Why a pop song is ephemeral

On pp. 46 and 47 in The Poetry of Pop, Adam Bradley describes how most pop songs are “ephemeral,” in the sense that their creators seek to make an immediate impact on the listener, within what is usually a limited time frame. On the other hand, pop musicians can also be obstructive, like poets, in the sense that they want to encourage repeated listening. They want to keep listeners coming back by encouraging them to wonder what may be happening under the surface of a catchy or pretty song. Choose a song that you think demonstrates this principle. What about this song makes it ephemeral? What makes it obstructive? How do these traits blend to create an artwork with a deeper poetic meaning?

-Your response to this prompt should be three to five complete pages. In your response, you should pay close attention to the formal, patterned qualities of the lyric and song. What about the sound or language in this song is compressed in order to enhance its vivid, sensual qualities? You may discuss patterns such as rhyme, rhythm, vocal quality, pitch, tempo, timbre, or instrumentation (to name a few of the patterns we’ve discussed in class). If you believe that the song you chose doesn’t have a very deep meaning, it is probably not worth analyzing. Beware of this as you choose the topic for your paper.
-You may also choose to write on another topic with approval from the instructor. Your topic must be approved by the end of my office hours on 2/14.

You will receive additional prompts for discussion from your TA after the discussion deadline. Up to 2 points of extra credit is available for discussion participation that continues.

Antoine ìFatsî Domino and Chuck Berry were two of the most influential popular musicians who helped to forge rock ëní roll in the early 1950s out of R&B, blues, jazz, and country music: rock ëní roll was the newest hybrid music of the time. The cross-pollination of sounds was the recipe for success in opening up new markets for black communities and white teenagers across the nation. Scandalous stage antics by some performers (notably Muddy Waters) also proved irresistible to the youth of the 1950s. These early musicians helped to create rock ëní roll by mixing styles in subtle yet infectious ways.

Hits were disseminated over the radio and TV as the media went through a revolution in technology and its role in the distribution of culture. Major record companies dropped the ball as smaller record companies such as Chess Records featuring Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Etta James, etc capitalized on newer markets. For example, the smart and frugal business sense of the Chess brothers, with their keen ability to detect a hit, led to the company’s success.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Choose two songs one by Fats Domino and one by Chuck Berry from any of the Unit 3 playlists (check Boogie-Woogie and the Jump Blues, and Walking the Line: Country Music and Rockabilly for songs). Address one of the following for both:

(1) Composition: Make a formal analysis of the song you chose using letters (ABA, AABA, AAB, etc). Make sure to tell us what makes the B section distinct from the A section: a new melody? a new rhythm? etc.

(2) Interpretation: What kinds of emotions does the melody, and its interpretation in this recording, convey? Discuss how specific connections between lyrics and the shape of the melody lead to this expression. Site-specific examples (i.e. “the words ‘while we’re apart’ in the return to A” or “timecode 1:33”.

In comparing the songs, consider what is simple or predictable about the song, and what is not. Support your work in this response with claims made in at least two of the Unit 3 readings, choosing at least one required reading and one elective reading. For example, consider, in Richard Peterson’s “Why 1955?” (the role of younger audiences, the role of smaller independent labels, and the shift toward the ìTop 40î format in radio), or perspectives on Berry’s rise to fame in Taylor’s “His Name Was In Lights”…and (choose at least one:) Nadine Cohodas’ perspectives in the optional readings “Blues with a Feeling” or ì2120 South Michiganî. You might also try to imagine how a teenager growing up in the 1950s might hear one of the songs you chose. Tell us why you think an adolescent of the 1950s may have heard the song in a particular way. Is it the melody, the lyrical content, the overall mood, or something more complex like the postwar Zeitgeist?)

Note your impressions about what you heard and saw and relate it to work we have done in class if possible.

In your written response, first give the date, location, and time of the event, and the performer or group you saw. Then consider the following:

*General responses to the performance and to the work itself. What type of concert was it and what was the general style of the music? What were the cultural implications related to our work in class? You liked it or didn’t like it. Why? Include strong and weak points in the music and in the way it was performed.

*Responses to the performances in the concert. What was good or bad and what made it so? Be specific. If it was a group concert, how did the performers work as an ensemble?

*What kinds of themes, messages or ideas came across to you in the concert? What did the experience cause you to think about or feel?

*Comment on the visual impact of the concert: setting, lights, concert dress, movement. How did these add to or detract from the mood and power of the music? What did you notice about audience behavior?

Grading

A 50 point paper will include responses to the points above and will be written in correct English with correct spelling. It will be about one page in length. Proof of attendance will be included, and the date, place and time of the concert will be specified. The concert will have occurred during this semester, not earlier.

 

The event will be rolling loud LA 2018 that was just this weekend 12/14-12/15. There are set time posted on their website. The concert was a crazy, really good mood, some people dressed really well but others didn’t.
