Molyneux’s problem

William Molyneux was an Irish natural philosopher and writer on politics. He was a contemporary of John Locke’s and after Locke had written The Essay Concerning Human Understanding Molyneux was very impressed and started a correspondence with Locke. In one of his letters, Molyneux presented Locke with the following thought experiment.

“Suppose a man born blind, and now adult, and taught by his touch to distinguish between a cube and a sphere of the same metal, and nighly of the same bigness, so as to tell, when he felt one and the other, which is the cube, which is the sphere. Suppose then the cube and the sphere placed on a table, and the blind man made to see: query, Whether by his sight, before he touched them, he could now distinguish and tell which is the globe, which the cube? To which the acute and judicious proposer answers: ‘Not. For though he has obtained the experience of how a globe, and how a cube, affects his touch; yet he has not yet attained the experience, that what affects his touch so or so, must affect his sight so or so…'”

To summarize Molyneux is asking us to imagine a person who was blind from birth and was taught to distinguish shapes by touch. We then imagine that the shapes are placed before him and his sight is magically restored. Would he be able to distinguish the shapes he had learned by touch, using just his sense of sight?
Apply Locke’s empiricism and his distinction between primary and secondary qualities to a novel problem.
Discuss Locke’s epistemology with your peers.

Instructions

How do you think Locke would answer Molyneux’s question? Explain why Locke would give that answer. What do you personally think the correct answer is and why? (write at least THREE paragraphs).

Master Slave Dialectic Hegel and Fanon

Master Slave Dialectic Hegel and Fanon Compare two thinkers, Hegel and Fanon in an essay.

Master Slave Dialectic Hegel and Fanon

Hegel wrote that “Self-consciousness exists in and for itself when, and by the fact that, it so exists for another; that is, it exists only in being acknowledged” (111). Explain this with reference to the master-slave dialectic in Hegel. How does Fanon use and complicate these ideas? The inversion of the master/slave power dynamic, and the idea of a complicity between Maureen and Bam foreground what Georg Hegel describes as the conditions of the “master/slave dialectic” and the “dialectic” generally. In Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), Hegel codifies the complicated mechanisms whereby disparate, seemingly antithetical or contradictory ideas can be arranged into dialogue or conversation with each other by means of their “dialectic” juxtaposition (Selden 95). The Hegelian dialectic suggests a coherence between concrete and abstract, subject and object, part and whole-and, for our purposes, master and slave.

Who were the critics? Why did these programs survive? Would you say there was a single US interest, whether in maintaining or abolishing them? At the end of your post, indicate one new question that the reading raised for you.  Governments around the world are embracing guestworkers as a flexible labor force. The untold story of 1960s-era strike wave among Caribbean sugarcane cutters in Florida shows how the longest-running US guestworker program – the H2 Program – has functioned.

Night by Elie Wiesel on Dehumanization
Night by Elie Wiesel on Dehumanization

Throughout Night, dehumanization  consistently took place as the tyrant Nazis oppressed the Jewish citizens.  The Nazis targeted the Jews’ humanity, and slowly dissolved their feeling of being human. This loss of humanity led to a weakened will in the Holocaust victims, and essentially led to death in many.  The Nazis had an abundance of practices to dehumanize the Jews including beatings, starvation, theft of possessions, separation of families, crude murders, forced labor, and much more. There is no greater loss than that of humanity, so one can never truly relate to the horrors of dehumanization the Jews faced. In the list below, I will compile various examples that correlate to this theme of dehumanization.
