familiar. Consequently, concerts or performances of Western art music or popular music, or
interviews with performers of these musical genres, will not be accepted for this review. Find
something new – explore the rich cultural and musical diversity of southern California! Some concert

encourage you to find a performance other than those that happen on concert stages – those at community

As you know, a big part of the ethnomusicological approach to studying music is evaluating sounds and
performances within their cultural context (review chapters 1 and 11 of the Titon textbook for more on
this approach). Consequently, if reviewing a performance, your paper should include information on
where it took place, for what reason, who attended, who performed, for how long, how the audience
reacted, and your thoughts on what the performance meant for all of these people involved. To the extent
that you can, you should also provide some historical or background information on the type of music
and/or the musicians. For instance, if you go to see an Argentinian tango performance, explain why that
music and dance are so important to people from that country. If you don’t know much about the history
of the music you choose, spend some time in the library researching its background. The Garland
Encyclopedia of World Music or New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians are good places to start.
You should have at least three bibliographic references to published academic works in the essay;
additional sources may be drawn from online resources.
If possible, even if doing a concert ethnography rather than a formal interview, talk to the performers!
Ask them about the music they play, how they got started if they make their living doing it – whatever
you are curious about. I understand that not everyone will have this chance, depending on the kind of
musical event you attend. If you do have the opportunity, though, it will make the performance that much
more interesting and gives you a clearer idea what to write your paper about.
Though the context is clearly important, the music itself is equally so. Be sure to describe and name any
instruments that were played, or discuss the kind of vocal textures used if the music is sung. What were
the songs about? What genres of music were performed? Was just one musical style used throughout the
performance, or were many mixed together? Was the volume loud or soft, and why? Use your musical
vocabulary – if it was heterophonic, mention that; if drones were involved, tell me about them. Dartmouth

The Role of Music in the Single Moms Club

The Single Moms Club is one of the comedy-drama movies in the American film industry released in 2014. Similar to other films directed by Tyler Perry, his unsubtle nature is evident through the embedded themes and artistic approaches used to enhance the relationship between the characters and the targeted audience. The characters are brought together by an incidence in a preparatory school, which their children attend[1]. As part of the institution’s regulations, the five single parents have to organize a fundraising ceremony. In the process, they realize that they have similar problems perpetrated by their comparable social life. Despite the differences in their social classes, they strive to offer support to each other by initiating a single moms club.  By effectively manipulating the emotions of the viewers, this movie aims at promoting certain desirable values within various social frameworks. The young girl asks her, “Why do you always make people leave us?” [2]The background music not only shows the psychological effect of these assertions on Hillary but it also aids in creating a sad and sympathetic mood and the relevant emotions among the audience.  The sad mood triggered by the peaceful background music changes to a vibrant and lively atmosphere when the five single mothers start benefiting from the emotional support provided by the newly created single moms club.  After May proposes that they take turns to babysit the children while the rest of the group goes out o have fun, the background music shows the relaxed nature of the characters as they try to forget about their predicaments in life.  When Lytia, Hillary, Jan, and Esperanza go to an entertainment club, the embedded music is effective in changing the mood and emotions exhibited by the audience[3].

There are certain distinct characteristics of the music embedded in this film. One such trait entails rhythm. Rhythm focuses on the pace, beat, and the evident pattern of weak or strong beats. In this movie, the director uses these components of rhythm to create the right mood with reference to the embedded themes. In addition, the music integrated in differ scenes of this film exhibits sound fidelity. This refers to the capability of the incorporated sound to be authentic to its source as conceived by the targeted audience. For instance, in this movie, the background music playing when the single mothers go to an entertainment joint concurs with the entire event. These characteristics are defined by certain noteworthy instruments.  Various scenes have music composed by use of different instruments depending on the mood and the emotions it seeks to trigger among the audience. For example, when May reunites with her son and enters in a romantic relationship with TK, one can easily note the piano in the song playing in the background[4]. The softness of the resultant melody creates an atmosphere filled with love and calmness. In contrast, drums and a saxophone are some of the key musical instruments used to compose a melody in the scene at an entertainment joint. This initiates a lively and relaxed atmosphere. Through the created mood, the audience relates with the characters as they acquire a new sense of life away from their problems.

In line with the general role of music in a film, there are various themes enhanced by this artistic tactic. One such theme is societal discrimination. The problems faced by the five women in this movie are somewhat due to the fact that they are not in a stable romantic relationship. Accordingly, the outside society does not understand their predicaments and make it hard for them to cope with their challenges due to the evident alienation. In addition, love is a theme enhanced by the embedded soft melodies. Despite the challenges they have been facing in their social life, it is obvious that the five main characters are hopeful of finding loving partners.

Limelight is a song categorized as rock. It is written by Neil Peart, Rush band’s drummer. In 1the 980s, the band comprising of three musicians made the song public, after which it received massive airplay. Neil had composed the song a few years back, during a time when he found it difficult to deal with the reality of celebrity, as well as his personal struggles. In an interview conducted in 1988, the leader of the trio, Geddy Lee, acknowledged that the song was possibly more of a contribution by Neil, contrary to most of the songs in their album. This implies that his feelings concerning being in the limelight, his hardship dealing with the celebrity life, having to sign many autographs from autograph seekers, in addition to having to forego their privacy and numerous demands on time, pushed Neil to express his feelings by writing the song.

The song Limelight comprises of an odd meter (Wall, 2009). The song alters often, changing from seven beats at a measure to the normal four. Possibly because the tempo is slow enough making it possible for the listener to nod to all beats; it becomes improbable to feel the metric changes. Limelight alters meters in a manner that appears natural as the shifts fit the lyrics (Wall, 2009). Rush smoothly ensures that the song rolls to subsequent phrases, which results in a slow bridge, common in triple meter, and a unique aesthetic feeling. Even as the solo guitar winds up, the song logically develops from the triple meter supporting the solo back to the initial seven. For some moment, the guitar and rhythm section appear backward, however they progress to move along snapping in place in the final chorus.

The song employs a personal variation scale. This is because the scales are modified through alterations in notes all through the song. There is no apparent manner of changing the scale because the music is merely intended at sounding well. The scales become apparent through the guitar solo, which employs a single scale at some instance. The third stanza differs from the others as it has only three lines, which slows down the guitar solo, prior to moving to the next stanza. Introduction

This project will be carried out to examine how Ravi Shankar influenced the world by his activities. The project engages to identify the origin of Hindustani music. The project also aims to discover the similarities between raga and jazz as used in Hindustani music. This is by reviewing the play ‘My favorite things’ by Coltrane. Following an introductory exploration of both Coltrane’s musical career prior to 1960 and the “standard” form of “My Favorite Things,” the paper will compare and contrast Coltrane’s recordings of the piece: his 1960 studio recording, a more extended performance at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival, and the last recording of the piece by his “classic quartet” in1965. These comparisons will reveal the evolution of both Coltrane’s own playing and the dynamics of his group’s interplay. They will also reflect the influence of African, Indian, and Western art music upon Coltrane and the modal and free styles of jazz in the 1960s.

The interviews to get information were conducted in music theatres in India and the Western countries. A group of music analysts interviewed the music teachers in India and the United States. The group also did literature research to garner information about Ravi Shankar and his contributions to the classical and modern music.

Introduction to Hindustani

Ravi Shankar, a self-proclaimed figure, happened to have lived between 1920-2012 in the current day India. In the word of music, Shankar was widely recognized as a performer, musician, composer, and a well-known scholar of classical Indian music. He is still remembered for being one of the leading cultural figures of the 21stC whose achievements placed him as the leading icon of a significant music tradition. One of his profound visions was to ensure a stress free and violence free world (Michael 2007).

Ravi Shamir Biography

Shankar was born in Varanasi, India on April 7, 1920. He later moved to Paris in 1930 where most of his education was undertaken. From as early as 12 years old, he had started performing as a talented music dancer and as musician on a tour together with his elder brother Uday Shankar. In 1939, he held an ambivalent concert at music conference at Allahabad where he took the role of a soloist. His reputation as a remarkable leading performer of traditional Hindustani music had spread like bushfire by 1945. Shankar started to branch out as a composer where he started writing music for ballet and for significant films such as Neecha Nagar and Dharti ke Lal (Bhatt & Kashmiri Education, Culture, and Science Society 2008).

Shankar is also remembered to have composed the song Sare Jahan Se Accha, which is widely applicable today as second to the national Anthem of India. His reputation rewarded him the Music Director of All-India Radio at Delphi in 1949, and developed the Vadya Vrinda chamber Orchestra. The period 1950-1955 was very intense to him, particularly, involvement in internationally-acclaimed film studios of Calcutta where he was bumped up with a Ray Triology. He received glamorously the first of five presidential Awards, India’s most honorable title, in 1962. Throughout the year between 1960-65, Shankar had become one of the world’s leading serious musicians. George Harrison of the Beatles composed a deep, engulfed interest in the Hindustani music, and started to study with Shamir. One of the impacts of this study can be listened in his song ‘Within you, Without You’ (Rachael & Jeffrey 2006).

This impact revolves about enrichment of vocabulary of a student. The composition and improvisation by creative artistes leads to continual change of tastes and preferences (Michael 2007). The impact can also involve a western performer of Indian music both in and outside India. In this case, the performer is able to appreciate both cultures. The effects of Ravi’s introduction to Hindustani music has been beneficial to people in that many are able to describe themselves through songs. Music competitions are held all over the world and it comprises the whole generation in the determination of the winner (Aaron 2010). By 1960, the use of hallucinogenic drugs was rampant. It made singers and artistes freely display their habit in their performance. This is not the case today because there are strict measures to deal with the vice. The heavy use of hallucinogenic drugs by 1960 lead to secession of races (Michael 2007).

The western music at that time considered itself superior than any other in the world. But, the western world today views the heavy use of hallucinogenic drugs as one of the connecting factor between musicians of all genres. During 1960’s drugs, psycledia played in a crucial part in openness in amplifying an individual’s abilities. This was purely western phenomenon, a distinguished product of rock culture as in reality. Contrarily, Indian music and drugs are polar opposites (Rachael & Jeffrey 2006). Hippy connotations were mainly used by Western world’s musicians to rejuvenate their styles and performances (Bhatt & Kashmiri Education, Culture, and Science Society 2008).

John McLaughlin and other musicians such as Mr. Peppers diffused the works of Ravi Shankar to attest that Indiana music had a connection with spirituality. Being a disciple of Bengali guru Sri Chinmoy, he wore a shirt of him during Mahavishnu period (Aaron 2010). Due to this spiritual connectedness, a growing number of musicians from whom Indian music is part of their flesh are arising. Shakti being a die-hard spiritualist employed his principles to incorporate those of Ravi to send message globally. In his association with George Harrison of the Beatles, Ravi was able to popularize Indian music to the western world. Most of the highly expressive melodies done by Shanker alongside his longtime table player Alla Rakha, was The Doors, Jimi Henrix and he Grateful Dead (Rachael & Jeffrey 2006).

Coltrane in his play ‘my favorite things’ offers a brief outline of the similarities between Raga and Jazz. Both of them employ modal music that is played every day throughout the world/. Coltrane attributed raga and jazz with respect to all religions in all kind of mysticism. Jazz and raga employs similar short compositions, mostly a melody with should variations that also serve as avenues for improvisation. Improvisation of jazz is always expected. Both genres are much similar in the moment art, in that it requires immediate music making, and both require period of amicable discipline and the research before one can play them well (Aaron 2010).

Both jazz and Indian music, just like languages, have grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, and contrary to their differences, they share many sonic components in the sphere of human musical expression. Both genres uses harmony and tonal content in their formats, but jazz in western music is grounded on progressive harmony (Bhatt & Kashmiri Education, Culture, and Science Society 2008). Indian music uses elongated compositions (Kritis) that are a major part of the repertoire, and jazz also has the same repertoire of elongated compositions that are played verbatim. This alone gives a tremendous quantity of common base and conceptual strength between Indian music and jazz.
