Diversity Reflection

The areas that I define as my strong points or strengths include those proficiencies that I marked 4; that is, I strongly agree. These include the following: I have the awareness of the issues and needs that relate to English language learners and I am actually conversant in the strategies for supporting their learning; and I fashion a learning community wherein individual dissimilarities are respected. Moreover, it includes the proficiency that I utilize educational approaches which are sensitive to the many experiences of learners and which address dissimilar learning and performance styles.

The areas that I define as needing improvements are basically those ones which I agree with, albeit not strongly; that is, areas which I marked 3. These include the proficiency that I have a thorough understanding of uniqueness in learning; I appreciate and could recognize dissimilarities in approaches to learning and performance, including dissimilar performance modes and styles of learning, and I am able to facilitate instruction which helps utilize the strengths of students as the starting point for growth. Other areas in which I need improvement include the following proficiencies: I understand the way in which the learning of students is influenced by individual experiences, prior learning, talents, in addition to culture, language, community and family values. I identify, design, and support instruction appropriate to the learners’ development stages, styles of learning, needs and strengths; and that I know how and when to access suitable resources or services to meet exceptional learning needs.

Effective educators have the responsibility of meeting the educational needs of a more and more diverse student population. My dispositions, attitudes, and values have been changed as regards equitability and the belief that every student is able to learn in that I now hold a mindset in which I believe that instructional design, behaviours, interaction patterns, activities, as well as expectations should be equitable and fair for every learner. Regarding the classroom climate, the class should be inviting and its decorations must actually reflect the images of every learner (Chamberlain, 2011). The focus has to be on active participation of the learners. Learning activities reflect the commitment of the educator to providing equitable access for all learners to the opportunity to achieve academically, vocationally, and socially. In a classroom with students from diverse populations, the educator has high positive expectations for every learner.

Educators should strive to meet the individual learning needs of every child. During the lessons, educators should remember the many ways that kids learn. Therefore, daily activities and presentations should provide all learners with opportunities of receiving instruction in dissimilar modalities. Each child should be given opportunities for demonstrating their understanding in ways which let them to utilize their strengths whilst working to improve their weak points (Blanchett & Shealey, 2013). In a diverse classroom, assessment is invariable and is helpful to both the educator and the learner. It tells both of them what is actually needed in order to make the next instruction responsive and meaningful to the needs of the learner.

Furthermore, in a diverse classroom: learners are assessed in many ways; achievement of learners is defined by individual growth and not on reliance on one, preset goal; the role of the educator is one of a facilitator, mentor, coach and fellow learner since the classroom is student-centred; and several resources are employed besides textbooks (Obiakor & Rotatori, 2014). Additionally, syllabus is developed around skill mastery as well as authentic, thoughtful problems to solve. The instruction provided is guided by an understanding of several kinds of intelligence; and every learner is encouraged to see himself/herself as a capable learner and is held answerable to that responsibility and belief. This would be carried out within a climate which values learning diversity whilst continuing to improve every student’s ability to learn. In a class with a varied student population, learners are provided with a lot of opportunity for using metacognition as a tool for improving their capacity to learn, and educators do not utilize lecture as their main teaching method since the teaching is just occasionally student passive/teacher active (Smith-Collins, 2011).

In addition, this has impacted the social, intellectual, engagement, motivation as well as personal development of my students in that they are active, and not passive and are equally responsible for acquiring their education. For example, the learners are actively involved in the learning and they share in classroom decision-making process and have a choice and voice in their educational environment. Moreover, more of their learning needs are met, and they have been able to see how satisfying learning can really be. They have also been inspired to be better than they were. Furthermore, the students are beginning to acquire the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills which they would require to be successful in the interdependent and pluralistic world wherein they would live and work as adults. Specific examples of these competencies include being cross-culturally competent and multilingual.

To continue to grow and improve in reaching every student, several action items would be put into practice to ensure that every learner receives equitable opportunities to achieve. These are illustrated in the table below:

  Action step Monitoring progress
1 Ensure active participation of students by involving them in classroom decision-making by December 12, 2015 Set milestones to reach by a particular date
2 Provide instructional design, interaction patterns, activities, as well as expectations that are equitable and fair for every learner by December 15, 2016 Set milestones to reach by a particular date

Section 3—Reflecting on Your Professional Development Plan

Professional growth and development takes considerable time before one achieves the set objectives.  I have set goals and had a clear purpose I wanted to achieve in my life. Over the years, I have taken on various leadership courses as well as responsibilities an opportunity that has helped me to develop high level of confidence.

I do believe in nurturing of leadership. People learn about qualities of a leader through the experiences in the environments they come from.  I am a living testimony that indeed leaders require mentoring and motivation. Taking leadership responsibilities at an early time has provided me an opportunity to interact and to sharpen my communication and problem solving. My level of confidence has also increased. I have as well learned Miller, 2011).  The diversities in corporations and the suitable approaches to manage or lead such environments . Therefore, studying this course has enabled me to gain deeper knowledge and skills concerning leadership. The responsibilities I have been engaging in have as well contributed to larger extent in evolving of my democratic styles of leadership.  As a leader, it is important to create a conducive environment where the managers and the followers can engage in a constructive discussions and criticism for the betterment of the organization.

Leadership to me is key to success of any organization (Cox, 2015). Leaders that have missions and visions will take an entity far to achieve the set goals. One leadership theory that I do believe has contributed immensely in shaping my professional development plan is participative leadership style. I do believe that a leader should involve other people in their leadership. Furthermore, I have personally benefited from the mentorship and network programs established as a leader. Learning and sharing with other members of the organization enlarges ones thinking and mind to address the problems that the organization faces.

I have remained steadfast to the visions and goals set.  In my current professional position, I believe that the appropriate theory to implement is transformational. I am the kind of an individual that is receptive to the changing times and concerned about the future generations. I will work to trigger change, to motivate, mobilize and trigger innovations and creativity among the followers. every person in the organization  should  give their best for the organization to achieve its goals and objectives.

The course has exposed me to valuable knowledge on different areas to enhance quality and streamline operations as well ensure diversity in terms of cultures and aspects that pertains to organizations. I am so enriched with knowledge that I do believe will be of great values when it comes to prosperity of the organization. Concepts learned and goals identified will impact greatly on the decisions that I will make as a dynamic leader in future. As a leader, I will have to respect the views and opinions of the subordinates (Bauer, 2015).  I will therefore treat them with resilient and reverence as well ensure that they take part in the decision making process. I will as well ensure that I adopt to sound ethical practices as a leader.  A leader must remain honest and have a sense of reasonability to them. Servant leadership is therefore essential in this scenario. Furthermore, as a leader, I will endeavor to enhance quality and stream operations as well ensure diversity in terms of cultures. Therefore, as a leader the focus will be to ensure that people from different backgrounds embrace each other and work together for the success of the organization.

Individual Reflection

Question one

Forecasting resembles what is known as the budget. The mechanics applied to come up with forecasting are also the same to that of a plan. However, forecasting is different from a plan. This is due to how it is been used and the type of the data it contains. If the management is able to use the forecasting wisely, it will be a major tool that will ever ensure that the company will never go out of cash. Forecasting helps the management or a company to make informed decision and help adjust to the existing plans according to the latest information available public or private. Company use forecasting as an educated goal and as a budgeting objective, (Lal, & Srivastava, 2009, pg. 887).

Question two

Operational budget

This comprise of the company’s sales, production, direct materials cost, direct labor costs, administrative cost and the cost of goods manufactured. These categories all have their own budget and the most component is sales.

Financial budget

It comprises five different categories. The expected amount for each quarter for a SMEs will vary different, the schedule of the expected cash inflows is based on forecasting such as sale revenues, the cash budget, statement of income stamen and the statement of financial positions of all the budget cash.

Question three

Internal stakeholders

Customers, staffs, and training department

External stakeholders

Project managers and developers

Question four

The organization has the necessary and quality products and services that the consumer want and the company is in a position to produce and sell at a profit, (Vego, & Naval War College U.S. 2009, pg. 32).

Question five

This new concept will help to be able to forecast the expected future cash inflow and outflow of the company major components of the main budget. Also, the budget planning will have to involve all the primary stakeholders. This will help to come up with informed public and private information that will guide the company financial in a given fiscal year.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Guided Reflection of the video “Receiving a patient to the ward from PACU”

Introduction

Nurses have a duty to ensure that patients receive quality care to enhance their recovery. Patients have to understand assessment procedures and interventions as they provide care to patients that have come from post anesthesia care unit (PACU) with abdominal pain and PCA. This paper is a reflection on the role and behaviors of nurses that receive patient in the ward from PACU behave. It as well deliberates on various aspects relating to communication and post op orders among others.

In this video, nurses in charge of the patient performed various assessments to ensure that the patient was in a stable condition. On arrival in the PACU the nurse re-evaluated the patient and provided a verbal report to the nurse in charge. The nurses recorded the vital signs and blood oxygenation saturation every after a duration of time. They also assessed the blood pressure, pulse rate and respiratory rate of the patient. They as well measured the patient temperature. The nurses as well monitored on various aspects such as pain, central venous pressure and intracranial pressure. The nurse as well checked whether the patient was breathing normally.  The nurses checked the blood pressure of the patient using a blood pressure cuff to ensure the she was in a stable condition. They also placed a warm blanket around the body of the patient to enhance warmth. They also checked and assessed the condition of the bandages on the areas of the body that had injuries such as the legs and the abdominal to ensure that they were in better condition. They also ensured that the patient controlled analgesia (PCA) used for pain control was functioning well. The patient uses the PCA to self-dose pain-relieving medication by pushing a bottom. The PCA is computerized to provide small pain dosage. The assessments conducted on the patients were prioritized to ensure that the patient recover well.

These assessments were adequately prioritized because the nurse in charge complied with the requirements on how patients from PACU should be treated. The nurses had assembled and correctly completed documentation to provide insights on the progress of the patient. There were a lengthy discussions and directives between the two nurses. The other nurse from PACU on the status of the patient briefed the receiving nurse and kept on directing and assisting the ward nurses on the procedures. The handover was therefore done well hence contributing to proper assessments by the receiving nurse.

Communication is one of the most important aspects when providing care to patients. Through communication, people get to understand one another and help to create a conducive environment to work as a team. The communication between the nurses was effective as they worked together as a team. They were audible in their conversation and allowed each one to speak before one could interrupt. This therefore enhanced their level of communication. They also listened keenly to one another and followed directives as given. They also  maintained  good eye contact and used  gestures sparingly to bolster their communication something that made  them to move on the save level. Communication promoted teamwork since they understood their role in providing care to the patients and this minimized conflicts but instead helped them to provide quality services to the patient (Reynolds, 2010). The receiving nurse in the conversation asked various orders about the patient receiving care. One of them is how the patient is feeling, what medication should be given, the period to give meals, and how to carryout assessment of the chest and the bandaged leg.

Communication between a nurse and patient is also very important in promoting understanding and delivery of care.  In this video, the communication between the nurses and the patient was effective. The nurses already had established a conducive environment that made the patient feel at home. The tone of voice, facial persons and body gestures of the nurses helped to create siren environment for negotiation (Milby, Bohmer, Gerbershagen, Joppich & Wappler, 2014). Even though communication between the nurses and the patient was sparingly, it was successful. The patient responded to the queries the nurses asked which helped to gain an in depth understanding about how she was feeling. She also was able to receive advice that the nurses gave to her as she laid on her bed.

This interaction between the nurses themselves and the nurses and the patients is supported by Virginia Henderson Needs theory. The theory has three major assumptions that pertain to nursing; nurses have a duty to provide care to patient until the patient is able to care for themselves (Risjord, 2014).  Nurses should always be willing to serve; should therefore devote to their patients every time and nurses should have a certain level of education such as bachelor’s degree in science and art to serve as a nurse (Im, &Ju Chang, 2012). The nurses in the movies showed their devotion and dedication in providing their support to ensure that a patient recovers. Their assessments and interventions is a clear indication of their readiness to help patients to recover. Furthermore, the nurses through their interactions and intervention, it is evident that they have requisite skills and experience to offer the services they provided.

There are a number of post-operative orders that manifest in the video as the nurse provided care to the patient. The patient had vital signs that indicated that she had been through PACU. She was lying on the bed and had bandages covered on the areas with wounds such as the chest and the leg. She also had PCA to control her pain. The nurses as well had a file containing laboratory investigations about the patient condition and status. The nurses discussed about these issues and how they should be controlled and checked. The nurses as well provided advice on the period the patient was supposed to wait before being given a meal.

Based on the available literature, one recommendation that require improvement for future practice is ensuring that the patient is under continuous surveillance and care.  Nurses should provide all sorts of care including psychological care to enhance recovery of the patient (Phillips, Street, Kent & Cadeddu, 2014). The focus should not be on the physical care as sometimes patients are mentally affected and are therefore affected when they are discharged. This will go greater miles in ensuring quick recovery of the patient. It is also important to uphold to ethical standards at all time when rendering health care to patients. Nurses should be respectful and be honest.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Nursing Reflection Paper

Nursing is one of the fields that experience continuous changes as new strains of disease crop up as well as development of new technologies. Nurses, therefore, have the obligation to remain steadfast by equipping themselves with more skills and knowledge to render high quality healthcare. To manage the changes, Institute of Medicine (IOM) has been in the forefront in formulating appropriate strategies as well as recommendations (Institute of Medicine, 2013). In this reflection paper, the author expounds on the personal strategies to meet the IOM recommendations, and also deliberates on job markets based on different educational qualifications.

In line with the IOM recommendations, nurses will render quality healthcare to their patients. IOM has recommended increase in the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020, double the number of nurses with a doctorate degree by 2020, and ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning (Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2014). I am optimistic that the recommendations are essential and by 2020, I will be well equipped and ready to execute the duties as a nurse.

As per now, I already have acquired a baccalaureate degree and I am on the process of enrolling for a doctorate degree. Increase in the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree is a good start and an indication of the commitment of the institute and the government to equip nurses with more skills. This increase is an indication of commitment to render quality healthcare services. Increasing the number of nurses with doctorate degree by 2020 is a positive initiative to the healthcare too. I do believe that I will be among the nurses with doctorate degrees to help impact positively on the society. I do hold the view that nurses need to engage in lifelong learning. This is the only avenue that will make them knowledgeable and competent to deal with the ever-changing issues in health care. Even as a student and an employee for a number of years, I have always welcomed new ideas and concepts. I have gained more skills working and sharing with other people on health issues.  I have attended committees and seminars on health care, which have helped to expand my scope of thinking and knowledge. Furthermore, through exchange programs, I have as well gained more skills and experience. I also embrace research and for many years, I have participated in various researches and will continue to carry out more to gain more insights on diseases and on healthcare as a whole. I, therefore, welcome the recommendations. They are not a surprise to me because they rhyme with my vision and objectives.

Acquiring more skills has become essential as the demand of competent nurses increase.  Having higher education level, it means that one will have many chances to work in different job levels. In line with my educational qualification, I can work as a registered nurse in any healthcare setting. Increasing my level of education will allow me to have an upper hand in the current job markets.  Having the skills or expertise required in the market will definitely make me valuable, as every employer will be in need of such skills as mine.

My role in future as a nurse with increased level of education will impact on my nursing roles extensively. The nursing field keeps on changing, hence, gaining more skills and knowledge gives me an opportunity to manage various health problems in nursing (Muehlbauer, 2012).  Technology is very essential in healthcare and with high skill, rendering quality care is guaranteed (Institute of Medicine, 2013).

I am well equipped and my vision rhymes with IOM recommendations.  My desire is to see every citizen receives quality healthcare regardless of demographic factors. I am still learning and believe that as I do acquire more skills, I will impact positively on the heath of the members of society. I do believe that nothing is impossible with passion and dedication.

Order Instructions:

This paper is a summary of all the nursing papers you guys have written for me for the past weeks so it will make sense if the same writer complete this reflection also by going back and using all the resources of the previous papers to complete this paper. the writer should pay close attention to all the requirements and respond to all the questions. It requires a minimum of 7 paragraphs in 4 pages.

Reflection and Evaluation
Reflect upon your new knowledge about nursing research and EBP. Explain how this new knowledge will influence your daily practice? What was your most significant learning? What assignment did you find the most and least meaningful to your understanding of research and EBP? Did you meet the course outcomes?
Your role as an advanced practice nurse is paramount in nursing research. You will be examining studies for evidence which can be taken to the bedside. Without nurses prepared for this, the research-practice gap will continue to widen. You have learned how to generate research questions, whether they are from practice or from the literature. You have learned about various research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative. Over the weeks, you have analyzed nursing research studies, both quantitative and qualitative. You have touched on collaborative research efforts. You have been introduced to legal and ethical principles in research. You have investigated a clinical guideline and applied it to a practice setting.
Now for the big question: can you now use research to improve practice? Are you able to take the evidence you find in the literature and translate it into practice guidelines which staff nurses will be willing to adopt? Only you can answer this important question.

This paper provides you with an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned during the course. To accomplish this, please create a minimum 7 paragraph written reflection of your personal learning achievements and professional growth as a result of this course. Remember that a paragraph cannot be less than 5 sentences, and it is important that all details be included in this paper as it clearly will demonstrate what you have understood in this course. Use the guidelines below to do your evaluations.

1. Evaluate personal learning achievements pertaining to each course outcomes:
1: Evaluate quantitative research studies through systematic examination of all aspects of a nursing research study.
2: Apply research findings from quantitative studies to nursing practice.
3: Evaluate qualitative research studies through systematic examination of all aspects of a nursing research study.
4: Apply research findings from qualitative studies to nursing practice.
5: Evaluate the body of evidence from nursing research in order to support an evidence-based change in nursing practice.
6: Create a plan for application of evidence to current nursing practice.
7; Reflect on how the learning you achieved in this course will support your success in the final course when you will develop a written evidence-based proposal for a change in nursing practice.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Reflection and Assimilation

Considering all the knowledge gained over the course of the research project, I can effectively utilize research to improve nursing practice. In essence, I am able to take the evidence which I find in literature and then translate it into practice guidelines that nursing staff would be willing to adopt. I have been able to achieve each of the course outcome. These are described below.

I have gained ability and competence to evaluate quantitative research. As a result of the research conducted, I am able to evaluate various quantitative research studies through systematic examination of all aspects of a nursing research study. I am able to effectively assess and critique various quantitative research approaches such as cross-sectional design. I am also able to evaluate grounded theory type of quantitative research, whose purpose is theory development. Moreover, I am able to evaluate ethnography research studies which describe the characteristics of a culture (Beck, 2013). Equally important, I can properly evaluate quantitative case studies, which describe in an in-depth manner the experience of an institution, a community, a group, a family or an individual. When evaluating quantitative research studies in nursing, I have learned the importance of bearing in mind the sampling and data collection methods utilized by the researcher, the variables of the study, the research questions formulated, validity and reliability of data, as well as outcomes of the research.

I have gained the ability to apply research findings from quantitative studies. The research has enabled me to use the findings of quantitative research as evidence in nursing practice. The new evidence gained from quantitative studies could be utilized by managers and decision makers in healthcare organizations to solve challenges they experience within their healthcare facilities, and to improve patient care (Aveyard & Sharp, 2013). In essence, I am now able to understand the utility and meaning of quantitative research results and how they can serve as vital evidence for nursing practice changes. Before the findings of quantitative research can be applied, it is imperative to determine if those findings are valid (Jacelon & O’Dell, 2005). In this regard, thanks to this research, I am now able to determine the validity of quantitative research findings before applying them.

I have also gained the ability and competence to evaluate qualitative research studies. Qualitative research is basically understood as a method of inquiry where the investigator, acting as an instrument for the collection of data, seeks to answer questions regarding why or how a given phenomenon happens (Holloway & Wheeler, 2013). I can properly evaluate several qualitative research designs in nursing research including ethnography, phenomenology, grounded-theory, as well as qualitative description. To evaluate whether or not a particular qualitative study in nursing research is useful, I have learned to critically appraise qualitative research in terms of validity and thoroughness. The main areas to consider when evaluating the qualitative research include: if the research question is clear and substantiated sufficiently; and if the design is apt for the research question. Others are if the sampling method was apt for the research design and research question; if data was gathered and managed in a systematic way; if data analysis was apt; and if the description of findings is thorough.

I have gained the ability to apply research findings from qualitative studies. The research has allowed me to be able to properly understand how I can apply the qualitative research findings by asking several questions, such as what relevance and meaning does the qualitative study have for my practice? The question of what meaning could be made of the findings would have to be examined (Smith & Firth, 2011). The study should produce usable knowledge. The other questions are: does the qualitative research study assist me in understanding the context of my practice? and, does the qualitative research study enhance my knowledge regarding my particular practice? I have been able to understand the generalizability of qualitative findings, considering that findings from qualitative findings are not always generalisable (Holloway, Wheeler & Holloway, 2013).

The project has enhanced my skills of evaluating the body of evidence from nursing research. This research has, to a great extent, helped me to improve on my capability to evaluate the body of evidence from nursing research as regards the subject matter in order to support an evidence-based change within nursing practice. This research project involved extensive review of existing literature on the subject matter with the aim of finding evidence to use to support evidence-based change. It is of note that evidence-based practice is a vital approach in providing the best quality care to patients, as well as the patients’ families. Nursing practice which is based on evidence improves patient outcomes and helps to reduce uncertainty usually experienced by healthcare personnel and their patients alike (Boswell, Boswell & Cannon, 2014). Because of this research project, I can clearly distinguish literature that is based on evidence from traditional literature not based on evidence. In essence, this project has enhanced my ability to systematically search for the most relevant, pertinent and current evidence, and to critically appraise this evidence in order to answer a clinical question. Conducting research helps in providing the essential evidence on which to base nursing practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).

The plan for the application of evidence to the current nursing practice entails the following: (i) disseminating the evidence. Evidence would be disseminated through various mediums such as press releases in local newspapers, television and radio stations; publications in recognized journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Science Journal, and Nature Journal; websites. Dissemination will also take place using posters and flyers; oral presentations; as well as organization/hospital-based and professional committee meetings. The evidence will be disseminated with the aim of reaching the wider nursing community who will apply the evidence-based practice. (ii) Encouraging nurses and other healthcare professionals to adopt and implement the evidence-based practice in their daily practice at their workplace in order improve patient care and safety, and reduce injury or death from falls. (iii) Managing and overcoming any barriers and resistance to adopting the evidence-based practice, for instance by providing training (Giuliano & Polanowicz, 2008).

The learning which I have achieved in this course will support my success in the final course when I will be required to develop a written evidence-based proposal for a change in nursing strategy. This is primarily because I will be better positioned and adequately prepared to develop the written evidence-based proposal for a change in nursing practice considering that I would have already conducted the research project and gained the evidence necessary to write the proposal for an evidence-based practice. This research project has given me the essential information, knowledge and necessary evidence on which to base nursing practice. The learning I attained in this course has improved my knowledge and widened my understanding on the evidence-based nursing practice. This will certainly support my success significantly in the final course when in will develop a written evidence-based proposal for a change in nursing practice.
