You will be required to write an 6-8 page (1500 – 2000 word) critical essay addressing one of the primary themes that we cover in the class. Possible subjects might be, for example, the establishment of company rule (early colonialism), the economics of high colonialism (the late nineteenth century), the development of nationalism in British India, communal politics in the lead up to partition ñ or other topics of your own choosing (and verified by me.).
Once you have chosen a specific topic for you essay, you should develop a concise argument. That is, you need to advance a specific angle of investigation that is yours. A term paper does need to summarize the arguments and information that you have researched, but it also must reflect your own, independent, analysis of the same. At least three scholarly sources (academic books and peer-reviewed journal articles ñ in print or online) should be used to substantiate your argument. Encyclopedias, textbooks, popular magazines and newspapers are not acceptable scholarly sources. Media outside of scholarly publications (internet sources, movies, etc.) are not acceptable unless approved in writing by the instructor at least three working days before the due date for the essay. An information sheet for citing reference will be posted on the course website. The essay will be graded by the coherency of its structure, the validity of its central premise (thesis), the depth of the research it demonstrates, as well as by its grammar and clarity of prose.

Andre Breton’s First Surrealist Manifesto (1924) and how he set the foundation for surrealism. Use one rule of surrealism and apply it to the movie and write about it as it says below.
A few weeks back we read AndrÈ Breton’s “First Surrealist Manifesto” (1924). In it Breton lays down the blueprints for the movement, establishing some “rules” and combining elements of abstraction and poetry. More than any document, this one clarifies the spirit, style, and tone of surrealism.
Unlike Buuel’s films, for instance, a movie such as The Big Lebowski likely does not intentionally illustrate ideas from Breton’s manifesto. But that doesn’t mean this manifesto (or Surrealism, for that matter) is dead and long forgotten; or that we can’t make connections between these two texts, using either to help us think about the other.
In this short piece, pick one kernel or concept or “rule” from the manifesto, and discuss how it applies to The Big Lebowski. How does the movie, in other words, animate something from this classic document that helps you to understand Surrealism?
No need to write up a traditional introduction and conclusion. I suggest diving right in by introducing and clarifying the idea from the manifesto you want to focus on (quoting a passage is fine). Then discuss how you feel the movie applies or makes use of this concept or rule, and how either or both texts (manifesto and movie) are illuminated in the process.

With the increase in prosperity brought about by industrialization came a number of ills such as the exploitation of workers, including children. Unbridled capitalism and the pursuit of wealth, while also giving rise to the middle class, led to the greatest wealth disparity the country had ever seen at the expense of the working class, whose members found themselves working six or seven days a week up to 12 hours a day in horrible conditions, often not making enough to support themselves and their families. In response, a group of people emerged, the Progressives, who sought ways to make the lives of this wretched class better. Among the most prominent Progressives was President Theodore Roosevelt and his progressive sentiments are illustrated in his speech, Who is a Progressive?
Who is a Progressive? Theodore Roosevelt, April 1912
Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:
According to Roosevelt, what are the characteristics of a progressive?
Explain what are the characteristics of those who are “anti-progressive” and what types of activities do they engage in?
What are the goals of progressivism and what areas of society should be addressed?
Analyze what progressive achievements does Roosevelt highlight in his speech?
Make sure to cite and reference sources. Make sure that the writing is clear, well-developed, and free from spelling and grammatical errors. Please note that part of your grade is to include a documented example of the primary source.

This is how my professor wants it. it is a compare and contrast paper.
Begin the paper with an address to your audience. Your audience is a group of scholars who are familiar with Mary Louise Pratt’s ideas on contact zones. You will be informing the reader about how power is abused in small, seemly innocent ways before a violent genocide. You will be arguing about how social practices emerge more out of cultural attitudes inherent in populations than out of the encounters themselves. This prepares your audience for your main idea about the cultural frame that influences the encounter.
Next, write the main Idea
Begin with your main thesis. Next, briefly summarize how you will prove your thesis by proposing the differences you see between Columbus and the Amerindians in relation to trade, religion, and language.
Definition Paragraph
Define a contact zone by paraphrasing Mary Louise Pratt’s ideas in her essay Imperial Eyes. Make sure you cover her main points. Begin with her strongest point and then add how she supports that idea. This paragraph on Pratt should be about four sentences on how she is defining her terms.
Section Headings:
Next, write out the 3 main topic sentences that will guide the reader through your expanded thesis in the body of the paper. These statements are ideas rather than descriptions, summaries, and examples. As such they are usually written in complex sentences.
In a compare/contrast essay the usual thesis statement / topic sentence structure takes the form of explicitly stating differences. What they have in common is the topics we are comparing: Trade, religion, and language.
Your three main topic sentences in this case would be about how the Zuni approach trade, religion, and language by being open to experience which you would name in a specific way in each section
Reflection: The last paragraph of the paper will be a consideration of the way we witness micro-aggressions in social practices today. Be specific. Focus on your own experience and step through a process that you have witnessed to see the way these encounters can be handled skillfully to avoid escalations. What kind of preparation informs the participants to help them avoid normalizing an unstable practice? Think about the work place, social interactions, seller/buyer trades, or classroom practices. Do a close reading of an experience.

For much of the twentieth century, there was a debate about who built Great Zimbabwe, who should own the artifacts from the site, and, more recently, who should control access to its ruins. Delve into one of these controversies by posting to this discussion. You may want to read several of the sources posted, then choose ONE source to examine in detail by answering the questions under Step 1.
STEP 1:
In about 300 words, focus on one of the potential sources below and do all of the following:
Explain the context of your chosen source (Consider: what can you surmise about the author’s background, when the source was written, and how the source reflects attitudes prevalent when it was written)
Identify the source’s point of view (Answer: What stance does your source take? How does the source’s stance relate to the debate?)
Assess the source by addressing: How does your source try to legitimize its point of view? What is your assessment of its point of view?
