I plan to address how specific religious groups can be motivated to vote according to ideology, such as Christians voting in favor of “pro-life” candidates. I will also address cases where issues of social significance might cause religious groups to vote “against” their ideology. Archbishop Timothy Broglio said of President Obama’s 2008 win, “most people did not vote for Obama because of his position on abortion, but in spite of it.” (Duin, Julia. “Catholic Voting Tied to Economy.” Washington Times, The). Obama also received overwhelming Muslim support, despite his position on homosexuality. I also plan to address religion’s impact on public education, especially the ongoing legal battle over creationism in schools. While on the topic of schools, I’d like to spend some time looking at the history and current status of prayer in American schools. I would also like to specifically address some “hot button” constitutional issues. We frame our existence in an ongoing series of complicated rituals that enable our existence physically and give it meaning metaphysically, spiritually and ecumenically. The laws and precepts in the U.S. were largely written by puritanical or at least Puritans white males. While some of our founders may not have fully embraced these ideals, many were, at the very least heavily exposed to the Judeo-Christian value system. In the U.S. many seem to embrace the fact that we have the oldest constitution. I’m not so sure that operating by a document created in 100 working days, 230 years ago is an achievement. Similarly, a dogmatic belief that the Christian Bible, Hebrew Bible, or Muslim Quran, as they exist today, are (respectively) 100% the inspired word of God, would have some interesting and observable effects on your worldview.

Option 1: Imagine three different women, each of whom is trying to obtain a divorce from her
husband. The first is a woman from a poor family living in an Anatolian province of the Ottoman
Empire in the sixteenth century. The second is an Algerian woman living in nineteenth-century
Algiers, then under French-colonial rule, who wants to divorce her husband on the grounds of his
impotence. The third is a Swahili woman in Kenya today, who claims that her husband is
abusive. How would these three women’s experiences in the courtroom vary? In what ways
would they be similar? What do these differences tell us about transformations in Islamic law
over time and in relation to different social and political contexts? And what do their experiences
tell us about gender orders and women’s negotiation with different legal actors and institutions?
Option 2: What is “legal pluralism”? How have polities differed in their management of
religious and legal difference? What is the relationship between Islamic law and legal pluralism?
And how has this relationship changed over time and space? In writing your answer to this
question, you should provide specific examples from the various historical and contemporary
contexts we have studied in this class. Consider the operation of legal pluralism in the Ottoman
Empire, in various semi-colonial and colonial contexts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
and in postcolonial contexts today that include both Muslim-majority and Western-liberal states,
such as Canada.
Option 3: In the last class of the term, we discussed the question, put by University of Toronto
legal scholar, Mohammad Fadel: “Can Islamic law and secular politics co-exist?” In some ways,
this is the latest iteration of a question that Muslims have been asking since the late-eighteenth
century. Another way to put this question is: How should Islamic law relate to modern life and
the modern state? In your response to this question, consider how different actors have
responded to this challenge, from pro-ijtihad reformers like Muhammad Abduh and Jamal ad-
Din al-Afghani, to Westernizing secularists like Mustapha Kemal Ataturk, to modern Salafists
like the Muslim Brotherhood, to Islamic feminists like Kecia Ali and Amina Wadud, and finally
to contemporary scholars like Fadel and Abdullahi Ahmed an-Na`im. Your answer should: lay
out their respective positions in relation to this question, map their relation to each other, and
finally offer some of your own reflections in light of your study of their various positions.

Take one, two, three, or all four Gospels and write out three (3) things that are happening in each chapter.

So, for Matthew you would go chapter by chapter, write out three things in each of the 28 chapters. It would look something like this:

Matthew 1:

1. The Genealogy of Jesus begins with Abraham.

2. Joseph did not want to divorce Mary for being pregnant but an angel told him to anyway.

3. Jesus is born.

Matthew 2:

1. Magi from the east visit King Herod to find where Jesus is.

2, 3….etc……

That’s how I want you to do this. Note that I wrote COMPLETE SENTENCES. So don’t write, “Genealogy of Jesus” but us e a VERB to make it a sentence: “The Genealogy of Jesus begins with Abraham.”

For each Gospel that you complete (no partial credit) you will get an additional 1 point–so 4 points total of you do all four.

Now, here’s a bonus.

I will let you do the same for the book of Acts (1 point) and for 2 of Paul’s letters–Romans and 1 Corinthians (1/2 point each because they are shorter).

Now you have a total of 6 (!!) extra credit points you can earn. That means you can go from a 58% (F) to a 64% (D). Or an 89% (B+) to a 95% (A).
