The mother while in college she was the lead actress in the play ‘Heiress’. Therefore, through these authors and books, Alison manages to give the reader a clear picture of her parents’ life, how they ended up meeting and getting married. This life history is connected to her own life growing up and finally becoming a lesbian.

Alison furthermore, is able to connect wither readers through her use of first-person narration together with direct quotes.  Audiences can move with the author through the narration and the direct quotes that she employs. She manages to stimulate the emotions of the readers through the narrations something that makes the story interesting to follow as one reads. Furthermore, Alison uses these acts of literacy in different ways to express how she came to understand who she was.  The upbringing of Alison whereby she spent more time reading books contributed to her becoming a lesbian. The first instance she learned about the word lesbian is unraveled as through reading a dictionary.  Reading the meaning of the word in dictionary made her develop more interest in the same word leading her to continue doing research and reading any materials that could give her more information about the word. This behavior dragged her into a lesbian and she could not turn back.

Therefore, Alison behavior was solely contributed to the various books and encounter with various authors that delved on lesbianism and issues to do with love. It is, therefore, apparent that indeed, the author –Alison has employed precisely literacy devices more so authors and books to enhance understanding of Alison behaviors. The story is captivating and interesting to follow as it explores or provides an opportunity to understand the various dynamics of life Alisha faced to what she is now.

Communicating with older adult patients can be a challenging encounter due to various factors such as the risk of effects of memory decline and age-related sensory impairment. In addition, a third party can become part of the interaction, since elderly patients tend to be in the company of a loved one who participates actively in the patient`s care and visits. Older patients present with sophisticated problems and various other chief complaints that may require time to unravel. Another factor to consider is that old aged patients have few inquiries and are also likely to defer the authority of the physician. Ageism is also another factor that must be considered to avoid poor communication (Cooper and Gosnell, 2015).

Establishing a good rapport is relevant in effective communication with older adult patients. This can be achieved by showing respect to the patient as well as a sign of concern for the patient. The patient can be addressed as “Mr.” or “Mrs” unless he or she has requested to be called by the name of choice. Names such as “honey,” “sweetie,” or “dear,” should be avoided. Eye contact should be maintained at all times by sitting a chair and facing the patient directly. These acts aid in demonstration of genuine interest as well as active listening. Justice refers to fairness in decision making processes and the way people are treated. It emphasizes on equal disbursement of burden and advantages. In health care, social justice is a twin moral concept which involves improving health by focusing needs of the most underprivileged. Social justice is the integral part of ensuring that good health is provided to everyone through identification of patterns of disadvantage individuals whose access to health prospects is limited. Therefore, social justice in public health could be elaborated in two aspects; health improvement of the underprivileged population; and fair treatment to the unfortunate communities. The main principles of social justice include; Access– To ensure that equitable health care is provided to all people, health infrastructures must be established. For a contract to be binding, there has to be an offer, communication of the offer and acceptance which should be unconditional and in a manner requested by the offeror. Conditional acceptance or cross offers makes the offer voidable at the option of the offeror (McKendrick, 2011). The offer has to be communicated to the offeree as in the case of Gibson v Manchester City Council (1979).

Contractual Capacity

It’s the ability to contract or as in the case Nash v Inman (1908) 2 KB 1, minors without contractual capacity can be allowed to contract but only for reasonable necessaries. Minors,’ incompetent persons such as persons of unsound minds and intoxicated persons have limited contractual ability (Poole, 2012). For a contract to be binding both parties must have the intention of creating a legally binding agreement between themselves (Beale, 2007). Unenforceable contracts are contracts that have no intention of creating legally binding relationships like a gentlemen promise to buy a gift for a wife. They also have no consideration.

The subject of the contracts must be legal. Contracts that are illegal are not binding and cannot be enforced (Brownsword, 2010).

Illegal contracts are contracts that lack one or more of the elements of a valid contract. Contracts without proper offer and acceptance that’s acceptable are void.

Contracts must also be capable of performance while implied contracts are contracts that are acceptable by the conduct of the parties. For example, when ordering a vehicle there’s an implied contract that on payment of a certain of money, the driver will provide transport services to that destination. By paying the stated amounted amount the passenger has accepted the contract and performed his part of the contract and it’s the duty of driver to transport him to his destination as the contract has been sealed by the passenger (McKendrick, 2012).

A unilateral contract is a promise to pay in return for the actual performance by the other party. For example, one can promise a mechanic $1000 if he fixes the car by evening. Gratuitous contracts are for the benefit party to whom it has been made to without any consideration.

Informal or Parol contracts are simple contracts and they are not under seal or record. They may be oral or in writing. All the contracts under seal must be written. Formal contracts are contracts that are on record and under seal

The first step of countering this scenario is recognizing that people from different cultural backgrounds are different in all aspects. They have a special way of viewing things, a different code of dressing and a different personality.

The root/ cause of miscommunication between different nationalities is the context of communication. Cultural diversity has divided communication context in to two; high and low communication contexts. Some cultures are into a high communication context while others are used to low context. In high context communication, information is either internalized in the person or it’s physical. Behaviors are implicit, meaning that the context gives you cues on how to behave. These people tend to use a more circuitous approach of communication. Japan, china, Korea and, Latin American countries prefer the style of communication (Martin, 2009).

Verbal content communication is most evident in low context cultures. Information is wholly conveyed through word of mouth from one agent to another. On the other hands some cultures prefer cooperation with others. Team-building in a multiple ethnic setting can be very challenging. Effective multi-cultural team-building is mandatory. As evident in the Grand Rounds Video, communication during the emergency outbreak of SARS health threat became very critical. In this case, the audience which mostly included the media had to be constantly updated on the state of the situation and issues as they unfolded. There are several strategies of communication that I realized from the documentation. First, direct confrontation strategy was evident. As the media sought the unfolding information urgently, one of the ways used to tackle the situation was to directly confrontation by telling exactly what is on the ground to avoid suspicion and wrong perception of the public. The second strategy was being brief and precise when addressing the audience. During the crisis, leaders were strategic in delivering updates in a brief and precise manner that does not create ambiguity as everyone at that particular time was keenly following the unfolding events. The leaders were also diplomatic is communicating the information. This was a communication strategy used to avoid instances of being perceived to take sides especially by the media (U.O.N.C.C .H.G S.O G.P.H, 2009).

Honesty and accuracy in delivering the crisis information was a very important communication strategy used. Leaders made sure that any information conveyed to the public was scrutinized to avoid misleading the audience and other stakeholders during the crisis. Lastly, simplicity and supporting data was evident in the communication in order to ease the understanding of the audience and clear any doubts on the information that was being conveyed. To a considerable extend, I can clearly give credit to the manner in which these strategies were implemented because they laid out proper communication procedures and chose an eloquent speaker who could tackle various reactions and sentiments from the audience especially the media (U.O.N.C.C .H.G S.O G.P.H, 2009). However, the communication could have been made better by incorporating live coverage of all unfolding events as opposed to periodical updates to the media with partial live coverage.

I will be looking at the earthquake disaster in Haiti which saw numerous deaths, millions of people displaced and trillions of property destroyed. The situation in Haiti when this disaster occurred was quite critical and devastating. With Red Cross and its affiliates in the fore front, the rescue mission began moments after the earthquake. Millions of survivors of the disaster had to be rescued, evacuated and taken for medical attention. Looking at the communication part of it at the beginning, it was quite clear that no one had confident information to deliver to the audience due to the abrupt situation that came as a surprise. However, when everything became evident, the leaders were able to strategically apply crisis communication strategies to address the audience. For instance, they began updating the audience on the rescue mission and efforts that were being put in place to contain the situation. The leaders tried as much as possible to remain brief, concise and diplomatic in their communication.

The leaders implemented these communication tactics is a manner to create harmony, togetherness and mutual support during the time of the crisis. Allowing live coverage of events as they were unfolding was something that could have created even much tension within the country. Leaders had to take bold steps and periodically update the audience on unfolding events rather than allowing the scenes of the disaster to go live to the public (Centers for Disease Control, 2008). Since this was a disaster that needed international help, the leaders allowed the international media to make wide coverage of the events so that other countries could come in to help the situation. However, additional efforts to increase the number of rescue teams and rescue machinery could have made things much better.

We normally do not understand what contempt really is. Contempt, in legal terms, is the act of interfering with the advocated course of justice. In Australia, contempt is the deliberate attack on the status and dignity of the court systems (Phillip, 2010). Journalists in Australia are usually charged with contempt for the failure to reveal sources to their information at the court of law (Media Law Resource Center, 2013). I stand firm to argue that journalists should be charged in court with contempt. This is because it undermines the authority of the courts by endeavoring to influence participants in the proceedings, which can happen through publication or action such as physical threats to safety at extreme (Overbeck & Belmas, 2011). Failure to provide the requested information by the court is total disobedience. I would recommend that journalists should be charged with contempt if their publications tend to undermine public confidence in the administration of justice.

Several cases are evident showing certain journalists charged with contempt in Australia. Two Melbourne journalists, Gerald McManus and Michael Harvey, is one group charged with contempt in 2007 who apparently, had written an article for the Herald Sun Newspaper (Pracene, 2005). Subsequently, criminal charges were brought against Commonwealth Public Servant, who was alleged to be the source of information for the story. Both Gerald and McManus refused to give information as requested by the court, and were consequently fined $7000 each. Another case that confirms my stand on charging journalists with contempt is that of three Fairfax journalists in Supreme Court of New Wales (Riles, 2011). Justice Lucy McCallum ordered the journalist tool reveal identity of sources used to publish the story about a publication on defamation regarding a Chinese property developer, Helen Liu (Wijckmans, Tuytschaever & Vanderelst, 2006). The next area I would like to discuss is use of Shield laws in Australia and its effectiveness. Shield laws are used in shielding journalists from revealing very sensitive data to the court that can lead to the prosecution of the source of the informant (Mandiberg, 2012). Shield laws can be said to be geared to protect the freedoms of the source of first-hand information. Shield laws, on the other hand, are used to relieve journalists from personal and professional harms. It is reported that period 2001-2002, two journalists in Australia committed suicide due to unknown reasons (Karmen, 2013). Experts in journalism argue that the cause of their death may be as a result of fear of prosecution as the article they had written was sensitive. The effectiveness of the Shield laws is to electrify the freedom of journalist to protect them from being blurred enjoying some services such as visa as it was done to McManus. This enables journalists protect and retain their reputations (Jones, 2010). The Journalists Privilege under the Shield laws provides that a judge will request information about the source of data after evaluating the likely damage to the informant and the ability of the news media to access sources of facts (Willingham, 2013). Another profound effectiveness of Shield laws is that it has enabled governments to be accountable. This is by protecting the journalist from corruption-full dockets of the government that reprimand the freedoms of these journalists (In Meyers, 2010). Accountability can also be felt by the ability of a country able to come down to the common problem and address it from the roots as portrayed by journalists (Zelezny, 2011). At most, transparency and democracy is reinstated to the overall system of justice because freedoms and rights are equivalently controlled and maintained.

The third and final issue I would like to address is how modern technology and social media may cause further contempt issues for journalists. With the emergence of new technology, we experience varied social media platforms where people of varied cultural settings expresses their views freely and confidently (Hunsicker, 2011). However, such information may trigger confusion and conflicts. Journalists have adopted a mechanism of getting information from these social media sites to write articles and publications. This is likely to cause more prosecution of journalists with contempt at courts (Elias, 2012). Most of social medial related information is usually fabricated, and if taken seriously, will lead to the prosecution of the journalist because it is very difficult to get the informant. This is provided by Shield law that argues that journalist must produce the source of the information if the court comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to have the source of data to make a sound judgment about the accused (Chadwick, 2013). Development of technology and social media will also see many journalists going to prison because of unintentional and intentional leak of vital information to wrong persons such as terrorist groups.

I would conclude by saying that journalists with contempt should be charge with if they refuse to provide information for proper operations of stated laws. Shield laws are there to protect both the journalist and the informants. In my views, improvement of technology and social media will increasingly place a heavy responsibility on professional journalists to maintain high standards of fact-checking, honesty and objectivity if considerations such as control are exhibited.

In the article, Bill Clinton’s Body-Snatching Legacy, Bovard explores on the decision of the then American president Bill Clinton to bomb Serbia in the year 1999.  The author uses various styles and rhetoric devices to deliver his message to the readers. The article is mixed with opinions as well as evidence from different sources. The quotes of parties relating to the attack and the events after are well presented. The opening remarks applauds the then US president Clinton for his public recommended on his devotion in championing human rights.  This however, is contrasted with what the European Union task force came up with. The group   claims that the decision to bomb Serbia saw atrocities such as murder; sell of kidney, livers and other body parts increase. During this bombing, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) participated in unlawful abductions, killings illegal detentions, army disappearance, sexual violence, destruction of churches and religious sites among many others.   The article as well incorporates   past information in ensuring that the arguments raised are substantial and credible. For instance,  events in the future such as the erection of Clinton statute in Serbia in 1999 and  the other attacks such as Bush attack on Iraq and Obama attack on Libya helps to  make the argument stronger

The author also uses figures and statistics that indicate indepth research. For instance, he states that in 2003, 70% of the Serbian people that lived in Kosovo in 1999 had already fled. Therefore, Albanian who made up 95% dominated Kosovo. The language and word choice is also good. The author uses simple English to deliver his message. In the article, ‘How the Feds Distort Their ‘Food Insecurity’ Numbers’, Bovard presents an argument of how the federal government distorts the numbers relating to food insecurity. He uses various rhetoric devices with a harsh tone to present his opinions and fact.

He is very categorical and accurate in his arguments. He opens the article by quoting the date that the department of Agriculture released their annual results on the Household Food security in US survey that was done for the year 2013. The argument is strengthened by use of facts and statistics. For instance, he states that the survey indicated that 49 million Americans were food insecure a decrease from 14.5 when compared to the year 2012. Despise these statistics, politicians and pundits use the numbers in a wrongful manner to proof the national hunger crisis.

The democrats are known to have a history of using the surveys statistics in a wrongful way. The author as well uses quotes from prominent personalities such as Obama to develop his arguments. Sourcing information from various sources makes the article appear credible and reliable. Even after elapse of 40 years since declaration war on hunger by President Nixon, it is astounding that no accurate measures have been taken to remedy the situation as millions of Americans continue to lack food.

The article is very clear and professional. The author even though uses simple words and simple sentences, it is organized and easy to read and understand. The tone has remained strong; there is a sense of bitterness and carelessness among the leaders hence the reason why many people continue to suffer. The tones and the themes in the article therefore resonate.

In the AmeriCorps at 20 is a wasteful flop: column James Bovard presents a clear argument about the failure of the program using different rhetorical devices such as quotations, questions and history to demonstrate the fact the program has failed.

The article opens with the recent welcome of the AmeriCorps recruits in White House for the 20th anniversary. The program was started in 1994 by the former US president Bill Clinton with the aim of serving the nation. However, over the years, the program has not achieved any substantial achievement. The organization has 75,000 members who continue to receive salary and education benefits for various tasks such as social, education among other projects without any impact on the society. Other government institutions duplicate some of the roles played by the organization.

The author incorporates quotes and information from different sources making the article credible and comprehensive. For instance, in 2003, there was a complaint from the Office of Management and Budget that the organisation gave more emphasis on the time an individual serves as opposed to the impact the entity has on the community.
