Alignment and Social Change

Introduction

Alignment remains a central element in the current efforts of standard-based and systematic research in psychology. In developing a research study aimed at preventing violence that has turned out to be a public health agenda as a result of the growing rates and effects of violence that exist, it is essential to incorporate effective approaches of evaluating alignment that exists between, data collection approaches and other research mechanisms(Vogt, Gardner, & Haeffele, 2012). These mechanisms include the problem, purpose, research questions, and design.

This paper seeks to evaluate the manner in which an action research in family violence research may be evaluated through the alignment of its, data collection approaches and other components of the research study. On the other hand, the paper will reflect on the contents of the course with the aim of establishing the scope of a newly requisitioned inquiry skill and knowledge may sustain my role in advocating for positive change aimed at addressing the element of family violence.

Approaches of Evaluating Alignment in Data Collection Approaches and other Components of Research

The current world of social sciences remains multidimensional and complex, an aspect that has resulted in different paradigms comprised of different approaches and variations that ensure various components of a research study are tied together, and are suitably aligned with each other (Vogt, et.al. 2012). In order to ensure that the data collection process evaluated to aligned to other elements of a research study that include the research problem, purpose, research questions, and design, it is essential to ensure that the research questions are clear, and are developed to align these components with the method of study and the design.

It is notably vital to note that, the influence between a research study, its question, design or method, and limitations are influenced by the studies questions. The point of this is that the alignment between a research studies component remains in the overall validity of the study (Vogt, et.al. 2012). A research study whose component fails to cohere or align may be considered to have a questionable validity. Whatever a research study used, the research components that include the research problem, design, data collection and analytical methods need to be inclusively aligned with the overall methodology and should cohere with one another.

The Application of the Acquired Research Skills in Positive Social Change

Background of Research Problem

In supporting my role in advocating for an affirmative social change, it would be necessary to incorporate the newly acquired skill in a research study aimed at addressing the element of family violence. Despite several efforts to prevent family violence through the development of interventions, an effective approach of understanding this process is through the inclusion of an empiric research approach in spear heading violence prevention activities, an area of research that is in its infancy.

Considering the fact that violence begins from an early age and ends in negative effects, the prevention of this unethical act needs to start in childhood in order to address this vice across all spheres of life. Following in the footsteps of the current enacted public health efforts in addressing this challenge, the study incorporates empirical data as the foundation of preventing violence through the inclusion of programs.

Many of the violence prevention programs are considered to have no documented empirical evaluation, an aspect that has resulted in inconsistencies in the prevention programs. This study will consequently explore these gaps through the incorporation of research practices by sampling some of the family violence prevention practitioners.

Method

The model of this study was developed through the inclusion of a participatory action research method. This process ensures that an exploration is provided on applying the practice from the standpoint of the key players considered violence prevention practitioners.

Data collection

Upon approval by the Walden University review board, the data collection approach incorporated a twofold approach. The first phase of the process incorporated a purposeful sample of the element of family violence prevention personnel were recruited (N=25) through the use of an open-letter invite, with the sample of the study reporting whites at 50%, females at 80%, and holders of a bachelor’s degree at 45%(Graf, Rea, & Barkley, 2013). The element of diversity and educational background was considered in the process. The second phase of the study incorporated a retention rate of 68% of the original samples used in previous studies (N=18).

Measures

The study incorporated a valid and reliable measure to conduct a study on this process from the perspective of the violence prevention practitioners. An in-depth qualitative interview was developed, with questions established from an extensive review of literature, applied through an open-ended method (Graf, Rea, & Barkley, 2013). In order to increase the study’s validity, a pilot-test was conducted to measure the interview. Participants were required to provide their responses to the questions below:

  1. What are some of the factors that challenge you in applying the element of empirical research to violence prevention programs?
  2. What are some of the elements that encourage you to apply empirical research in your work?
  3. What are some of the empirical research that you ready to inform you on the prevention of violence?

Data Analysis

In analyzing the data, the research identified the positive and negative factors that influence the violence prevention practitioners in their work, an aspect that was achieved through the conversation of all the written and audio data into a spreadsheet in a uniform manner (Graf, Rea, & Barkley, 2013). In order to ensure the study’s validity and to reduce the bias, there was a need to incorporate an independent reviewer.

Results

The study identifies some positive and negative elements that encourage violence prevention practitioners in incorporating the element of empirical research to their work (Graf, Rea, & Barkley, 2013). Some of the positive elements include training on workshops that impact their knowledge on using research in practice, tutorials that provide directions on how to incorporate and apply research in their programs, and peer support in achieving their goals. On the other hand, the negative elements that hindered their inclusion of empirical research in practice include the lack of understanding on how to incorporate research in practice, the complexity of research as a result of technical terminologies, the lack of peer support and funding, and a negative attitude on the use of research in practice.

 Discussion

Considering the fact that the study is empirical, the logic of the samples used need to be congruent with the primary logic of the study, and the developed research questions, an aspect that requires the study’s sample to be made clear. In this case, the size and structure of the study’s sample should be described besides its logic, the method selected, and the claims that are established for the study’s representativeness. In the last face of the study, consideration should be pointed to the response rate, in case a survey design is incorporated. The evaluation process of this study boils down to the question of the quality of data collected that incorporates the element of reliability and validity.

On the other hand, the research study needs to consider and demonstrate that data is collected across the full range of the study’s condition as established in the research questions. This remains important in testing the study’s theory, thus influencing the element of generalizability of the study’s findings. It is in this case essential to establish the manner in which the data is collected and how the findings are arrived at, with the emphasis on the alignment of the study remaining on the research questions. The findings of this study and conclusion are only good as the data collected, thus establishing the fact that quality control of the studies data is essential. The validity of this study determined the manner in which the instruments incorporated measure the findings of the study

The Concept of Strategic Audit of Tesla Motors Inc Sample Answer

Introduction

The concept of strategic audit has attracted a global debate. Experts in the business sectors outline that it is always easy to venture into the same but on the contrary, to make it successfully grow is a real task thereby fostering the need for audit and evaluation.  Nonetheless, both business specialists and intellectuals agree on the importance of the same. Hence, a strategic review is viewed by writers as the assessment of a firm’s tactics as well as business policies with the aim of scrutinizing the flaws and faults so as to spur the excellent growth of the enterprise.

Nevertheless, the paper shall endeavor to do a strategic audit for Tesla Motors Inc. on the current situation of the firm both on performance and strategic posture as well as strategic managers including the board of executives and topmost management. Furthermore, it shall cover external environment entailing essential, task and societal; internal environment comprising of corporate structure, culture, and resources; SWOT analysis of strategic factors, review of mission and objectives. Finally, it examines strategic substitutes and optional strategy, implementation; evaluation and control.

Current Situation: Current Performance and Strategic Posture

According to the firm’s website, it has so far released four models and its whole stock quote of about two hundred and nineteen. Wholly the boards of directors and top administration have so far highly performed to sell the products as well as make them cheaper to the purchasers as outlined in the organization’s goal. Furthermore, Tesla sells their automobiles from their silos as opposed to others that do the same through dealers and distributors (Hirsh, 2014).

On current strategies, it has opened several Tesla have begun their stores on malls whereby even buyers of cloths can see their products. The potential buyers can thus select and order their preferred car model and color thereby reducing time wasted in negotiations as well as having an unsatisfied customer. Based on the scholars’ emphasis, that is bestowing to the world’s controls (Hoffman & Zimbelman, 2009).

Strategic Managers: Board of Directors and Top Management

The strategic role of the board of governors and chief executive officers, according to the firm’s website is to aid in the success of transformation by articulating its importance, arousing the potential interests of the buyers, motivating the staff as well as getting personally involved. Board of Governors has set very tough standards for the company’s directors, officers as well as employees. The Tesla websites alert that there is a prudent liaise control. Furthermore, the board of governors is also entrusted to serve as the link between the firm and shareholders as well as supervising the daily running of the stocks trades (August 2013).

According to the web released by the company, the board of governors has set aside measures to help them fulfill their mandate including together with obedience to the already stipulated method’s rules. Furthermore, empowering workers to open dialogue; cooperate opportunities, reduced inside trading; protection of safety and health, fighting against prejudice and embarrassments; promoting confidentiality; elimination of corrupt dealings; safeguarding the company’s assets. Additionally, following compliance protocols; the set ethics that they govern include conflicts of interests, adhere. All that team is gender balanced, have well-stipulated roles as well as professional training as required by international requirements. Finally, top supervisors and managers are mandated to take charge of various departments (Hirsh, 2014).

III. External Environment: Natural Environment, Societal Environment, Task Environment

Tesla’s aim is to produce an automobile that doesn’t use diesel that pollutes tother Nature; that’s according to the corporation’s Chief executive officer. Also, the societal expectations are catered for through periodic engagement with their representatives, and finally, the task environment is met by the stationed engineers at the enterprise’s malls (Buchanan & Gibb, 2008).

Inside Setting including all business beliefs, assets, and arrangement

According to researchers, the internal environment is very crucial to a strategic audit of any firm. However, Tesla has a well-outlined structure with the top most being the board of directors and junior most being the sales representatives. The entire group is well coordinated, inculcated with a culture of valuing feedback from clients, excellent communication skills, as well as recommended methods of delivery. To add to the list, the firm has resources including updated information technology gadgets, tools as well as sound engineering models (Buchanan & Gibb, 2008).

Strategic analysis, SWOT

The strength of Tesla Motors stem from its diverse innovation in the automobile industry. The electric vehicle manufacturing expertise has resulted in the production of very high quality vehicles that have earned the highest rating in safety provisions. The model S boasts of excellent features that include autopilot, all wheel double drive and free elaborate over-the-air electronic software updates.

The opportunities available for Tesla Motors include widespread adoption of electric vehicles that have created a ready market for Tesla Motors globally.

The strength of the company includes: it only produces electric automobiles as opposed to other firms, it is the first business to build up a whole microelectronic carriage, balanced cord of ethics both for the board of governors and top executive (Tesla Motors, 2014). However, the demerits comprise higher manufacturing expenditure, limited renewing locations and reduced sell-ability due to underdevelopment in many continents (Robins, 2014).

Nevertheless, the firm has prime opportunities to capitalize on for the better good including more demands on electric motors due to fluctuation in oil prices; the globe is moving towards safeguarding the environment from pollutions from smoke thus the need to have electronic machines, the firm can consider using solar panels to replace batteries. Despite all the openings, the company has quite some threats in the ever-changing business world. For instance, stiff competition from larger firms dealing with the same, the electric engine is more expensive than combustion engines (Robins, 2014). The threats include intense competition from lean and efficient multinational companies. The global economic crisis also poses a constant threat to the existence of medium manufacturers that survive on a relatively small margin.

The weaknesses of Tesla Motors include its inability to be repaired in the most market while its durability and longevity are still to be proved. Limited supply chain creates a big problem whenever interruptions in supply chains are registered (Tesla Motors, 2014).

Review of Current Mission and Objectives

According to the enterprise’s website, Tesla’s mission is to move to a sustainable electronic and solar economy from ancient hydrocarbons economy. However, to achieve the mission, vision is also of fundamental significance; to grow the most attractive automobile enterprise in the 21st Century through switching the global to electric vehicles. Moreover, to realize the stated mission, Tesla must do regular strategic audits so as to compete effectively with other giant diesel and petrol firms. The investigation ought to include external, internal, industrial as well as competitive. Therefore, the vigorous evaluation would be able to determine any change in the market demands and policies plus inventions from other surrounding syndicates (Hirsh, 2014).

Deliver self-independent evaluation of financial, supervisory plus job perils and regulate the firms’ board and top management effectiveness. The company shall aid in control professionals so as to minimize hazards, better quality of the whole course so as to enhance better performance in spreading its aims (Buchanan & Gibb, 2008).

Professionals in the same field outline that Tesla additionally has to do the right order of the raw materials, assemble them in the right proportions and dimensions, do vigorous drive tests, invest in advertisements and seek support from the environment agencies. Hence, displaying the merchandise in easily accessible stores, offer after sales services, sell policies to the potential buyers on a serious note are all important assignments. Finally, training company models and Tesla ambassadors, do a collaboration with other developing nations that are promising to be future clients as well as packaging and exposing on billboards (Hirsh, 2014).

The Concept of Strategic Audit of Tesla Motors Inc Objectives

To come up with a sustainable and inclusive procedure that would determine both inside and outside risks that could slow down the successes of the firm’s strategy and goals. (Hirsh, 2014).

To team up together with additional risk management roles to minimize incurring of threats

To systematize findings for regular communications

Legalize internal review booklet with all staff (Hirsh, 2014).

Strategic Alternatives and Recommended

The corporation could consider investing and strategizing in areas where they are most likely to face challenges before they occur like refilling stopovers, spare parts fall outs and breakdowns. Having strategically placed mechanics dealing with wiring and general repairs could also help actualize the strategic plan. Alternatively, do a low-cost electronic vehicle that would give it an upper hand in the flooded and competitive market. Tesla’s is to get into the furthest periphery of the market whereby buyers are ready to cater for premium for their products as well as insurance policies. That would indemnify customers on behalf of the organization so as to save massive expenses of replacements when technicalities arise thereby saving on raw material and manpower (Hirsh, 2014).

After obtaining the aim of making the profit from most admired Roadster model, the demand shot up for its products; thus, the sales were reinvested to create a more pocket-friendly S models that earned the company several international awards according to the corporation’s website. According to the company’s Chief, from the sales, prototypical X was introduced with even reasonable charges. Moreover, the institution plans a launch of a new model in 2017 that shall even attract more customers (Hirsh, 2014).

According to the report, the firm is selling vans directly to the buyers through their showrooms located within the business malls where several people and general public go for daily routine commodities such As watches, clothes, large monthly shopping as well as quick beverages. The strategy is to ensure the potential purchasers freely view the newest models, and their prices are hence influencing their decision. Extra so, they get to see the first gadgets and get advice from the well proficient vendors. Also, by making direct sales, the firm eliminate middlemen such as dealers and brokers who may not in all cases give the accurate information on model quality and prices. Hence, customers shall be preserved from hecklers that stand to defraud them or charge higher prices than the usual prices (Hirsh, 2014).

According to the professionals, investing in employees’ welfare can considerably raise theirs. Hence, Tesla has to have well regularly revised policies of the staffs ethical, health and financial status so as to achieve the strategic plans and objectives. Compensations when injured in the line of duty, methods and criteria of promotion should be well stipulated so as to meet international standards (Hirsh, 2014).

Moreover, having well-structured training guideline will be essential in the realization of the set aims. Board of management should offer routinely upgrading that cover on the role of manufacturers and people in environmental health, globe ethical standards, and federal laws safeguarding her tax contributors in their respective countries. When done, general know how shall exponentially grow on customer relations thereby substantively skyrocketing demand (Buchanan & Gibb, 2008).

Implementation

According to the firm CEO, the important factors that could affect actualization of the strategic plan are an outline of the business, clients, leadership, and organization systems plus procedure. Just to start up the discussion, the firm structure should constantly always be accurately revised and examined whether it is helping achieve the outlined objective; necessary measures like reducing the number must be taken when necessary. The procedure should smoothen communication modalities from seniors to juniors since any interference with the flow shall adversely affect operations and service delivery. On the other hand, customers shall also have sound and accessible mechanisms of relaying their issues such as placement of order, selection of model, compliments and complaints thereby give them a sense of satisfaction (Hirsh, 2014).

Writers stress that Tesla to achieve these, organization goals must be all translated into action objectives. Without which all the strategic plan shall be tendered into are to little paperwork; all managers, stake holders, as well as a technical team, must channel their efforts towards the general good of the firm by all means needed to remain relevant in the market (Robins, 2014).

Evaluation and Control

The managers of Tesla Motors must make sure that the enterprises implementation strategic plan are occasionally reevaluated by comparing with the previous years or other competing companies like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota so as make current decisions such as the type of model to be released, prices as well as the date. Always make necessary amends to the structure together roles so as to be at par with the current market trends. To borrow from the corporation’s history, in by 2013, the firm planned to make and sell SUV-X model and sell it by 2014, however, when the strategic evaluation was done; the launch was postponed to the last half of 2015 ( White, 2013).

The Concept of Strategic Audit of Tesla Motors Inc Conclusion

To sum it up, from the above details, discussions, and scrutiny, it is evidenced that sound strategic audit is of practical importance to every organization that would wish to grow to an international level. Tesla Motors hence has well formulated an achievable flowing business plan and based on the audits it is doing well. To prove that, the organization developed a very attractive and expensive model which the author retaliates caught the attention of the national government and buyers. After which, the company began to grow even more expensive makes which gave them divers kinds of awards from that came along with money acknowledgments thus, according to Tesla’s website, the ministry provided the substantial incentives which helped make the debts. The firm had a comprehensive tactic to excel. Nevertheless, there is the need to control periodically and evaluate all the processes about the new models despite previous successes so as to consistently minimize the chances of incurring unnecessarily loses.

Epistemology is one of the basic hypothesis, along with ontology/methodology/others, to discuss philosophy and the starting point to construct any nature/science research. Epistemology explores topics like what is the nature of knowledge/fact, how are they acquired, the boundary between experiential/critical knowledge and what is the criteria to evaluate knowledge (Harmon & Mayer, 1986). Various concepts are drawn upon to address these topics. For example rationalism, empiricism and criticism are used to discuss the nature & source of knowledge, idealism & realism to discuss the very existence of object that knowledge interacts with (how do we know what we know) and dogmatism, skepticism & positivism to sense the boundary of acquiring knowledge (is it possible to have knowledge at all). By contrasting & discussing epistemological stance certain knowledge constructs its theory upon, more critical understanding of the limitation & possibility of the knowledge/authors can be acquired (Easterby-Smith, et al, 2008)

Management & business research focuses on the applicability of certain theory. Since such research is built upon established theory/knowledge (standing on the shoulder of giant), originality is mainly claimed through critical understanding of the limitation & possibility of the researched theory/knowledge, which marks the difference with doctoral thesis where contrition to theory of or even creation of new theory is required. Such requirement connects the formulation of a management research problem with the critical examination/evaluation of epistemological stance towards the authors of particular theory as well as the researcher itself. Having similar epistemological stance between theory author & researcher, for example both believes in knowledge empiricism & objects realism and use social constructionism model, might lead to similar composition of the researcher’s management & business research & produces similar observation/results, which may not satisfy the expectation of originality, applicability and creativity for master level student. In this sense, understanding the epistemological stance both parties take can potentially help the researcher to balance the objectivity of the research by carefully reviewing discussions (supports & criticism) upon the theory researched and acquire in-depth view of the history, contribution, limitation & future trend of certain theory. The author can then base on its own epistemological stance to decide what & how it wish to access the theory itself: Will it choose to support, argue, or neutralize (seeking common ground) different epistemological stances of certain theory that may ultimately lead to new discovery of its applicability.

My research interest is operation model simulation’s applicability in complicated situation (like demand planning & forecasting or factory operation) where human interventions happens a lot. And i see this topic offers an interesting perspective with its epistemological stance embedded between two concepts mentioned by Easterby-smith, et al (2008): social constructionism & positivism. Whilst operation model simulation is a computer science based theory that believes in the connection between data and consequences (a reflection of positivism), demand planning & forecasting/factory operation to a very large extent is an interaction involves multiple stake holders on the supply chain where collective intelligence is valued (a reflection of social constructivism). In fact this observation goes beyond the operation modeling itself but to the underpinned philosophy of supply chain management framework: How to balance various parties’ interest and seek to maximize the efficiency of the supply chain and minimize the cost. Positivism usually offers a starting point from a data mining & phenomenon understanding stand point but when investigation goes deeper social constructivism comes into play from a knowledge/expertise/interest interaction stand point between various parties. From my own experience in managing both, i believe in seeking a common ground between positivism & social constructivism will offer benefit to operation improvement. This might also reveal certain prospect of human-machine interactive relationship into the future.

Epistemology: Reply

In this post, the student is spot on by stating that epistemology is one of the fundamental hypotheses, along with ontology and methodology, for discussing philosophy and is in fact the basis for constructing science or nature research. Generally, methodology is concerned with the research techniques and tools, and ontology focuses on people’s suppositions with regard to the nature of things and how the world is made up (Burrell & Morgan, 2011). Conversely, epistemology is concerned with people’s beliefs with regard to how a person may discover knowledge regarding the world (Harmon & Mayer, 1986). In essence, epistemology is a core area of philosophy that is focused on the limits, sources as well as nature of knowledge; this is something which the student has rightly pointed out in the post. To add on what the student has stated in the post, epistemology focuses on issues to do with the creation as well as dissemination of knowledge (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe & Jackson, 2012).

In addition, the student’s area of research interest, which is the applicability of operation model simulation in complicated situations where there is a great deal of human interventions, is actually an exciting area of research. This topic is really fascinating since it will allow the researcher to delve into the twin concepts of positivism and social constructivism which embed the epistemological standpoint. While positivism offers the basis from a phenomenon and data mining view, social constructivism offers understanding from a knowledge, expertise or interest interaction stance between different parties. Finding a common ground between social constructivism and positivism may present benefit to operation improvement, and may as well allow the researcher to determine particular prospect of human-machine interactive relationship (O’Gorman & MacIntosh, 2015). As such, the topic which the student identified will be a very interesting one to look into.

Introduction

Workplace safety will entail all the practices that help in the prevention of illnesses and also injury to the workers. The protection of the wellbeing of the employees will ensure they are not subjected to the high costs of the health insurance benefits. The medical cost will help enhance the workplace safety for the employees as they will not have any troubles safeguarding their health to the maximum. The potential job hazards will first be analyzed to ensure the full protection of the workers. The model to be used in the promotion of workplace safety will be made possible through the training and buddy systems that eliminates the high susceptibility to health hazards. The training and education model will efficiently help eliminate work fatalities, reward and promote safe practices.

The training and awareness creation model will be measured using various factors to determine its effectiveness in the workplace. These factors have led advancement in the workplace. The lower payment of medical benefits is one measurement factor and improvement in a given workplace. The reduction in the injury frequency among the employees is a vital advancement in the workplace through the effective workplace safety training model. The lower employee compensation costs and reduction in treatment frequency will result due to the enhancement of the workplace safety through the education and training model which will also contribute to the health promotion in a given firm or company.

Health promotion has become very essential in today’s life. Health promotion is encouraged as it enables people to have more control over determinants health and their wellbeing in a more efficient manner (Tones et al, 2013). The effort to increase the control leads to the overall improvement in the health of individuals. The primary practices and efforts to ensure effective health promotion are made possible through addressing health prerequisites. The health system is a major factor that influences the health of individuals. The family patterns, communication, learning environments and also cultural societies are other factors that influence health. In this case, the holistic approach to individual empowerment should be adopted for the effective address of the many health issues (Tones et al, 2013). The health promotion concept builds on the cultural and social awareness of health and its determinants.

Health education is a major health promotion component. Both have the objective of improving the access to services and the health related information. Health education that aims at improving the health and wellbeing of people will entail the dissemination of information, skills and also the simple health facts to the relevant people that are the society (Rongen et al, 2013). Health literacy is also vital when it comes to the improvement of primary and community health because of its positive impacts. Health education aims at ensuring efficient health literacy among people by giving them the ability to control their well-being for the better through adherence to the information disseminated by them regarding their health (Rongen et al, 2013).

Health education is one factor that that has led to the health promotion and improvement which will include both the primary and community health. Health education will be the practice that entails the dissemination of information to people in the matter to do with health. The profession of health education will encompass social health, spiritual health, physical health and also the environmental health of the individuals (Street et al, 2013). Health education influences the restoration, promotion and also the maintenance of health in a positive way. Health education has several concepts that have a major impact on the improvement and promotion of health. Some of these key concepts are health promotion, social justice, health determinants and also resilience. Health determinant concept will influence the achievement of well-being for the society and also mitigate the effects of the others. The social justice concept will entail the promotion of nondiscriminatory practices, inclusiveness and also fairness (Street et al, 2013). In this case, it is vital to ensure the people are educated on ways of enhancing social justice while carrying out their health practices. The nurse is one group of people that can be educated and made aware of the importance of social justice and its impacts on society and wellbeing of individuals (Rongen et al, 2013).

Resilience is an important concept that is explored while carrying out the health education practices. Resilience is simply the bouncing back capacity from adversity as the life events also have an impact on wellbeing. Resilience been a concept of health education will involve enhancing protective factors and also addressing the different heath risk factors. In such instances when resilience is considered, people are informed on the significant ways of improving and supporting wellbeing among people (Golden et al, 2012). Critical thinking and taking action is also emphasized during health education as people are made aware of the factors that contribute to the improved health. People are taught on how to make quality decisions that are efficient in the handling of the challenging health situations. Critical thinking concept will be helpful in ensuring one efficiently challenges the societal related health perceptions, understanding and also practices that will eventually lead to better health outcomes (Golden et al, 2012).

Health education plays a major role in the improvement of health and its outcomes. Health educators ought to take the initiative and disseminate the information to all people in the most appropriate way as there is an excellent relationship between health education concepts and health promotion (Perez et al, 2013). Learner involvement and also the participation of the community are vital shared principles of health education. Health educators usually emphasize on the importance of health promotion. The community is made aware of strategies of handing the health dangers and also acquiring the necessary information about the illnesses. Health promotion will only be successful if there is the quality dissemination of the necessary information to the community (Perez et al, 2013). The information and skills enhance the making of quality decisions related to the health matters.

Learning that occurs through the health education is the effective communication that is aimed at improving knowledge, health literacy and also the development of skills that enhances the improved community health as well as the primary health of the individuals(Sorensen et al,2012). Health education relates to primary, and community health is not leaving out health promotion which is the major objective of educating people. Health education will reshape the daily habits of individuals with unhealthy lifestyles on top of providing the basic health knowledge and also prevention measures that should be adopted (Sorensen et al, 2012). The necessary information instilled in people through health education will by far reduce the health risks to people after the implementation of the practices taught to the people.

Empowerment is another vital concept of health promotion and the betterment of primary and community health in general. Empowerment is a central principle when it comes to the health promotion of individuals and also at the community level (Schwazer, 2014). Empowering people will give them the more control over their health and also their lives. Empowerment will entail combating injustice through oppression in a process where people work together to increase control over things that influence their health and wellbeing. The health empowerment will encompass the environmental, system and also organizational change. The empowerment model will address the issues that inhibit the making of informed health choices. Numerous empowerment programs have been designed and used to improve the people’s health outcomes (Schwazer, 2014). The empowerment strategies have been used to reduce the health impacts that deteriorate the condition and well-being of the human beings.  The health empowerment interventions have improved the outcomes that are health related. Some of the areas where these strategies have been employed are identified as increased awareness and knowledge, improved self-esteem and efficacy, a greater sense of community and also behavior change (Korda & Itani, 2013). Health promotion occurs through the empowerment strategies that occur in various ways.

It is the role of empowerment to reduce the health disparities and also social exclusion which are major inhibitors the improved primary and community health. When the individuals and community are empowered, they collaborate to create some positive changes and challenge the system for the improvement of the health outcomes which consequently leads to health promotion (Korda & Itani, 2013). The empowerment concept has several roles when it come health promotion. These roles include the broadening of support and social network, increasing awareness and enhancing behavior change. These empowerment interventions are factors of health promotion that lead to improving primary and community health (Korda & Itani, 2013).

Health literacy is another important concept of health promotion. Health literacy will efficiently describe the range of outcomes to communication activities as well as health education. The health education strategies have the objective of improving the health literacy of the individuals. Improved health literacy is essential to the empowerment of people. Health literacy will make people have the ability to use effectively the information they have assessed through various channels such as health education (Murray et al, 2013). Health literacy concept will entail the adoption of strategies that help people overcome the structural barriers to health. The community-based educational outreach and also the better communication personal forms are emphasized as they ensure the individuals are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge defined as health literacy (Murray et al, 2013). The health literacy will empower people to act in the proper way in the many challenging and changing health circumstances. It is only made possible through the use and adoption of the social and cognitive skills.

The major concepts and attributes of health literacy include comprehension, numeracy and reading skills, the capacity to efficient use information to make some informed decisions about the effective functioning (Sorensen et al, 2012). The health related experience and also literacy are the main factors that influence the positive health outcomes. Health literacy concept is related to health promotion due to the impact it has on the improvement of health among individuals. Some of the impacts of health literacy that lead to health improvement include less use of the healthcare services, lower healthcare costs, reduced hospitalization cases and also the improved health status of the individuals and the community at large(Pakkari,2012). Health literacy will enhance the ability to adhere to the healthcare recommendations among the patients and also the improved ability of nurses to assess the patients more accurately (Murray et al, 2013).

Conclusion

Accessing the up to date information is vital when it comes to the making of quality choices and decisions related to health. Improving the health literacy is a major way of empowering the people to deal with the health challenges that threaten their wellbeing (Tones et al, 2013). All these strategies and efforts are aimed at increasing control over the life of individuals as well as their health. In this case, health promotion will be possible when the various health initiatives are adopted and implemented in an efficient manner.

Organization Project – 2: Managerial Decision Making

Introduction

Every business decision has a moral or ethical dimension since it has an effect on the company’s stakeholders (Robbins & Coulter, 2010). In this paper, some of the main decisions which the management of Wells Fargo bank has faced over the past 2 years are described in detail. An ethical issue which this company has faced within the past two years is also described. An analysis of how the ethical was resolved or should be resolved is provided basing on the materials reviewed on ethical decision making.

Key managerial decisions in the past 2 years

Over the past 2 years, the top management of Wells Fargo bank has made a number of key managerial decisions. Firstly, in order to improve sales and revenue for this financial institution and increase value for shareholders, Well Fargo’s senior executives in the year 2014 put tremendous sales pressure on the company’s staff members. The management also launched Wells Fargo’s going for gr-eight initiative which pushed the bank’s average client to have 8 dissimilar accounts. As a result of this initiative, Wells Fargo’s bankers were pressured to victimize clients or else face consequences such as getting fired for being unable to achieve sales quotas (Zacks investment research, 2015). Ethical decision making is the process in which the decision-maker assesses the ethical implications of a given course of action. In making the managerial decisions, Well Fargo’s top executives certainly did not assess the ethical implications of their decisions (Hartman, 2011).

Ethical issue that Wells Fargo has faced

In the year 2015, an ethical issue that Wells Fargo bank faced was treating its clients and staff members in an unethical manner. This financial firm was accused of setting unrealistic and unreasonable sales targets for its workers and encouraging its employees to adopt fraudulent means to meet the preset quota. Staffs at this corporation assumed deceitful tactics in achieving the stipulated impractical sales targets, for instance by issuing illicit credit cards, opening illegal and needless customer accounts, and forging signatures of clients and charging fees on accounts of clients who are unaware. When they got complaints from customers pertaining to this matter, Wells Fargo refunded such fees only in part and not in full, and it then misstated the phone numbers of those clients so that they are not reached for client satisfaction surveys. Furthermore, the senior managers of this bank did not protect the bank’s clients from the financial harm when they found out about the violations by their employees (Zacks investment research, 2015).

This issue has not yet been resolved by Wells Fargo. The case of Wells Fargo bank is a clear illustration of poor decision making in which the bank’s management made poor ethical decisions. For this issue to be resolved in an effective manner, it is recommended that Wells Fargo should reimburse its customers the fraudulent fees which it charged them and secondly, Wells Fargo should discontinue such unethical and deceitful practices in the future. Wells Fargo should focus on the best interest of its clients and create an ethical, caring and supportive environment for its employees and team members. Non-existent or weak governance structures at Wells Fargo resulted in poor ethical decision-making (Hartman, 2011). As such, Wells Fargo’s management should put in place effective business controls and oversight at all times. The managers should understand ways of leading ethically (Robbins & Coulter, 2010). Furthermore, people in this bank should learn ways of resisting to act in an unethical manner.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Wells Fargo’s senior management encountered an unethical issue when they pressured the employees to achieve impractical and unrealistic sales targets. As a result of this pressure, the bank’s employees utilized fraudulent tactics to attain the impossible targets. This ethical issue is yet to be resolved properly. A straightforward and practical solution is for this bank to pay back its customers the fraudulent fees which it charged them and cease its fraudulent practices in the future.

Article 1

In this article, the student is spot on by stating that in the management of a company’s strategic initiatives, the project manager should link the objectives of the project to the company’s overall vision, mission and goals by initiating a strategy as this would help the organization attain its goals and objectives.  Schmidt (2010) pointed out that each project has to support the strategic plan of the organization. To ensure this linkage – that is, to ensure that every project in a company actually contributes to the company’s strategic plan –, projects should be integrated within the organization’s strategic plan and this integration necessitates a process that can be used to prioritize projects based on their contribution to the strategic plan. In the discussion post, the student is also right by revealing that the project strategy translates into the strategic plan of the organization. An organization’s effectiveness and efficiency is very likely to improve when the project manager properly aligns the project objectives with the organization’s overall goals, vision and mission (Gale, 2013). This is something which the student has rightly articulated in the post.

Article 2

In this discussion post, the student eloquently and accurately stated that the mission of a company is a potent driving force that steers the company forward and that a key role of the project manager is to ensure that every project actually aligns to the organization’s mission and key strategic initiatives. To add on this point, projects are the tools that are used to implement an organization’s strategy. Effective project management should start with choosing and prioritizing those projects which actually support the strategy and mission of the organization (Purushottam & Rwelamila, 2011). The priority system has to focus attention on the organization’s major goals and mission and foster consensus to which projects are of the greatest priority. In essence, it gives rise to a portfolio of projects which balance opportunities and threats and provide a better resource usage (Morris & Jamieson, 2012). In addition, the student has rightly pointed out that if the project is not aligned with the organization’s mission and key initiatives, then the projects are likely to fail. Moreover, the company’s mission and key initiatives may not be attained without the alignment.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The critical appraisal refers to the analysis of the peer reviewed articles done for specific purposes. In nursing, this is mainly done for three main reasons including improving of practice, to broaden the student understanding and nursing knowledge about evidence based practice (Burns & Grove, 2011).  During this assessment, the student must put the following into considerations including the study findings and their appropriateness in nursing practice as well as other situation. This helps guide the student on further pilot studies that needs to be conducted to assure effectiveness and safety of the paediatric patients. This is important it facilitates in identification of the   potential changes that positively influence of the nursing practice (Maltby, 2010).

To help me in synthesizing these skills  that are important in when conducting research in nursing practice, I will critically appraise the following  qualitative peer reviewed article Racine, E., Larivière-Bastien, D., Bell, E., Majnemer, A., & Shevell, M. (2012). Respect for autonomy in the healthcare context: observations from a qualitative study of young adults with cerebral palsy. Child: Care, Health and Development, n/a-n/a. doi:10.1111/cch.12018.  The article problem statement, purpose of the study, research question and literature view, and conceptual theoretical framework will be critically appraised (De Chesnay, n.d.).

Problem Statement

The aim of the study is to evaluate the healthcare provider’s roles in respecting patients suffering from the cerebral palsy autonomy. This is important because individuals with disabilities in healthcare face diverse ethical and social issues that are very important (Maltby, 2010). This includes communication issues, disparities in accessing the basic services such as routine care or even preventive care as well as the infringement of the patient confidentiality and autonomy.  The article describes this is particularly important for these patients because it affects the patient’s cognitive ability (Racine et al., 2012).

The article describes the pre-understanding of the issue and its relevance in paediatric care. Additionally, the article describes holistically the concept of nursing, its practice as well as its importance in respecting patients’ rights and confidentiality when delivering quality care, irrespective of the patient’s health complication, gender, age or ethnic background (Racine et al., 2012).  The knowledge gap in this research problem is that transition of paediatric care to adult care in patients with cerebral palsy is complicated, due to the autonomy issues associated with shifts medical decisions to the adolescent (Racine et al., 2012). This is especially a challenge in adolescents diagnosed with cerebral palsy during this transition period. This is because the impairments of the motor and the communication skills that could become conflated with the patients cognitive disability.  This is hinders effective delivery of care and increases the costs of treatment (Racine et al., 2012).

Purpose and Research Questions

The purpose and research questions are clearly stated, and the research purpose and research question are related. The research question is ‘what are the perspectives of autonomy for adults diagnosed with cerebral palsy (Racine et al., 2012)?

To answer this research questions, the researcher carried out semi-structured interviews with 14 participants aged between 18-25 years, and those who suffers from cerebral palsy. The researcher also audiotaped the interviews. This study design applied in this type of research is the phenomenological qualitative design. The study sampling technique that is used is the purposive sampling technique (Racine et al., 2012). The data collected was transcribed by verbatim and was analysed using the conventional thematic qualitative content analysis (Burns & Grove, 2011).   This sampling approach is important   for this type of study, because it facilitates the investigation of the experiences of the young people as well as the healthcare provider’s autonomy. This also facilitates the attainment of the information redundancy.  The study reliability and validity was maintained through the use of triangulation. This reduced study bias (Maltby, 2010).

Literature Review

Literature review is summative and conjoined with the introduction. The researcher merely reports other studies findings in a narrative form with no critique   However, literature review has information that is adequate enough to construct a logical argument (Burns & Grove, 2011). The literature review summarizes the current knowledge that is relevant to research questions and research purpose i.e. valuing the experiences of in paediatrics diagnosed with cerebral palsy and in ensuring that patient’s autonomy is maintained, especially in children diagnosed with long term and severe infections (Racine et al., 2012).  The author has utilized quantitative and qualitative studies that focus on autonomy in paediatric patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The references used are current starting from 2006 to 2011. However, the researcher has also used studies from previous studies, older than 5 year which is applied for qualitative studies purposed (Racine et al., 2012).

Conceptual / Theoretical Framework

The author identifies a specific perspective in which the study was established.  This is the fact that if the issue of autonomy is contextualised in healthcare, it will improve the quality of care. According to the article, ill adapted health, lack of adequate resources and attitudes towards as well as the increased parental involvement could positively or negatively impact autonomy (Racine et al., 2012). Theoretical framework is not well described, but the author mentions Dynamic Systems Theory (DST), which described the development of the patient’s motor and cognitive functions (Racine et al., 2012). The article describes that the subsystems spontaneously self-organize and interact collectively in a specific manner, which enables identification of the most possible solutions for management of patient’s autonomy. Therefore, the healthcare providers should evaluate and consider all aspects of the theoretical aspects to understand the interaction between various aspects including environments, family and service user (Racine et al., 2012).

Conclusion

This paper helps in improving nursing care especially in paediatric care for chronic conditions.  It is vital to identify the gaps in these transitions from paediatric to adult health, which EBP highlights the poor outcomes as well as the diminished opportunities for the service users. More research should be conducted to ensure smooth transitions that will foster autonomy and prepare the young adults transition effectively. This helps improve the lifelong function and establishment of appropriate healthcare services that are uninterruptable during the transition from childhood, adolescence into adulthood.

This paper is on the chapter 1(The Theory of Thin Slices:How a Little Bit goes a long way) of Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Blink” (pg 18 – 47)

5 pages in length (double spaced, 1? margins and 12 pt fonts).

Professors requirement:
Structuring a Critical Analysis Paper
Most critical analysis papers begin with a short summary of the work and then dive in to the argument. Since most of these paper assignments are short, it is important to be concise in all parts of your analysis. Writing an outline (and following it) is crucial to remain focused on your argument and avoid summary or irrelevant description.

The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody’s work (a book, an essay, a movie, a painting…) in order to increase the reader’s understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer’s opinion or evaluation of a text. Analysis means to break down and study the parts. Writing a critical paper requires two steps: critical reading and critical writing.
1. Identify the author’s thesis and purpose
2. Analyze the structure of the passage by identifying all main ideas
3. Consult a dictionary or encyclopedia to understand material that is unfamiliar to you
4. Make an outline of the work or write a description of it
5. Write a summary of the work
6. Determine the purpose which could be
o To inform with factual material
o To persuade with appeal to reason or emotions
o To entertain (to affect people’s emotions)
7. Evaluate the means by which the author has accomplished his purpose
• If the purpose is to inform, has the material been presented clearly, accurately, with order and coherence?
• If the purpose is to persuade, look for evidence, logical reasoning, contrary evidence
• If the purpose was to entertain, determine how emotions are affected: does it make you laugh, cry, angry? Why did it affect you?
Consider the following questions: How is the material organized? Who is the intended audience? What are the writer’s assumptions about the audience? What kind of language and imagery does the author use?

Malcolm Gladwell – Thin Slices (Analysis paper)

Summary

This paper focuses on chapter one, ‘The Theory of Thin Slices: How a Little Bit of Knowledge Goes a Long Way’ of the book link: The Power of Thinking without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. Basically, there is introduction of the ‘thin slicing’ idea. That is, taking very minute details of a person or thing and utilizing that thin slice for developing a bigger opinion of her, him, or it. More specifically, there is a focus on Psychologist John Gottman’s research. Gottman is from the University of Washington. Gottman established the standing of being in a position to establish with a ninety percent accurate rate if a particular marriage will last. He accomplished this by observing couples for not more than fifteen minutes (Gladwell, 2005).  In addition, Gottman also trained the assistants he had in the Love Lab to swiftly code facial expressions as well as tones so that the underlying messages which spouses sent to one another could be determined. Of course, the couples sent different messages including those related to defensiveness, disgust, anger, contempt, and neutrality subconsciously. Therefore, Gottman and the assistants never study the words of the couples practically as much as the gestures and reactions are studied. Gladwell provides other effective thin slicing examples in the chapter. For example, strangers who have never been friends before can be able to identify someone’s personality more accurately based on a fifteen minutes assessment at her or him in a dormitory.

Thesis

When faced with big challenges, people can apply the finding the simple findings from Gottman’s experiment.

Purpose

This chapter is very vital considering that the research by Gottman helps in establishing the view that people never really need to be familiar with a lot of aspects about someone to establish the personality of that person.

Means of accomplishing the purpose

Through the experiments, Gottman aimed to make evident the fact that our mind are continuously searing for patterns. Therefore, when interacting with or meeting a person for the first time, the mind is normally very keen to notice any patterns or repeated indicators of who the new person really is. This is despite the fact that there might be very little information available. Basically, what Gottman was doing is trying to fully make use of this ability through the simple patterns on his machine. If people are aware of the amazing ability that they have, then they would be more aggressive in using it to know the real truth about new people.

The main ideas

The chapter has a lot to teach about couples in marriage. Without doubt, married couples fight once in a while. In essence, no couple that really loves each can go a year without quarreling, fighting, or arguing. Many of them even fight as if they want to murder each other. Nonetheless, after the two go for a vacation together, they return as newlyweds would. When couples fight or argue with each other, the reasons can differ and range from serious to small matters. After a while, the couples reach a point where once again, they are lovely and happy. In connection to this, the relationships of couples can be demonstrated in the form of graphs, where there are the usual up and downs based on their emotions. This mainly points to the idea that love is quite complex to the extent that it requires considerable time to closely learn about the relationship status of the couple. Indeed, so as to be able to predict a thing like marriage, people would really need to be familiar with many aspects of the partner (Carrиre & Gottman, 1999).

Nonetheless, psychologist John Gottman has proven that people never really have to engage in all this. At one time, he did an experiment on 3000 married couples in a small room, which is called a love lab. This was close to the Washington university campus. There was videotaping of each couple, and the results were analyzed using a machine. There are several numbers on this machine and specific numerals are related to particular emotional status. For instance, 1 is for disgust, 2 for contempt, 7 for anger, 10 for defensiveness, 11 for whining, 12 for sadness, 14 for neutral and many others. In the analysis is included other facial expressions and physical motions. For example, if the result is 7, 7, 14, 10, 11, 11, this implies that one person was angry briefly, then neutral, there was an instance of defensiveness, and later, whining started (Gladwell, 2005).

This experiment makes it evident that according to Gottman, there is something remarkable. He proved that analyzing the conversation of a couple for sixty minutes can forecast with ninety five percent accuracy if the two will remain married fifteen years to come. In addition, Sybil Carrere who was working with Gottman also established that it was still possible to forecast with fairly exact accuracy to determine who was more likely to have a divorce or not by only assessing carefully three minutes of the conversations that couples have.

Many would greatly agree that the idea of finding the marriage destiny of a person by examining the conversations he or she is having with the partner is just brilliant. The author has a keen reference to a critical rapid cognition part referred to as thin-slicing (Gladwell, 2005). Through this reference, the author intends to make people aware of their unconscious’ ability to establish patterns in behavior as well as situations based on considerably narrow experience slices. Basically, I think that the author is warning people getting into relationships to be particularly keen so as to note any cues or the slightest indicators of being bored with the relationship, losing interest, or lacking interest. There is a strong assertion that our brains are unconsciously searching for patterns, despite the fact that there might be very limited information. I strongly believe that Gottman was making efforts to take full advantage of this ability through the simple patterns on the machine. Nonetheless, I have a strong belief that out rapid cognition or thin-slicing is reliable.

Many times, people’s words and emotions might be influenced by stresses in other parts of their lives. For example, if facing financial difficulties or the extended families’ burdens’, many men tend to reflect such stresses on their spouses or children, and this might obscure the results given by the machine. The unreliability of the machine’s findings is based on the fact that there is inadequate information to make the conclusions, and particularly within the short span. Moreover, how precise the findings are is doubtful. According to the book, when people’s unconscious indulges in thin-slicing, then what is actually happening is a robotic accelerated unconscious account of all that Gottman does with the equations and videotapes. Therefore, many people are bound to wonder how marriage can be understood with a single setting. Regardless of how doubtful the machine experiments might seem, there have some truth. People can actually handle such complicated situations (Carrиre & Gottman, 1999). Because of this, very many couples are able to marry and live together in the absence of any unfortunate divorces. Therefore, the experiment by Gottman was mainly aimed at showing us that this is possible, as well as how it can be done. Through learning about thin-slicing, individuals around the globe can universally the simple knowledge when encountering huge challenges.

Therefore, thin slicing can assist in solving all the situations that life throws at us. Following the observation of small interactions, it is possible to come up with accurate conclusions. This can be compared to the saying that one does not have to take the whole pie so as to know how it tastes (Gladwell, 2005). There is also the idea that we only have a single chance of making the first impression. The first impression a person makes is usually very hard to be erased. The horsemen of marriage; contempt, criticism, stonewalling, and defensiveness are very intriguing. With these, the marriage can barely last fifteen years, especially if contempt is prevailing.

Preparing for the Practicum

I will start searching for a practicum in the second semester so that I can dedicate the succeeding summer to it. Factors that I would consider when searching for it include my preferences for different organizations as well as different content areas. However, I will emphasize more on the preference for organizations rather than the content area as the approach would help me stay open-minded by not seeking to specialize too early, and instead, gather experience in multiple aspects. Again, I will consider my professional strengths and weaknesses and look for a site where I would improve on my shortcomings while at the same time I would be enhancing my strengths.

So as to secure my preferred practicum site, I will first ensure that I read thoroughly the requirements of the organizations of interest and fulfill them. I will familiarize with possible practicum sites early enough so that I can gain substantial knowledge about them. I will then contact my practicum coordinator to whom I will share my views and request for information that I could be missing. I would then develop a professional resume and take it to the institutions of interest personally. This will give the institutions an impression that I am interested in working with them.

The first most important questions I would ask the supervisor include the following: what are the most important things am I likely to learn from my practicum in this organization?  To what extent do you supervise your students? Their answers will enable me fulfill the expectations of my supervisor.

I will require 850 hours for the practicum to fulfill the requirements of my institution and get the necessary experience. Since I reside in the state of Arizona, I would efficiently coordinate between the practicum site and my university. The university considers direct hours to include the time spent on interaction with clients and for assessments. On the other hand, indirect hours include the time that would be spent on activities such as meetings, conferences, planning, preparing for work and so on (Office of Field Experience, n.d, Pg. 13). I will require 100 hours for the pre-practicum, 40 of which I will spend as direct hours, while the remaining 60 hours will be allocated to other activities necessary. The remaining 750 hours will be allocated to the practicum with an allocation of 60% to direct practice and 40% for the indirect part. Activities carried out for all the hours will be documented in accordance to the regulations of the University.

For the practicum, I will require the following documents so as to meet the university requirements: a cover sheet, a form for the proof of professional membership, an acknowledgement for the guidelines of the practicum, an information form about the practicum site and the supervisor, a proof of insurance liability, a duplicate of the supervisor’s license, as well as an application form declaring my interest to enter the practicum (Office of Field Experience, n.d, Pg. 9).

By the end of the practicum, I expect to demonstrate professional growth and the ability to apply theories learned in classwork to practice (Grand Canyon University, 2015). In addition, I will accomplish the following goals: identify and assess the needs of the community, plan and engage actively in the achievements of the organization, engage in the context of the organization through activities such as attending meetings and training sessions, review the different approaches adopted by the organization for various professional tasks, articulate reasons for the development of various interventions, express excellent communication skills, and explore multiple areas so as to gain diverse knowledge regarding my profession.
