Essay Assignment

The essay must be written in American Sociological Format (ASA) format. The rubric and guidelines will be in the attachments for this essay order.

Purpose: You must now complete the final phase of the writing process by integrating your annotated bibliography research and any feedback received into a final essay. The central aim is to synthesize and integrate your research into a coherent and empirically supported argument.

Topic: This topic examines the intersection between inequality and criminal justice. Inequality can be inequality of class, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and so on. Criminal justice refers to the intersection of one of these topics with some elements of the criminal justice system, such as police, courts, border security, sentencing, corrections, parole, and so on. You should focus on ONE topic (for example, race and sentencing, gender and policing). The aim is for you to choose an axis of inequality and discuss how it interacts with a component of the criminal justice system. You are to make a clear argument in the form of a thesis statement and then support your argument with the material located through your research (library and scholarly database searches). More information will be provided in lecture.

Structure: You are free to structure the paper in any way that helps you to convey your argument more effectively. Headings and sub-headings may be used if appropriate.

Document Parameters: The paper must be 8-pages (12 font, double spaced, 1 inch margins), excluding cover page and references. Failure to adhere to these parameters will result in penalty. Don’t get creative with the font, margins, or spacing.

Citation Format: ASA (American Sociological Association).

Sources: Be sure to cite all sources appropriately. For this assignment you must have a minimum of eight (8) sources. See Annotated Bibliography assignment for source criteria (I recognize that this is two more sources than for the annotated bibliography but the source criteria remains the same). You are of course free to use more than eight sources.

Due Date: Essays must be submitted via the course website by the beginning of class on March 19, 2019. The penalty for late assignments is 2% per day late calculated on a 24 hour turnover beginning after the start of class. Papers more than 7 days late will receive a grade of zero.

Evaluation: The paper is worth 35% of your final grade. See evaluation criteria and grading scheme below.

Each student shall identify a current criminal justice policy which is “broken or badly bent.”

Then, according to his/her respective interest and subject-matter expertise and research will

propose a new or significantly revised policy remedying the “old” policy’s deficiencies.

The instructor must approve these projects. No exact duplicate policy proposals are allowed nor can

student policies exactly duplicate debate topics. Papers should have the following general

outline: (1) thoroughly describes the problem, (2) the history of the problem, other attempts to

solve the problem and (3) the student’s own policy proposal. The policy issue examined must

apply to the national or provincial levels of government—not at the local or agency-specific

level. Please note that you should clearly describe the theoretical framework in which you are

working and provide initial evidence for your theory. I cannot stress the importance of theory enough. A paper with no theory is like a house without a foundation. It might look good, but it falls apart at the first sign of a storm. Furthermore, the theory will help you determine and justify your initial assumptions.

So how should you write a good academic paper? It is as easy as following these steps:

Steps 1: Pick a topic

Step 2: Go to the library and read at least half a dozen relevant peer-reviewed papers on that

topic. You might have to read 20 different papers until you find a good selection of half a dozen

relevant papers. There is a mountain of information out there and although search engines help in

streamlining the information, at the end of the day, you have to go through lots of different

materials until you find a good selection that works for you. A good researcher is one who is

organized and smart.

Step 3:

After having gone through all these paper and now armed with a good set of notes, come up with

one good research question or an argument that you wish to make either in support or against a

particular policy. I suggest coming and seeing me when you reach this stage.

Step 4:

Now divide your research question into 3 sections:

1) Describe the problem

  1. What is the particular policy you are interested in?
  2. Why is this an important policy to discuss?
  3. Why is this a problem?

2) A historical and possibly multinational description of the problem

  1. How has Canada or other countries dealt with the issue before
  2. What are some of the social and political context that is inherent to the problem at

hand?

  1. What are the different solutions that were offered? Why have they failed?

3) The theoretical approach that you wish to take to solve this problem

  1. What is your theoretical approach to the problem?
  2. How can course readings help in this regard?
  3. Come and talk to me if you need more help with this

4) Policy implications and solutions to the problem

  1. What are the policy implication of your theoretical approach?
  2. Why is this better than what we have right now?
  3. What are some possible problems with this approach? How can we mitigate these problems?

gender &/or sexual orientation affect crime portrayal, experience with the system, and
the experience of institutionalization specifically?
To begin, select one of the three questions appearing above in bold. Next, use material from Mod 1 to describe a “type of evidence” or “way of knowing” which you believe would best allow us to answer the question you have selected. Finally, answer the question using course material being sure to critically examine the quality of that answer based on the evidence used in the material you incorporate. FYI, it is fine to blend your 1) answer to the question and 2)
the type of information you believe is appropriate to support the argument you make.

Section Two—APPLYING KNOWLEDGE OF COURSE CONCEPTS: For 30 points, answer the
following making sure to integrate at least 8 of the 16 readings thus far discussed.
Gender Gap: Based on the material presented thus far, offer an explanation for the “gender
gap.” Specifically, after using course material to describe the phenomenon of “gender gap,” I
expect your argument to integrate course material pertaining to both “the structure of
society/crime” (Lorber, Lenning, Belknap, Messerschmidt, etc.) and the bio social approach
introduced in Week 5.
