The Shack tells a story on two levels, one as a terrible tragedy and one as a parable or allegory. There will come a point several chapters into the book where you will have to make the decision to suspend disbelief to enter fully enter the storyline. Please do so; the journey will be worth it.

Please keep in mind that this novel was written as a parable or allegory (or a kind of metaphor), and the beginning of the story is written as realistic fiction, which takes place in today’s time. It is NOT scripture although it certainly introduces Biblical topics and concepts for further contemplation. It also features an interesting, “fantastical” plot that allows for analysis of literary elements you are studying. One of the purposes of literature is to give you insights or opportunities for thoughtful extended consideration from other points of view.

(Note: You will have three (3) response assignments for the The Shack, and they are spaced throughout the eight units of the course. Each will follow the same format, but will address different sections of the novel.)

A few weeks back we read AndrÈ Breton’s “First Surrealist Manifesto” (1924). In it Breton lays down the blueprints for the movement, establishing some “rules” and combining elements of abstraction and poetry. More than any document, this one clarifies the spirit, style, and tone of surrealism.

Unlike Buuel’s films, for instance, a movie such as The Big Lebowski likely does not intentionally illustrate ideas from Breton’s manifesto. But that doesn’t mean this manifesto (or Surrealism, for that matter) is dead and long forgotten; or that we can’t make connections between these two texts, using either to help us think about the other.

In this short piece, pick one kernel or concept or “rule” from the manifesto, and discuss how it applies to The Big Lebowski. How does the movie, in other words, animate something from this classic document that helps you to understand Surrealism?

No need to write up a traditional introduction and conclusion. I suggest diving right in by introducing and clarifying the idea from the manifesto you want to focus on (quoting a passage is fine). Then discuss how you feel the movie applies or makes use of this concept or rule, and how either or both texts (manifesto and movie) are illuminated in the process.

Explain this time period (1949 and 1955) why it was punishable by death and seen as the “ultimate sin” for a black man to be accused of violating a white woman even if the evidence proved otherwise, that a crime had not been committed.

Norma Padgett still holds fast to her story that she was raped in 1949 by the Groveland Four and Carolyn Bryant, Emmett Till’s accuser later recanted her story denying any prior claims that she was disrespected by Till. This essay is based solely on the short story, Eveline. You will not have to cite Eveline as a source unless you quote directly from it (if you do, cite the source inside the essay and also provide a Work Cited page with an entry for Joyce’s Eveline). But in the introduction, go ahead and mention the author and title somewhere, to introduce what your paper is going to be about.
The theme of your essay will be about choices and consequences. In Eveline, the main character has an enormous choice to make leave with her fiance, Frank, or stay at home with her father and her job. Each of those choices has life-changing consequences.
Here are the body paragraphs you should have (of course, you’ll also include an intro and conclusion, too).

Body 1 of your essay should examine and explore Eveline’s desire to stay at home. Be detailed about your observations, talking about the story VERY specifically. If you’re too vague in this paragraph, I’ll wonder if you read the story carefully or just skimmed it.
Body 2 of your essay should examine and explore Eveline’s desire to go with Frank (and leave her home). Again, be detailed about your observations, with specific details.
