Determination of effective accommodation is necessary for employers that want to enhance productivity in their companies through retaining valued employees. I reviewed a handbook about my relative’s former company where he was an employee (Schur et al, 2014). The company through the handbook articulates and gives the qualification of one being a qualified disabled employee. The person has to meet legitimate skills, education, work k experience and also able to perform necessary job duties without accommodation. However, accommodation is provided by the company to enhance loyalty among employees to the company and also reduction of hiring and training costs. The company’s handbook clearly gives information on how the accommodation would be offered to employees’ e.g. through making necessary changes and providing assistance at the workplace for a better working environment (Schur et al, 2014). The company has made adequate efforts to make crucial adjustments to the job environment to offer the disabled full rights and privileges as the other employees.

The company presents accommodation request criteria to the disabled employees so as to determine if it reasonable in nature. It is the sole responsibility of the disabled person to request an accommodation which would be offered on the individual basis (Schur et al, 2014). However, the company would make efforts to try and identify disabled workers requiring accommodation if they fail to communicate effectively about their needs. Before presenting an accommodation request, the employee must have mental of physical impairment limiting crucial activities in life (Schur et al, 2014). Another vital step is the presentation of history or record of impairment which would make the company in making informed decisions regarding adjustments and changes to be made for the best accommodation. Flexible, the interactive process is followed as a vital step during the provision of accommodation. Legal disability is determined where reasonable solutions are applied by the company.

The company has formulated the process and policies to be followed in the determination of the reasonable accommodation whether work related or disabling injuries. There is a difference in policies guiding the company when it comes to offering accommodation. The source of difference results from the type of injuries that the worker presents as a request for accommodation. The policies of the company indicate that in the case of work-related injuries; the situation is analyzed on a case by case basis (Schur et al, 2014). The people injured at work are not protected by the accommodation policies as compared to the disabled people with the physical and mental impairments. The injuries are not considered to be impediments to the extent they limit life activities as compared to the disabled workers. Compensations are provided to the injured who do not qualify for accommodation. In this case, the company does not regard them as qualified to reasonable accommodation. However, the company has a policy that protects the injured who are considered disabled legally. The pass of the medical, physical examination is essential when in it comes to treatment of the workers with different types of injury (Schur et al, 2014).

A written distinctive is important when formulating policies regarding accommodation of employees. It would provide the employees with clear information about the policies as many legal issues might arise when the workers try to protect themselves and fight for their rights (Schur et al, 2014). The policy is very fair as there are cases of fraud brought about by the injured employees not meeting the criteria to have the right to accommodation. Such a case can lead to the genuine employees failing to get accommodation despite their serious disability status in life. The policy also protects the company from incurring losses, e.g., due to accommodation costs and undue hardships thus it is fair in nature (Schur et al, 2014).

The chosen grade-appropriate Common Core anchor standard for reading is the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading. This standard continues developing through the grade levels considering that the College and Career Readiness and grade-specific standards define the understandings and skills that every student has to demonstrate. The CCR provides wide-ranging standards whereas the grade-specific standards provide further specificity. Moreover, this standard ensures that students read deeply and extensively from many increasingly challenging and high-quality informational and literary texts, which in turn allows them to develop a foundation of knowledge in those many disciplines that would also provide them with the background to become better readers in all content areas. The learners are able to acquire this foundation since the curriculum would be coherently and deliberately structured to build rich content knowledge across and within grade levels (Common Core Standards Initiative, 2016).

The grade level where there is likely to be significant jumps in difficulty is grade level 6 since the learners may still have trouble assessing the way in which purpose or viewpoint shapes the style and content of a text. Basing on my classroom experience, the grade level where students can demonstrate mastery currently is grade level 9 since the learners are able to easily analyse the way that 2 or more texts address the same topics or themes so as to develop knowledge or to compare the approaches taken by the authors.

After reading pages two to nine of Appendix A, how text complexity is measured would shift with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for reading in that a 3-part model would be used in measuring text complexity and this will help to make text complexity a regular part of instruction. The 3-part model is essentially a blend of quantitative and qualitative measures of task complexity with task and reader considerations. Quantitative dimensions of text complexity include the features of text complexity for instance text cohesion, sentence length, and word frequency or length, which are hard or not possible for human readers to assess properly, particularly in long texts, and are therefore usually measured by computer software (Common Core Standards Initiative, 2016). Qualitative dimensions of text complexity comprise the features of text complexity which are only measurable or are best measured by a human reader who is very attentive, for instance levels of purpose or meaning; knowledge demands; language conventionality and clearness; and structure. Reader and task considerations: when establishing whether or not a given text is suitable for a particular student, it is important to take into account variables that are unique to certain readers for instance experiences, knowledge and motivation and to certain tasks for instance the difficulty and purpose of the assigned task and the posed questions (Common Core Standards Initiative, 2016).

After reading pages 23-25 of Appendix A, writing is going to change or shift with the CCSS in that a blend of 3 types of writing would be utilized often by writers to achieve their purposes. These three categories of writing are narrative writing, informational/explanatory writing, and argument writing. In Science, the writing demands would be that learners would need to make assertions in the form of conclusions or statements which address problems or answer questions. They will utilize data in a scientifically correct manner to collect evidence and employ their understanding of scientific concepts in arguing for their claims. The student will also write narrative accounts of the systematic procedures they follow in his/her investigations so that other people may be able to replicate those procedures and possibly attain similar findings. In History/Social Sciences, the writing demands will be that the students would be need to analyse evidence from a number of secondary and primary sources in order to advance an assertion which is supported by the evidence, and argue for an empirically or historically situated interpretation (Common Core Standards Initiative, 2016). The student will also have to write narrative descriptions regarding people and construct event models of what took place, using the most pertinent information from their sources.

The role of argument in standards is that argument literacy is essential to being educated. Argument compels writers to assess the weaknesses as well as strengths of different viewpoints. When a student is asked to consider multiple views on an issue or topic, the student will have to think deeply and critically, evaluate the validity of his or her own thoughts, and expect counterclaims against his/her own claims. When promoting argument literacy in their classes, the implications that would be there for teachers of ELLs is that the ELLs should acquire particular skills that are crucial to writing arguments. The nurse employed verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal behaviors to assess Carla’s level of risk as well to help her regain control, focus, and emotions and to calm down. One thing that the nurse did well was collaborating with the client by engaging her in a constructive conversation. The nurse was able to observe the behaviour of the client and straight away found a way to engage her and to allow the client talk. Another thing that I feel that the nurse did well is offering herself to help the client manage her risk. This allowed the client to open up. The nurse listened actively by sitting squarely and facing the client, she was also in an open posture, she maintained an eye contact, she learned forward and was relaxed. I think this technique enabled the nurse to assist Carla take control of her emotions and focus and emotions.

Managing risks in health facilities is one of the functions of nurses (Alaszewski, 2005). Risk management helps to deter occurrence of uncertainties. In this situation, I would suggest various changes of Carla’s risk management. One of the changes is to assign her a therapist that will help her to control her anger and to quit smoking. A therapist has the qualifications and the best skills and knowledge to assist her manage risk (McGivern & Fischer, 2012). Another change is to enable her vent out her anger, achieved by allowing her to speak her mind and through engaging her.

  1. What approaches can you use within the assessment process to enhance collaboration and participation when clients like Carla are at risk?

To enhance collaboration and participation when clients are at risk within the assessment process, nurses can use different approaches. One of the approaches to use is to observe the client (Kleinsmann, Deken, Dong & Lauche, 2012). Observation allows the nurses to understand clients and their experiences hence are able to device suitable way of commencing or kick-starting engagement. For instance, the approach to engage an angry client is not the same with that client who is happy. It is also important to maintain good posture, maintain eye contacts and her hands should be still (Mihm, 2014). This creates a conducive environment for the client to open up (Van der Vegt, Essens, Wahlstrom & George, 2015). The nurse should also create time to assist the client. The nurse should therefore, listen actively to be in a position to respond appropriately to the questions and concerns of the clients.

Underlying cause of Carla’s behavior is lack of someone to give her hope and encouragement. Carla is undergoing or facing numerous issues. She is a smoker and has not been allowed to smoke until the time recommended. This situation is aggravated by the fact that she broke up with her boyfriend. She cannot talk to her boyfriend. Therefore, she has made it a routine to smoke as a strategy to end her anger.

Reflective Essay on Plagiarism

Prior to my attendance of this class, I had come to believe that plagiarism was just another means of making education more rigorous and effort-intensive for students. It thought it was simply put in place to make the academic process so to say ‘steeper’ for participants. The reason for this is the fact that the steps necessary to avoid plagiarism include citation and also list all references.

After this lesson I have however developed a different view of plagiarism as well as expanded my view on what it constituted. I didn’t know for instance that paraphrasing on its own was not sufficient as a means of avoiding plagiarism. A text is still technically plagiarized so long as the author has not made any deliberate effort to recognize the original author of the concepts presented. Rather than complicate academia, the effort against plagiarism is actually meant to ensure fairness in the educational fields and also encourage students to come up with their own material where possible through empirical research or other laid down procedures (Blum, 2011).

Last but not least, I believe it is important to register my concern with respect to the electronic monitoring of plagiarism. The softwares used often give a percentage and different academic institutions impose varying thresholds for their students.  It makes me abit curious about what this implies to the quality of information generated before the widespread adaptation of the internet. The internet’s accessibility also means that the available information is likely to be recycled at a higher rate begging the question about what this will imply for the current systems of plagiarism inspection or investigation.
