Geography literature review

A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area. The purpose of
it is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others. This written document will provide the background for your study, and help direct you in your analysis. A minimum of 10 sources are required (above and beyond sources that are associated with work in this class), and please note that annotated bibliographies are not suitable. For those inexperienced with writing literature reviews, please use the following website as a guide:
http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/literature-reviews/
Also to be included in the literature review is a section on your source(s) of data. In this section
of the report you are to describe the data that you intend to use for the project. This can be
modeled after the data descriptions provided with the data sets for the assignments. In other words, it is not sufficient to list the dataset; you must describe the variables that are included in the data set. Include a discussion on the precision, accuracy, reliability and validity of the variables (these concepts were addressed in 3MB3). In total, your submission should be approximately 5 written pages (not including references), using all of the style guidelines that
are applied in all submissions in this course.

Such characters include his wife, Lady Macbeth, as well as the other Kings of Scotland in the play, Duncan and Malcolm. His fellow thanes Banquo and Macduff also act as counterpoints to Macbeth.

Choose at least three of these characters and discuss how they compare and contrast with Macbeth, and what their characterization suggests about how Macbeth’s rule in Scotland could be different. Your essay should be in MLA format, including a Works Cited page. You should use at least one other source besides Macbeth (and at least three sources would be best). Two Kinds by Amy Tan Elements of the Literature
Two Kinds by Amy Tan Elements of the Literature

What we will not do in this essay, and future critiques has related the literature to our experiences as readers anymore. Now we delve into the literature to consider the characters, setting, exposition, and other elements individually or combined.

Your thesis statement should be narrowly focused and unique, so your analysis relates to concepts learned in Part I and Part II of the textbook. Keep in mind that you may develop a minor idea from within this essay or your next essay for your Unit Four research project, so choose your topic carefully.

Read and Review:

Pages 30-52 provide a refresher on essay drafting if needed.

Pages 1571-1573 offer more details and example paragraphs about the New Critical/Formalist essay critiquing format.

Each chapter on fiction in Part II provides a sample essay that you can review and/or model when drafting this essay. Choose your literary elements from within the chapters of Part II. You won’t want to choose a literary element from the chapter titles because that might make your essay topic too broad.

Literature Choices:

Choose ONE story from Chapter 1 (Fiction: An Overview) or from Chapter 10 (Collection of Stories for Additional Enjoyment and Study)

Topic Prompts: Choose One

Literary Element and Theme: Choose one literary element within the short story to analyze how the author used it to develop one specific theme within the work. Provide in-depth information about your chosen literary element.

Combining Elements for Image or Symbol: Choose two literary elements within the short story to analyze how effectively the author used them together to create an extended image OR establish a significant symbol.

Two Kinds by Amy Tan Elements of the Literature Requirements

Focus/Purpose: to analyze and to support an opinion to a primary audience of classmates and instructor

Content and Support/Elaboration: Your 5+ paragraph essay should be 525-625 words. Each paragraph should include concrete details from the literature as support for the topic sentence, either as an example or an explanation of your point.

Idea Organization: Create complete paragraphs (topic, supporting details, transitions) organized as needed to support your new critical/formalist ideas.

Style: This is not a reader-response essay, so third person writing is required. College-level academic formality is expected as well.

Format/Essay Conventions: You may organize this new critical/formalist content in an example, causal analysis, or an argument essay structure.

MLA: This essay must conform to 8th edition MLA standards. This includes the heading, the page formatting, and your credits of the literature in the in-text citations and the full citation after the essay. No additional research is permitted for this essay.

Once you’re satisfied with the final draft, submit your essay to the Turnitin drop box within iCollege by the due date provided.

The essay will be graded according to the Essay Descriptions and using the Rubrics posted in our iCollege course.

Children Literature Critical Essay Prompt

Children Literature Critical Essay Prompt Your first essay assignment asks you to extend the conversations we have had in class to develop an applied textual argument of your own.

Children Literature Critical Essay Prompt
Children Literature Critical Essay Prompt

You are encouraged to build upon the things we discuss in class, but remember that turning in a paper which merely repeats the readings we do together will not be enough to get an “A;” you need to offer something of your own, and argue it well, to merit that grade.

Prompt

Using any two of our course texts, produce an essay that explains how children’s literature theorizes the child.

To do this, you will need to select two texts from those we have read, and create an argument which shows how each text theorizes, addresses and educates the child. Through close reading and analysis, your goal should be to articulate how each text projects the child to which they are addressed, in order to illustrate any overlaps or distinctions in how these texts develop the ideological concept of the child. Your paper should then include the following:

  1. An overarching CLAIM that articulates and argues the distinct versions of childhood that are presented by each of your texts
  2. Close reading and analysis that explains WHAT characteristics you are focusing on, HOW they are constructed, and WHY this is important for understanding each narrative as a whole
  3. A conclusion which discusses the importance of what you have analyzed in understanding each story, then broadening these implications to the larger functions and development of children’s literature, thinking especially about what it means that so many versions of what is appropriate for “children” exist

Please treat this as a formal essay, and review the handouts on “Close Reading,” “Claims,” and “Evidence and Analysis” on the Blackboard site before you write.

Example of a claim for this paper:

Aesop’s fable, “The Fox and the Crow,” asks children to reason by presenting multiple opportunities for identification in the characters of the fable.

Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, however, understands the child as being problematically shaped by the education of her moment; in his portrayal of Alice, Carroll suggests that the impressionability of children has subjected them to an educational system that is failing to produce knowledgeable adults. Both texts assume that children are impressionable and require training to become functioning adults; however, where Aesop seems to address a child that is like a blank slate, Carroll acknowledges that there are many possible influences on children’s thinking, including negative ones. He offers up Alice as a corrective to these unproductive influences.
