Design and Distribution Ltd (D2D) underwent a global restructuring which was aimed at keeping the company competitive, and at the same time ensuring that the products and services to its customers were top quality. Before the restructure, D2D was based in five sites with a workforce of 2000. After the review and improvement its processes, the company started operating from a single site with a workforce of 700 (Surendran 2010). The review was a process which involved all the employees, customers and suppliers of the company. The Company noted that to be competitive, profitable and a world-class company, processes should be identified, understood adequately and benchmarks set to ensure that progress is monitored and reviewed periodically.

To embark on the restructuring activity, the top management at D2D identified the processes that needed to be undertaken. Information was collected from various sources including, customers’ data and feedback which aided the identification of faults in their products and service delivery which required to be checked. Understanding that the success of any organization was based on the relationship between the company, its suppliers and the customers, all people involved were well trained on customer care and handling to ensure that all processed were well managed and improved on. By involving all the stakeholders, D2D was able to identify the processes that needed to be worked on, set benchmarks and targets that were agreed across the board and be able to monitor and measure the results across the set targets (Surendran 2010).

The next step was the implementation of the correction processes as agreed by all stakeholders which was to be done within the agreed timescales and the performance measured across the set targets. A methodology on how this was to be done was drawn aided by flowcharts with feedback loops was adopted to ensure that any corrective measures arising at any given stage were able to be re-evaluated and incorporated in the overall process. Policy conformity and standardization with international standards’ bodies were also prioritized to ensure that their products conformed to the international standards. The company got Allied Quality Assurance Procedure 1 registration followed by ISO 9002 Certification by 1988, which along with periodical auditing of the systems by the British Standards Institution ensured that D2D aligned the processes towards the right direction (Surendran 2010).

Evaluation of the impact of the acted upon processes on business was undertaken by the unit heads and the set teams. This was done periodically on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis and the cost of quality versus the performance measured to determine the cost-effectiveness of re-alignment and identify the corrective measures that needed to be adopted. Customer satisfaction levels identified from their feedbacks were also evaluated to determine product performance, and identify action plans that were to be deployed to ensure 100% customer satisfaction (Surendran 2010). Continuous improvement of the performance and quality of the products was made to an everyday activity in the organization with all the stakeholders participating in the process. Continuous review of the performance of the processes was put in-place and a system developed to ensure that the targets were reviewed periodically to come up with competitive, cost-effective processes which in-turn would impact on the profitability of the company. This way the objectives and the strategic goals of the company were achieved.

The model applied at D2D can be applied at any given company to review and improve on the processes and the quality of its products. Customer needs and satisfaction are two very important aspects when it comes to reviewing of performance on any organization as this impact directly on its profitability (Richards 2012). For instance, Microsoft Inc. deployed a process review improvement to check how licensing of its server software by one of its reseller companies, VIGLEN could be tracked and improved (University of Liverpool n.d.). Microsoft had issues with how licensing was being done since the process had become complex and this was resulting to license purchases going unreported or missed by the reseller. The review was aimed at ensuring that the process was streamlined and all the licenses issued and their payments could be tracked. This was achieved by designing a methodology that was adopted the Microsoft Team and involved having clear-cut procedures and identification of processes involved so as to get the desired output. University of Liverpool Process Improvement team worked on the processes and ensured that desirable corrective plans were deployed to ensure that the licensing process could be monitored and tracked by Microsoft. As the same case was done at D2D to achieve profitability in its processes; restructuring of the workforce at the reseller was done by hiring the right people and proper training on the new systems done. Continuous review of the processes in any organization is important as it ensures that the right actions are undertaken to improve on the products and service delivery of the organization. Customer satisfaction, quality products or services and competition are the driving forces behind process review and improvement and any company that aspires to remain profitable should put in place a methodology to achieve the same (Richards 2012).

Basically the first half of this 800 word essay is a summary of the article in the title, and then the second half needs to be a response to a point made in
the article. Here are some instructions from the outline.

Step 2:Read the essay and do your best to understand it. Underline what interests, puzzles, or confuses you; disagree (with your own counter evidence from
the text) when possible. The TAs will lead you through a discussion of the article you have been assigned, so be prepared to participate actively. (I would expect this discussion to happen in tutorials on March 13th and 14th, but ask your TAs; some may want to get a jump on things on March 6th and 7th.)

Step 3:Write the paper.
The paper will be in two parts. The first half should be a summary of the essay you have been assigned to read. This should be largely in your own words. If
you do use a quotation, it should be absolutely necessary. Be sure, though, to attribute ideas to their author by using attributive tags (“Britton argues”;
“Dussinger suggests”). The summary should both give a general gist of the whole essay—highlighting the thesis especially— and focus on some aspect of the essay in particular. That aspect will then provide a context for the response half of the paper. Given that the whole paper is about 2.5-3 pages long, you
might separate the general from the more specific by making each a paragraph.

The response should engage with one quotation from the article specifically, using that quotation as a jumping off point for your own extension or
complication of, or counter to, the scholar’s argument. You must use evidence from Frankenstein (the novel) in your response. If you use the same evidence that the scholar uses in her or his argument, you must be treating it in a different way. Otherwise, you should be using evidence that is not included in the scholarly essay to which you are responding. I would anticipate that this would be approximately two paragraphs, with the first paragraph leading with some kind of argument. The “thesis” thus will not be in its usual position (at the end of the first paragraph), but rather somewhere in the opening sentences of the response.

Words of Advice:
Responding to a scholarly article can be daunting. These are scholars who have devoted their lives to doing this sort of work. They have done extensive
research, often archival, and they undoubtedly know the text well. You are not expected to do any outside research (beyond locating and reading the essay you
have been assigned), so you may wonder how you could counter or extend the scholar’s argument. Your TAs will give you some guidance here, so bring your questions to tutorial, but please note a few cautions:

The most prominent statutes are the Data Protection Act 1998, RIPA and the Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) Regulations 2000, and Article 8 ECHR as incorporated into English law by the Human Rights Act 1998. The Data Protection Act provides for the air and a lawful procession of personal data, as regards the methods by which the data is obtained. RIPA and the Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of Communications) Regulations 2000 provides that all surveillance and monitoring that intrudes into a person’s privacy should be subject to consent and/or notification.  Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights provides for an individual’s right to respect for his private and family life, his home and correspondence. This insinuates that monitoring and surveillance of employees amounts to the violation of privacy rights under Article 8 of the ECHR (Allsop, 2014).

Monitoring employees is always taken to be intrusive. The law tries to ensure that employees have legitimate expectations that their personal lives can remain private and that they have a right to a degree of privacy at work. Employers who intend to monitor their employees should come out clearly on the purpose of the monitoring and they should also show that the chosen monitoring arrangement is capable of delivering real benefits. It is also a legal requirement for employers to provide employees with information as to the nature of the surveillance, its extent and the reasons thereof. This is because their awareness will have a significant impact on their expectations (Allsop, 2014).

The legal issues raised on privacy at the workplace is relevant because it tries to strike a balance between the employer’s right to carry out surveillance in the workplace and at times outside of the workplace and the rights of employees to privacy. Thus, to keep pace with technological developments and the law, it is important for an employer to update employment contracts and policies to ensure that the employees are aware of the nature and extent of monitoring, and the legitimate interests that the employer has endeavored to protect. In all cases, employers need to conduct an impact assessment, and where there is a consideration for covert monitoring, there should be a clear audit trail to show that it was subject to conscientious decision making at the higher level of management. Employers should also carry out monitoring and surveillance to the minimum extent necessary for the achievement of the employer’s aims (Allsop, 2014).

The legal reasons for limitation of monitoring and surveillance of employees at the workplace are in line with the protection of employee’s privacy which can easily be lost in this information age and it can be harmful to the employee. Hence, all levels of management and non-management employees should fully understand and appreciate the ethical implications of their decisions and actions as relates to personal and professional values. Employers, on the other hand, should always make decisions that are less intrusive to employees’ privacy.
