Police Departments Operation Methods
Police Departments Operation Methods

Complete a term project that consists of visiting a police department and reviewing its

operation. Visit the PD, ask questions pertaining their operations and experiences then write a paper reflecting the PD’s operation methods. Research must also be a component of this project in order to compare what the “experts” determine makes a good police department to the results of your visitation. This can be accomplished by using Police Administration or Police Operations textbooks.

I already visited NYC PD, and asked a few questions. this is what I gathered:

New York city police:

Department total has about 4,000 men working, about 1200 cops patrolling

Lots of female and minorities, better for community policing.

Scheduling rotation: Week of days, week of nights, week of midnights, then every three weeks 3 days off so rotation starts on a different day of the week.

What they most look for in Applicants: go to school, also go searching in low income neighborhoods for diversity.

Thing that sticks most in their mind: death notification, telling loved ones they passed away always stays on their mind for a long time.

Craziest experience on call: high speed chase in which the suspect was accused of armed robbery then fled the scene and the PD went on a wild goose hunt

Thing that should be changed within the agency: Favoritism: good scheduling to those who were favorited, etc.

Why he became an officer: not like everyone else; because financial: 20 years so he could retire. Collect that pension

Would do it all again, diff today because of how hectic the world is but no regrets

It is a Civil service agency

Believes you don’t need to live in the district, easier when u dont live in the district so you don’t have to live where you work, can be annoying for the rest of the family and even dangerous in some cases.

Just practice good community policing to interact with the public a lot so they can feel like they trust you and not hate you.

He is Not crazy about tasers because causes problems, if they see the taser, they will become more hostile and you risk a gun fight/injuring someone

Proudest moment: when he was in charge of drug interdiction program, searching cars for drugs, he had the chance to take take young troopers to do it,teaching them how to talk to people, get consent to search car etc.

Organization: Recruit, trooper, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major,

If u wanna be a trooper Bci- investigator-senior invest,

Body cameras a plus because you get all the evidence you need no problems of police brutality or misconduct etc.

They Practice community policing to avoid hostile work environments. The better you are with them the safer they feel.

Crime rate: 1111.9 per 100,000 residents, most crimes being grand larceny

Current economics affect policing today a lot

Reminder: From Barnet and Bedau – A Word About Wikipedia… Wikipedia often rises to the top of Web search results. This vast and decentralized site provides over a million articles on a wide variety of topics. However, anyone can contribute to the online encyclopedia, so the accuracy of articles varies, and, in some cases, the coverage of a controversial issue is one-sided or disputed. Even when the articles are accurate, they provide only basic information. Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, cautions students against using it as a source, except for obtaining general background knowledge: “You’re in college; don’t cite the encyclopedia.”

Chapter 6: Geographic Data and Crime Mapping

The purpose of this assignment is for you to use interactive online crime mapping systems to create crime maps. Note that some of these web sites allow you to map multiple cities and jurisdictions as they are general companies that have data from a wide range of places (e.g., communitycrimemap.com, crimereports.com, spotcrime.com). Other web sites are hosted by individual cities or police departments (e.g., Chicago, Baltimore, Seattle).

In this assignment, you are to analyze five different websites to create five different maps from different cities. (You will only need to submit one map for this assignment).

Importantly, the point of the assignment is to see the different systems that are available and that can be used to map crime online. To complete this assignment, you will create a map from one of the websites examining all or some of the crime or other available criminal justice data on the site. Be sure to conduct queries that make sense and are interesting to you. It may take more than a few queries to produce usable maps with data. You will complete the following items.

Use the bold headers below for the write up of each map:

•Title: Title the map with the city name, crime data shown in the map, date range covered in the map.

•Image of the map: Copy and paste your map from your desktop into Word. You can use the print screen button on your computer or other editing or “snipping” tools. Crop the image the best you can so only the legend and the map are showing.

•Source: The name of the city hosting the website and the web address

•Description: Include a paragraph describing what is shown on the map with a brief interpretation (i.e., what is it telling you or an average citizen about crime or activity in that city).

•General Impressions: Describe your general impressions about using the site (e.g., ease of use, understandability, quality of maps that you were able to create, etc.).

The format is Intro, organization (how the article is set up), Audience (who the article targets), Exigency (practical or theoretical) and the conclusion (what did you learn). The style is MLA format. My major is Criminal Justice and the topic I want to write about is Criminology. Public media such as TV or newspapers, paired with crime statistics from the authority, raise awareness of crimes within society. However, in today’s digital society, other sources rapidly gain importance as well. The Internet and social networks act heavily as information distribution platforms.

How do you feel the investigative community can overcome these negative outcomes?

QUESTION 2: Discuss, in detail, how technology has evolved over the past 20 years in regards to criminal profiling and forensic science, and the way it is being used successfully today by law enforcement.

Searching and recording the crime scene

Assignment Details

The reason a crime scene search is conducted is to establish the parameters of the crime being investigated and to identify and seize evidence at the scene that will connect the suspect(s) and victim(s) to the scene. It will establish linkage between evidence items and their associative value to each other. It will help identify what actions occurred at the crime scene during the commission of the offense(s). It will also identify items that are missing from the scene or items that are in the crime scene that should not be there. The crime scene process helps identify the methods used (modus operandi) at the scene by the offender(s).

For the purpose of this assignment, you are an investigator on your way to a murder crime scene. Research the following points, and write a 4–6-page paper fully explaining each point:

The new Crime Scene Investigator assigned to work for you has never processed a homicide scene before. While en route to the scene, you discuss with your new partner the details you were given by the dispatcher. You discuss methods of crime scene searching with each other.

You have been provided 2 crime scene sketches. Click here for interior and here for exterior. Determine (based on the sketches) your suggested plans for searching the crime scene(s) in this scenario.
Based on the sketches, signify the areas to be searched and the evidence that might be associated with this crime scene.
If you had other personnel available to assist you and your new partner, what directives and assignments would you provide them with to assist in your crime scene search process?

discussion for this week covers homicide and the experiences/effects of homicide on secondary victims, also known as survivors to homicide victims. Related to homicide, and other violent crimes, we also cover the history, pros, and cons of victim impact statements. Answer the following questions in your discussion post this week:

1. This week we read about and discussed the effects of homicide on secondary victims. Describe two themes identified by the Peterson Armour (2002) study. Did these themes surprise you? What is your reaction to these themes?

2. In lecture and in the reading, I discuss that secondary homicide victims often are isolated from their friends/family and have negative experiences with the police and CJ system. What can be done at the individual, community, and/or institutional levels improve social and systemic responses & post-homicide experiences for these individuals? Provide specific examples from lecture and/or the reading.

3. Do a quick Google search about support resources available to secondary homicide victims. Describe one organization or resource available to this group, including how the services they provide could be helpful and if there are places you see room for improvement.

4. This week we also discussed Victim Impact Statements. While this is relevant to homicide, victim impact statements can theoretically be used in the sentencing of any violent crime. Are you in favor or opposed to victim impact statements? Support your argument with course materials.

Part 2:
Select one of the following scenarios and write a victim impact statement. You need to pretend this crime actually happened to you. Describe the details about the crime, the feelings you experienced, and the harm you suffered. It must be a complete statement about how this crime affected your life.

The victim impact statement should be one page, typed, SINGLE SPACED (minimum). This assignment is worth 10 points. You will be graded on meeting the length requirement (4 points) as well as inclusion of the following elements in a detailed, complete response:

Scenario 3:

You are a survivor to intimate partner violence. Your partner was emotionally and physically abusive toward you for several months until you ended the relationship. He/she continues to call and text you, and sometimes shows up at your work and home, making threats. You’re in the process of filing an order of protection. You plan to read the victim impact statement at your court hearing to secure the order of protection.

Scenario 4:

You are the parent of a 5-year-old child who has been sexually assaulted by a worker at the day care where you leave your child during the day when you work. The offender is on trial for sexual assault of a minor.

Part 3: Make it up please.

Each student will select a topic for their term paper that allows them to explore the wider social context of victimology through a review of existing research and through conducting two interviews with individuals who have been affected by crime. The topic should be something where students can identify relevant scholarly articles to include in the literature review. In addition to topic selection, students will also provide the information for two individuals they intend to interview (i.e., name or pseudonym, how you know them, and how they relate to your topic as an individual affected by the
crime) as well as a list 5 potential questions you will ask each interviewee. For details regarding interviewee selection criteria, topic selection, and requirements of the Term Paper Topic Selection and Plan assignment, see the Term Paper document.Preview the document

video, rational choice theory focuses on offenders weighing the risks versus rewards prior to engaging in a criminal act (Dorsey, 2013). If the risks are low and the rewards are high, the offender will engage in the crime. However, if the risks are high and the reward is low, the offender generally will not engage in the offense. In addition to the aforementioned, the classical school of criminology also contends that punishment is the primary way to deter crime. In order for punishment to be effective, it must be swift, severe, and certain. In your paper,

Explain how crime can be prevented as it relates to the beliefs of the classical school of criminology;

Assess the major components of the classical school of crime causation;

Discuss specific and general deterrence as it relates to the presence of punishment and the challenges to creating deterrence in today’s society; and
